Big sites like JulesJordanVideo.com and EvilAngel.com, though rife with HD content, still seem to favor the DVD format more than - or at least as much as - digital content. A disc upon release is around $30. You can subscribe to site for less than that and have access to 1,000's of HD scenes instead of 5 standard-definition scenes on any one disc. Why would anyone buy a disc over a site membership? The excuse of, "some guys prefer to rent discs because it's easier to hide their porn habit" is not that valid. Signing up to a site and streaming is much less trouble and less revealing than renting either via mail or in person. It seems like such a dead end. Vince Vouyer, for example, stuck with DVD's till the bitter end. He tried his hand at web success with VinceVouyer.com (now defunct), but it was too little too late. The scenes were never in true HD and now both that and his DVD releases are a thing of the past. Why even bother with DVD or Blu-ray when it comes to porn?
Because some people prefer to purchase physical media. Barring manufacturing error, the lifespan of a DVD is 100 to 200 years. Will your computer's hard drive manage a tenth of that? As for the demise of Vince Voyeur's company, how do you know it was due to a lack of HD releases on the web, versus something else? Maybe he couldn't overcome the rampant piracy.
I really don't understand why companies are pushing for DVD anymore, especially since it's such an old technology and all of the big companies, including Evil Angel & Jules Jordan are shooting on HD and in the case of Jules Jordan & Naughty America moving towards 4K UltraHD. Blu-Ray it seems was supported for a while from it's introduction in 2007 but then for the most part abandoned by the big studios, which is a shame because I like Blu-Rays best, it has superior picture quality at 1080p resolution and it's still physical media that can be displayed. When a movie is available on Blu-Ray I always ensure I purchase the Blu-Ray version. My guess is that DVDs are still very cheap to manufacture compared to Blu-Ray and there's a larger market for them, older consumers, who aren't as technologically proficient or who don't want to sign up for a website subscription can simply buy the DVD pay once and be done with it. As for myself I like the physical media better, but would absolutely consider a subscription to Brazzers or Naughty America some of the other big studio sites in the future.

Why do some people deny the very excistence of quality?
Yeah, what hardware said. Also, picture this: a person signs up for a porn site (let's call them Reality Kings, Blacked, and Tushy), and each time they subscribe, the CC biller fraudulently charges them multiple times. Every time it happens, the person must replace the CC, go through lengthy interactions with the CC biller and the company and blah blah blah blah blah. I am very happy these companies put their product out on DVD. So far, no DVD merchant has charged me six times for one DVD.
If you want an interesting question, how about why do some companies still insist on waiting until a DVD releases to release the scenes on their websites? I'd argue that at this point, the audience that joins porn sites and the audiences that buy porn DVDs don't really have much overlap. Most DVD companies have figured that out and release their scenes on the web first, but there's still a few that insist on waiting until street date to upload their newest movies.
Let's see: Not everybody in Europe or the US has decent internet speeds, not to mention datacaps. At least in Europe most people do not have a creditcard (and a large percentage of those who have one refuse to use them online) and paying for paysites any other way is a pain in the ass (and of course what GGG said). Physical media you own, streaming goes away when you stop paying, downloads have their disadvantages too. Etc. Why is there not much Bluray in adult? Simple, the extra costs are usually not worth it.
What kind of pointless scare story is that? None of the major porn sites work with disreputable payment processors. As for the idea that DVDs are going to stay intact for 100+ years (manufacturer claims one and all, AFAIK) - yeah, good luck with that. At least us guys using HDDs for storage aren't lulled in by a false sense of storage security.
I own a Western Digital Media Player and have never had any real problem with it. It supports pretty much every file type, except for older wmv files. Not too many of those in my collection so it doesn't really affect me much. And it has two USB ports, so I can plug both my external drives in at the same time. I highly recommend it.
^ I think she's referring to the fact that those sites are supposed to be able to stream through Roku, not play downloaded content. If you just wanted to play downloaded stuff, there's a lot of TVs out there that do that natively, it's just a matter of hooking something up through USB.
GGG has mentioned in the past a few hassles with her CC being double charged and getting piss poor customer service when trying to straighten it out. These payment processors may not be malicious in their intent but they can be highly incompetent. Just because you may not have had any problems doesn't mean that nobody has.
There's a difference between knowing the odds and having a false sense of security. What I quoted was the spec for the DVD, that spec being written and agreed to by a consortium of manufacturers, if memory serves. Unless you can point us to some reputable source offering proof that it is impossible to manufacture a DVD to that specification, I see no reason to doubt that, if manufactured correctly and handled appropriately, your DVD will probably outlast you.
What can I say...I've been paying for porn site subscriptions since 2005 or so, and by now I must have had more than 50 separate subscriptions (most just for a month or two), to at least 15 different companies, through at least 6 different payment processors. In all that time I've only had two negative experiences, neither of them because of the payment processor: One was BangBros's dodgy additional package signup that I mentioned here, the other when I accidentally (through my own fault) signed up for two separate Brazzers subscriptions at once in the early years. My only actual issue with payment processors has been valid credit cards getting rejected for obscure reasons on rare occasions. If she's been falsely billed by different companies on multiple occasions (and in what sounds like very few attempts overall), perhaps the common denominator in those incidents isn't "porn subscription sites", but rather "Gore Gore Girl" or "Gore Gore Girl's bank". If something like that was happening to me, I'd not be inclined to just brush it off as "DVD sellers good, subscription sites bad", because it's quite likely that the problem goes deeper than that and could well crop up with other online purchases in the future, too. My point is that the track record of companies in all lines of business is rather spotty when it comes to their claims of product durability, and I see no reason to assume that the makers of optical media are a positive outlier in that. And I'm no guy who just randomly hates on corporations, but I do deal a lot with statistical data and tend to be skeptical about claims that basically amount to "don't you worry, nothing to see here". And even moreso when it comes to porn DVDs in particular; I'm amazed that people would actually make the blanket assumption that they were pressed to high quality standards, and that none of the studios were cutting any corners that would impact the projected lifetime of the discs, even beyond outright overestimating it. There's also the issue that HDD failure is often apparent no matter which of the data on the drive you were actually trying to access, while optical discs could have rotted away by the dozen on a shelf somewhere and it just hasn't been noticed yet because nobody has tried to play them again. DVDs, the Schrödinger's Cat of storage media. Do you regularly check all your purchased DVDs for integrity?
It's personal experience in there, fully covered in more than one topic including that of Blacked. some others (very major) are infamous for their shady procedures while signing up
Everyone else covered it for me, but yes it happened to me. That's wonderful it has never happened to you shalalin. I'm not sure why you're so upset/angry to hear it. Perhaps you thought I was making up a story. It happened though. So I buy physical media or stream through sites like hotmovies. Edited by - Gore Gore Girl on 4/30/2016 7:51:44 AM
Why bother with books when it comes to reading? why bother with cds when it comes to music (viva the return of vinyl!)? Like the man says, many people prefer the physical world.
Sure. Maybe I'm a bumbling fool batting at random keys like a sea lion, resulting in multiple charges all listed as subscription fees that the processor acknowledges were charged in error on their part. Yes, maybe two different major credit cards are the problem (it was not my bank). Regardless, a couple of things: 1. I did not blame the subscription site. Blacked/Tushy were very sweet and kind when I contacted them. The crummy reaction came from the processor, and it's them that did the multiple charges. I don't think I suggested otherwise. 2. That's not the only reason I buy physical media, and I have not "brushed it off as 'DVD sellers good, subscription sites bad.'" That's silly. I know it's not that common--I'm happy it's not and look on i envy as folks chatter away in the Blacked/Tushy threads. I wrote my post with a cavalier, jokey tone because I thought people would understand the reference. You didn't. It's nothing to get so worked up about. Sometimes, processors fuck you over. I'm sick of replacing my CC. Maybe one day I will get one of those short term/one use CC specifically for this purpose. In the meantime, I buy those studios' content on DVD or through streaming sites such as hotmovies. That's really all there is to it.

That was my attitude up until about two years ago. Now, however, I prefer to stream and watch scenes instantly on my iPad. Quite frankly, if it wasn't for (discounted) online porn memberships, I'd be watching very little porn today; dropping $20+ on a new DVD is something I can no longer afford to do.
I'm the opposite; I used to subscribe but have also been burned by two sites that I tried to un-subscribe from and who continued to take monthly pyments from my CC. It took a lot of time and several wasted months to put that right. I only buy dvds now. But I'm picky over what scenes I want to watch and no single site caters for me - I have to look around various studios to see what they're putting out from week to week; it is cheaper for me to buy the odd dvd than subscribe to multiple sites only to enjoy one scene in ten.
I subscribe to a few sites and still buy DVDs. Here's why: I only subscribe to sites that offer streaming through my ROKU because I prefer watching content on my tv. I just don't like watching anything more that a few minutes on my computer. I also don't have a desire to sign up to that many sites. BANG BROS for example puts out stuff I like but not enough for me to sign up so I just buy DVDs from them every now and then. I'd rather do that than subscribe and un subscribe to get/see a few hours of content. I subscribe to FYRETV and they offer subscriptions to a number of major studios under their umbrella and you have the ability to buy scenes or movies to own at a reasonable price. My AEBN subscription allows me to buy/rent a huge selection of new/old content I couldn't find anywhere else but they don't offer content from all studios. BRAZZERS and DOGFART content isn't available through ay of the sites I stream from and they don't offer streaming through the ROKU so I buy DVDs every now and then from them. But If they did I would subscribe. Lastly, I watch just as much old content as new and ADULTDVDMARKETPLACE has great deals on older DVDs and it's just cheaper and easier to buy those older DVDs...plus most of their new releases are pretty cheap.
^ It freezes or loads slowly, and the user interface is easily the worst I have encountered. I think they may have updated it (I bought mine a couple of years ago), so I can't speak to the new design. Still, inability to purchase films through the Roku is baffling to me.

Frankly, I'm amazed that so many porn consumers still choose to buy/rent DVDs and that the business of producing/selling porn DVDs is still profitable; I mean, how long have we been talking about the (imminent) demise of DVDs? It's 2016 and yet it doesn't appear that the "end of days" for the porn-on-DVD business is near.
^ I think at this point it's the fact that DVDs have gotten so cheap to produce that you don't need to sell that large of a print run to be profitable. Especially if you already have a website that you're putting them up on and getting money back that way. I would think, at that point, it's like you've already shot the content and put it out there, why not distribute it in this extra way and maybe pick up a few more sales.
I hate to harp on about this (it's about the third or fourth time I've said it in various threads), but everytime technology changes the entertainment industry, people think that the 'old' type will die out. They said it about books when kindles appeared; they said it about cds when downloads were introduced; they said it of mainstream movies when netflix et al started up. Porn is no different, the market proves it. DVDs will continue to sell as long as there are enough people who like to keep touch with the tangible side of life.

The money made by DVD and blu ray sales in mainstream film are still substanial even though the only people I know who still buy discs are serious film fans. In the case of porn, sales have suffered more but it still seems profitable for the biggest companies. Edited by - BlackSix on 5/4/2016 4:25:46 AM
I would not be surprised at all if the profit margins on dvds are much greater than monthly website subscriptions. I'm really not sure how a company like Evil Angel can make money off of me paying $10 a month for full access to 20 or so titles they release in a month. It would cost over $600 to buy that content on dvd. ($29.99 for single disc titles, and $35.99 for 2 disc titles). So I can see why studios still give priority to dvds when it comes to release dates. Those customers are paying a premium price for their content.
^ Because it's not just you, it's a few thousand of you. Let us not forget that for the most part, the cost of having thousands of members on your site doesn't scale up as fast as the cost of printing a few thousands DVDs (that you may or may not sell). You get enough people to be members of your website, and they effectively pay the day-to-day costs of shooting scenes, and any added DVD sales you get from those scenes would just be a bonus.

^ ^ That's what I wonder about the big studios (Blacked/Tushy, HardX, Evil Angel, Jules Jordan Video, etc.): Are most of their earnings generated from site memberships or from DVD sales/rentals? Also, which one gives you the greater profit margins?

I quit purchasing dvds because downloading or streaming scenes or titles from Hot Movies is better for me. I've yet to download a scene or stream a scene from Hot Movies that freezes up when I play it. I've been disappointed too often with defective dvds to ever consider purchasing one again. I've tried to join web sites that offer content only to have my credit card denied. My credit union puts a "Falcon Alert" on my credit card because of the U.S. Justice Department's "Operation Choke Hold" program. I use a pre-paid debit card to purchase content. I can't purchase re-occurring subscriptions with a pre-paid debit (gift) card. So, once a month, I purchase a $50.00 gift card, register my zip code on the pre-paid debit card's web site then purchase downloaded or streaming content from Hot Movies until the $50.00 is depleted. I've compiled quite a lengthy "wish list" of classic titles and favorite performer's scenes to purchase eventually. About forty six year's worth of porn content to catch up on. Most of it's right there at Hot Movies, just waiting to join my collection. Companies may still continue to produce dvd content because they still have customers without computers. Somewhere someone may have a huge collection of 8 mm porn films (loops) and they're quite content with what they have. They set up the big screen, thread a film into the Bell & Howell film projector, pop a bag of pop corn, sit back and enjoy the view. Edited by - dogzcatcher on 5/4/2016 2:44:04 AM
I doubt whether it's people who don't have computers - I have one obviously but I still buy dvds. There are hundreds of websites selling dvds. That suggests that the market worldwide must run into millions. That's milliions of people like me who just happen to like dvds. It's simple supply and demand.
I can't speak for all porn companies of course, but for plenty of them the DVD sales are the bulk of the income and the website is the bonus income. Jacco
There are several reasons I still buy DVDs. First, if you go to a big city where there are still multiple video stores in competition with a brisk walk-in business, the typical new release DVD does not necessarily cost, as Mona writes, 30 dollars. Instead it's more like $20. The Evil Angel type stuff, especially the double-discs, might sell for a bit more. Those same stores are constantly shifting stuff off the new release shelf and marking stuff down, so you can pick up DVDs that are anywhere from a year to a few years old for marked-down prices. More reasons . . . As stated above, some people like physical media. I bought DVDs for many years ("older consumer", yes) and like them. It would be nice if there were more blu-ray discs, but that's not the case. DVDs have extras/bonus features, which you may or may not get online. My Internet connection (DSL) is not that fast, and streaming isn't good. I DO get site memberships and download videos, but it takes a long time to download at my connex speed. And after I download the vids, I will STILL burn the videos to DVD because I haven't yet connected my TV to my external HDD. I like to grab an old movie that I missed buying the first time around. There are movies from the early/mid-00s that I can find on DVD in a discount bin for a few bucks, while the same movie bought as a download from online retailers might a) cost more, b) lack any of the extras in the original, and c) be in medium-resolution.
stores with rentals and video arcade booths are what's keeping most of the dvd #'s alive... also, a finished dvd movie is easier to sell to broadcast/territories since the cast/director/series/studio can all help it's appeal for those markets either singularly, or combined. so, if you can break even on a title, then get a broadcast deal or two to foreign markets, and THEN also have a decent affiliate program, then the dvd helped all of that make you a profit. and that's all folks..lol -von S.

One industry-wide change over the past couple years that has made purchasing DVDs even less appealing is the fact that most, if not all, studios reduced the number of scenes per DVD from 5 to 4.
I wonder if that has to do with what you started out as? For example, Evil Angel started out as a DVD distributor and then created their website. On the other hand, Brazzers started out as a website and then got a DVD distribution deal. I would think that something like that would play a factor as to which one earns you more money.
I understand the DVD/Bluray thing to some extent as I still buy all my mainstream movies on Bluray. But as far as porn goes, I like the membership online option best since you can pick and choose what scenes you want instead of skipping over the bad ones on DVD. More bang for your buck.
Of course, if you start out as a DVD producer you probably will outsource your website and if you start as a website you might outsource your DVD's. Since they are two vastly different markets not many companies do everything themselves, but it also means you get a smaller cut of the part you outsource. Jacco
^ But there are companies that don't outsource. Let's go back to Brazzers here. IIRC, at first they had a distribution deal through Jules, but then they hired a bunch of people away from him and started distributing their DVDs themselves. So given that they do do both themselves, which do you think they make more money off of?
^ So Pulse Distribution is (now?) owned by Manwin/Mindgeek ? I knew they distribute the MG studios' DVDs (Brazzers, Mofos, Reality Kings, Babes etc.), but didn't know they are owned by them. I thought it's only 1-2 years ago that Brazzers switched to Pulse.
Well this is definitely not a simple topic. And there are issues on consumer side as well as the provider side to consider. This topic was actually discussed a couple years ago in this old thread. Check out my comments here about why I preferred DVDs back then, I don't want to repeat those comments here: Internet porn vs. DVD porn The old timers used to watching DVDs on TV will eventually die off and/or migrate to easier ways to watch internet porn (e.g. Roku stick, digital media players, etc). The younger guys probably just watch on laptop or already know how to use such devices. But like I said in that old posting DVDs will eventually be obsoleted no matter what because mainstream media guys are phasing it out in favor of streaming. It allows them to cut cost by getting rid of middle men and disc manufacturing and it helps them protect content from pirate copying. Internet distribution model is also cheaper for porn companies and you cut out the middle men. Just like music biz (iTunes) and mainstream movies (Netflix). However, porn consumers are much less willing to pay for "streaming". They prefer downloads (see my old post). They want to own a copy of the movie. This is a key distinction between what Netflix or Hulu does and what porn companies do. Netflix is trying to prevent you from owning a copy of the movie. However, Netflix has to spend more money on infrastructure to delivery fast and reliable and streaming (i.e. they have special media streaming servers installed at local cable centers). I believe Kink.com originally tried streaming when they first started and users complained. They eventually went to a download model. With download model you have to have large library and continue producing new content. Which is what Brazzers and Kink.com do. That's how they get people to continue subscription or come back later. The internet model allows smaller porn producers and newcomers to jump in very easily. They don't have to be plugged into old distribution model etc. However, you have to be able to market your product and attract consumers. That's another reason bigger companies still produce DVDs. Its a niche that is harder for smaller companies to jump into and survive. You can goto DVD rental sites. But it won't be there forever. Just like Blockbuster died, online DVD rental sites will eventually die off.
