An example—jamesn dug around apparently in this thread trying to identify someone. Not that I’m particularly upset by that, but it did give me a bit of the creeps and it would be easy to see how that puts a chill on participation, perhaps particularly for Gays.

The other point is that this specific forum, although labeled “Gay DVD Talk” might be used for discussions like those in WN&N or pop culture, but with a gay perspective. But currently it isn’t. Largely the posts and items here are specifically about gay porn stars, what flicks have this or that attribute—the biggest dicks, the most explosive cum shots, you name it. I’m all for that but the other “gay” stuff, if you want to call it that, just doesn’t seem to fit.

I enjoy participating here but in the end, I suspect many of us read and post on other, friendlier, more wide-ranging boards.

Maybe the forum seems to limited in it's scope? At the other big gay forum I go to (which has a lot more subforums) you don't actually see many people talking specfically about gay dvds. It's usually about a particular star, who's hot and who's not, escorting, and a myriad of other gay topics. As a moderator, I try to let pretty much any tangentially gay topic stay here, so I hope people feel ok starting topics that aren't necesarily about gay dvds.

The only thread I've moved recently has been about Transgenered golf players or something like that, which I thought was just a wee bit off the main path.

Another thing is that many gay guys can easily hook up with other guys in social situations, far far more easily than straight guys with women. Porn becomes a surrogate for straight guys who can't get sex socially.

You define "bear" as a hairy, masculine man. In gay bear culture, a man may perceive himself as masculine or strive to be masculine, but may fail to be. It's a matter of how they perceive themselves, rather than what they actually are. My point is: the subculture to which a gay man identifies is not a valid measure of his true masculinity. I've come across some feminine-acting bears and muscle jocks, although they yearn to be perceived as masculine. I've also met hyper-masculine gay men who are neither bears nor muscle jocks. A gay man could perceive himself as not being very masculine, but actually be more masculine that he perceives himself to be. If you are a drag queen, well...(I've never met any naturally masculine drag queen).

Drag queens are performers and dress to be glamorous. Transvestites are men who dress as women. Furthermore, not all transvestites are gay, though most are. The overwhelming majority of Drag Queens are gay. Little straight boys don't dream of growing up and performing in front of a crowd in a sequined dress.

However, the more I read and looked at the dates of the threads it became clear that there wasn’t much movement/postings. I have been over in the straight forum and have lurked for days and posted a few times. The few times I posted, there were responses that disagreed with me but nothing I couldn’t handle.

I have found that the people that seem to be posting (in the gay forum) on a regular basis do not hold the same idea/likes I have so I haven’t been able to contribute. I view porn as fantasy situations that I would love to be in but know there is no way that would ever happen. It just heightens the thoughts to know there are people living out my fantasies.

I don’t like mainstream gay porn because it tends to be the same thing over and over (and nothing I really fantasize about)…cleanly shaved muscle men going through the motions of having sex. A 30-minute blowjob gets old to me really fast. I tend to like more amateur/underground sex with real men having sex. IMHO, it appears that there are more people here that like the mainstream stuff and something that I don’t associate with in my day-to-day life.

The one I am most familiar with (since I fit this one) is bear cub. Basically it is a younger bear, or a bear in training. At least that's how I've had it explained to me.
