Anal was always a selling point, but it didn't come to dominate porn until the mid-to-late 80s. A lot of stars never did anal before then, these days it's almost impossible to be a 'star' without doing it. Although that has changed in the past few years thankfully, as I don't think any performer should do something they don't want to.
Vanessa Del Rio, Connie Peterson, Eileen Wells, Crystal Dawn, Serena and Sheri St. Clair were doing anal and DP scenes throughout the late 70s and early 80s.

Bruce Seven & The Dark Bros. need to be credited as pioneers in the creation of anal themed series. Seven launched the "Loose Ends" series, and Ginger Lynn was the 1st real "star" to make a DP fashionable for her contemporaries in New Wave Hookers. I agree with Rosco. The Loose Ends series was so much better than Caught From Behind it was amazing. A few years later, if my chronology is correct, came Buttman. And from there on, it's popularity has exploded.
^Caught from behind was possibly the first series to promote anal. I'd like to add these others: Backdoor to Hollywood, Hershey Highway and Anal Intruder. Each of thes series had a wide variety of stars and in some way each of them helkp pave the way for todays anal stars.

The first Loose Ends film I saw was definitely better than Caught from Behind, imo, but I don't think that series had the same profile. The Dark Brothers were obviously influential as well, but they weren't putting anal right up there in the title like both of these series.

The Fanny Films series began in 1973, were all anal, including some John Holmes scenes. They were a peep booth staple when 8mm projectors were considered high tech. Available at Blue Vanities.

I agree, the Loose Ends series was definitely better than the CFB series. CFB was okay, but it didn't set a standard for anal play like Loose Ends II did. CFB had girls that did anal, but they weren't true anal queens, (exluding CFB 5 Blacks and Blondes) like Penny Morgan, Bionca, Erica Boyer whom all graced Loose Ends.
I think Alex De Renzy (as Rex Borsky) deserves to be mentioned here. He was one of the first all anal porn directors, all the anal flicks he did for rosebud made him pretty big pioneer in my opinion. I don't know if she "popularized" it, but I would say that when Georgina Spelvin did her DP on The Devil In Miss Jones, it was probably the most recognized "first" anal. Later on, there was Viper who did a lot of anal. XO Mindee

My theory is that anal sex was popularized in porn by porn consumers who bought all the good anal content they could find when there wasn't a whole lot of it to be found. Like any business, the porn business apparently (sooner or later) notices when something is selling especially well. Porn didn't make people take an interest in anal sex. Though I suppose there are some people who just jump onboard whatever the current "trend" seems to be. I don't think anal sex is a trend, considering the fact that people have always done it. Debi Diamond from the mid 80's to mid 90's is certainly a name that would have to be mentioned that help popularize anal in the adult film business. These posts don't pertain to "popularizing" anal. Seka and Veronica Hart did anal, too but it wasn't popular. At the turn of 2000 Lexington Steele was putting a lot of anal in his movies ("Balls Deep" and other series) and Jules Jordan ("New Breed" series) and occasionally Jack Napier were too during their first productions. My first wise ass, no pun intended (well ok, that may not be entirely true), answer was the Greeks. Pornography of kinds, as anyone knows, who hangs out at The History Channel, was frequently used to decorate public buildings in ancient Greece and Rome. However, I find it interesting that a sex act, deemed popular on this forum, is not nearly so popular in hetro-sexual circles, certainly in terms of its actual practice.
In actual practice I am strictly into vaginal intercourse, and haven't engaged in anal intercourse in over twenty years. The novelty of anal wore off after a few times, and frankly it didn't even feel as good as vaginal intercourse. Add in the tick of disease, including an incurable fatal disease, HIV, and it just didn't worth it anymore. Still like to watch anal porn, though, probably for no better reason than because it is there.
Private's early Triple X Series and Private Stories not only reliably had anal but they also featured Dp's long before it became common in US porn. You weren't looking very hard when you were going through the VCA catalog. Hell back in the mid to late 1990s Stacy Valentine, Juli Ashton, Sunset Thomas, Nikita, Vicca, and Julie Meadows were all under contract with them. It was hard to find a VCA movie in that time period that didn't have anal until Marc Wallace ruined it for everyone.
I think to measure popularity you have to look at the moment in time when it seemed to flood the market. This appeared (to me anyway) to occur right when I started watching porn, so I admit there is an inherent bias there. On the gonzo side I'd really have to point to Belladonna, Gauge, Aurora Snow, and Jewel De'Nyle. From a feature perspective Chloe and Nikita Denise come to mind. As far as directors go, definitely Buttman but I think he paved the way for Seymore Butts, Rocco and Jules Jordan who truly 'popularized' it. Additionally, the word 'popularize' carries with it the connotation of acceptance, meaning it's no longer a taboo. Again, I would have to point to the above mentioned names who made it part of the porn culture.

Actually no. If you're really looking for who set the trend for modern teen anal, it would have been Katie Gold and Shay Sweet back in the late 90's. It really exploded into popularity (the teen anal genre) with these two. All the Jim Powers, Mark Wood and Michael Stefano movies that followed in the early 2000's built on that trend.
