Depends on the director. Some are going to exert more control over positions and timing than others. Some are just going to outline what they want and go with the flow. There may even be some that turn on the camera and see what happens. It would be interesting if the directors that contribute here shared their personal philosophies about what they try to do in constructing a scene.
