TLDR version: is plot in porn just there to offer legal protection for the producers? Long version: I like porn with plot, but only if serious effort is put into it, with well-written and delivered dialogue and interesting story. I also like porn without plot, just straight to sex. What I don't like is half-assed effort where they sort of gesture at a plot. And I've seen many of these. For a long time I just thought it was laziness, or they simply don't want to pay someone to write a real script. Then I heard an explanation where someone said it's for legal purpose so the producer could argue what they are doing has some artistic/dramatic/theatrical elements, that it's actually pornography (legal), not prostitution (illegal almost everywhere in US). At first I thought this can't be right, since there is so much porn out there that have no plot at all. Then upon further reflection, I think there may be something to it. First, different producers have different tolerance to risk. Big companies probably are more conservative and would be more likely to do this to avert risk, no matter how small. Furthermore, there may be a geographical factor. In very liberal places like California, prosecution is not a concern. But what if a producer or company has assets or personnel in conservative states? The risk is not as negligible, and arguably it is growing. What do others think? [Link] |

Great storytelling requires concentration on characters. We've all seen how movies with not-so-great plots were attempted to be resuscitated with two minutes of simulated sex. The worst type of sex there is anywhere on the planet is the fake sex in an R-rated movie inserted out of necessity because the drama between the characters wasn't good enough to make them sympathetic to the audience. The flip side is equally true. The worst plots there are in the world are the fake ones inserted in X-rated cinema to present the thinnest semblance of moral virtue. It reminds me of the laws in Chicago that forced adult bookstores and rental shops to display regular books and movies on the same shelves, to fulfill some ridiculous requirement to look like it was pretending to offer virtuous alternatives to porn. (I remember one Chicago shop had a Dickens shelf next to its lesbians.) Here's the thing, though: Every media producer needs to study the needs and interests of its audience. I don't know about the present day, but in the 2000s and 2010s, members of the porn industry frequented this forum, among other reasons, to sample the opinions of their public. I may be the type of porn viewer who prefers wall-to-wall women's bodies, but it's easy to see, from 20+ years of forum messages here, that I do not represent the vast majority of porn consumers. Threads that discuss what viewers like and want to see mention step-family scenarios, math teachers, parody casts of superhero films. People do like the plots. So if I were a producer, I'd decide that a certain segment of my product line should include a dramatic element. But then I'd add, we may as well make quality drama. (Certainly Digital Playground gives that mission its best shot.) How do we go about that? Certainly the actors and writers and set designers and costume designers are out there. Some of them might have great bodies. What's the sales model? Amid cheaper competition, and with the piracy factor only growing, I don't see how to pull it off. Heck, the cinema movie industry can't sustain its current business model as it is today. The only solution I see is some sort of compromise: infusing certain series with just enough plot to satiate some viewers' requirements. Perhaps not serious effort, but at least the result of serious consideration. Which just happens to be the situation we have now. Okay, so I'm not the biggest fan of bad acting prefacing good sex. But that's why there are fast-forward buttons. RFB3 |

I was just musing why some porn scenes seem to make what looks to me purely pro forma effort at it. |
