I believe that with higher powered processors, more buffering, etc. that the cue smoothness would improve, but so would the cost of the player.

When you fast forward a VHS tape, you see a smooth flowing movie at maybe 4X normal speed, but using the full frame rate. On all the DVD players I have seen, when you fast forward at this speed, you see flick,flick,flick .... a series of still images from the movie at maybe three or four frames per second. Can anyone explain why it is done this way. Is this true of all players, or are there better quality ones that can provide a "smooth" cue and review like a VHS player does? [Link] |

I remember the cue on the early VHS recorders was pretty crappy too. The later models fixed it with (i think) multiple video heads and better synchronization. I know someone with a $1500 Marantz DVD player. I must take a look at the fast forward on that and see if it's any better. [Link] |

I'm not sure that the really expensive players will buy similar features. The top of the line players tend to use more audio/videophile grade components and use the increased graphics processing to improve the picture quality. [Link] |
