| insinuation238 Member 11 Posts 5/10 | I write mystery novels, and I am working on a project set against the backdrop of the high-end nightclub scene, which has become a sort of mass-media fascination because of Tiger Woods and David Boreanaz. The book is about a small-scale financial crook that gets roped into working as a confidential informant for an ambitious federal prosecutor who is fishing for a headline-grabbing criminal case among the private-jet class. Since the story, to some extent, is about how powerful men in the financial industry find hookups, the financial crisis is also part of the narrative. I was considering including a porn-related subplot, because porn's rocky economic road during the recession seems to fit some of the themes, and because everyone looks at porn these days, and nobody seems to talk about it. I kind of expected to learn a few more details about the sort of kinky-hot industry Sasha Grey talks about in media interviews. But a couple of hours of internet research turned up some creepy blogs and some very sad pornstar twitter feeds that paint a different picture. So at this point I am probably going to scrap the whole thing and use a character that resembles Ashley Dupre, the Spitzer call girl, rather than Sasha Grey. The only place porn stars and finance dudes would likely cross paths is Vegas which I am ambivalent about using as a major setting, and I don't understand the motivation for a porn-industry character. Based on cursory research I did on the internet, it doesn't seem like any reasonable woman would choose to do porn. It seems like a crap gig, even compared to other sex-work jobs. This seems like a good place to dump some of my notes, to see if somebody knowledgeable has a different or more interesting take on the subject. This is what the situation looks like, to me: 1. It seems like the most elite sex-work job is to be a rich dude's mistress. I live in NYC and you meet a lot of girls here who are recent college graduates and have jobs working in art galleries or as assistants to magazine editors or doing something "freelance." But they live alone in expensive apartments and wear a lot of thousand dollar shoes. Either their parents are footing the bill or somebody else is. You find a lot of these girls in the better nightclubs, looking to follow a waitress carrying magnum champagne bottles to a table near the back of the club where there is a derivatives trader or a hedge fund manager who might write a check to help cover the rent or a credit card bill. There's no quid-pro-quo, and the transactional nature isn't explicit; these people are ostensibly "dating." The girls are bright and classy, and often have elite educations, and the club girls may fancy themselves modern Carrie Bradshaws, looking for Mr. Big. But a lot of these dudes are married already and a lot of these girls are "dating" several guys and hitting them all up for "rent." The upside here ranges from a few thousand a month to tens of thousands, if she's juggling several rich guys, and all the way up to happily ever after with the CFO of Prince Charming Capital Management. It involves relatively few sex partners and it's legal. 2. High-end hookers cater to wealthy men, rich tourists, celebrities and bachelor parties. Eliot Spitzer-types pony up around $5000 a night for these girls, but some significant percentage of this goes to agencies which vet the clients. They work out of nice hotels, the clients are probably pre-screened and well-mannered, everybody uses protection, and it seems reasonably safe. As they slide down to the midrange and lower end, the pay gets lower, the pimps probably get shadier and the work apparently gets more dangerous. I don't know exactly what the difference between a $5000 hooker and a $1000 hooker is, but it probably has a lot to do with age and appearance. I'm going to take creative license and assume that the upscale ones are also well-educated and mannered, and at the lower end, you get a lot of drug addicts and foreign girls who have been trafficked by organized crime. Most of my research about this came from articles related to the Spitzer affair. 3. According to various dishy tell-all blogs and memoirs, strippers can pull down $500 to $1000 a night. The work is gross and degrading and physically demanding, but they don't have to have sex with anyone (although many of them may also moonlight as hookers). 4. Porn seems to be significantly worse than all these options. Information about how much they make is difficult to find, but the little info I could find suggests the pay seems pretty low ($500-3000 per scene). Perhaps the lack of candor is to protect some perception that these girls are raking in tons of money? The duration of a porn career seems very short (relatively rare success seems to be 100-ish scenes over 2-3 years, many girls do fewer than 10 scenes). Talent agents and exploitative pimp/boyfriend types may take a big cut of the money. Perhaps girls who do porn can charge a premium as strippers or hookers? Tiger Woods hooked up with porn stars, and occasionally, porn stars seem to hook up with musicians or reality-tv stars. But in general, I don't really see the deep-pockets financial industry crowd paying extra for girls who have been fucked in vans on videos for the internet. Perhaps there are devoted porn fans who are less affluent but nonetheless willing to lay out serious cash for perceived fantasy girl? How many of these guys are there? For someone with loose morals and no dignity, porn seems to be an extremely degrading and low-paying way to cash in on being young and beautiful. So why does anyone do this? I can only think of a couple of reasonable scenarios: 1. These girls are really kinky and just really like having sex with strangers while other people watch. This seems unlikely. 2. These girls are recruited through ads or on the internet, and convinced to travel to California as soon as they turn 18 to be "models." When they discover they've been recruited for porn, they're far from home with no money, and they're kind of trapped; shady agents or managers tie up their pay to keep them from leaving for a couple of weeks, and, during this time, book them into ten or fifteen scenes before they flee. 3. Better gigs are unavailable because of drug addiction, serious psychological issues, personality disorders and scary pimp/boyfriends who are always around. These girls are too unreliable to keep a regular strip-club job and too scary or unpleasant to do hooker work for bachelor parties or with software engineers and midlevel salesmen at Vegas conventions. 4. Fake glitz and glamor is attractive. People get photographed on red carpets at porn conventions, so they think they're celebrities. Edited by - insinuation238 on May 29 2010 [Link] |

| insinuation238 Member 11 Posts 5/10 | Appreciate the reply, and your candor. I'm glad you're happy and I hope things continue to go well for you. However, based on what I would have originally assumed about the life of a porn star, what you're telling me is pretty surprising. You're performing what I would consider to be extreme sex acts and yet, despite having very few inhibitions and apparently being enthusiastic, you're only working once or twice a week and making much less money than you could as a stripper. I would think it would take a lot of money to entice people to do these things. And the work seems very unreliable; what happens to you if you start getting less work? Just surfing around this forum, and looking at a couple of blogs, it seems like women who do this are treated disrespectfully, paid very little and often conned out of their money or manipulated into performing free sex acts to get paid work. Anyway, this information makes porn seem like a wrong digression for the story I'm working on and I'm disinclined to gloss over the seedier aspects to make it sound more appealing. But there's definitely some sort of story to tell about this industry and the people who work in it. I'm kind of interested in the phenomenon of girls who appear in a handful of porn videos and then disappear. From the discussion I saw here, the fans seem mystified, and the industry people seem very tight-lipped. Obviously, one has to respect the privacy of individuals who may feel they've made a mistake and want to close that chapter. But still, I have to wonder why and how they end up there, why they quit so quickly, and what happens to them afterwards. I expect those stories are really sad. |
| Pete Zaface Senior Member 3064 Posts 8/03 | First off, not all prostitutes have pimps. These days, all you need is a cellphone and a computer, and you're in business for yourself. It's not that difficult to learn how to screen clients to minimize your legal, physical, and financial risks. It's also not that difficult to operate under the radar, working through e-mail and private-list referrals, and have virtually no public presence on escort review sites at all. My two ATFs were a UTR college student who graduated with two degrees from Dallas Baptist Univrsity (go figure) and a UTR middle-class housewife who was funding a custody fight for her kids. The going rate for an hour in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is $200-$300. I just celebrated my birthday with a magnificent massage and a BJ from a woman who's quite acclaimed for her sessions. She charges $160 for a half hour, $200 for a hour, and is booked a day in advance. I don't know how many sessions per day she has, but you do various mathematical possibilities. Second, I don't know how it is in other cities, but it's not uncommon in some cities to obtain "extras" from strippers inside the clubs. It's a hit-or-miss proposition, varying from club to club and dancer to dancer, but word gets out among both guys and dancers as to which clubs are more fun than others. There are several advantages to the girl who provides more than a air dance in a club: she can check out the guy beforehand and decide whether she wants to go any further; the club is a controlled environment where she's unlikely to have her safety at risk; and, because her audience is captive, has consumed a few drinks, and is horny, she can command a premium. What costs $200 outside the club can run as much as $500 inside. Of course, a lot of dancers will see guys outside clubs, some in addition to and some instead of inside. Strangely, it's not uncommon to find girls who'll have sex in a club not think of themselves as prostitutes. Now, as to why girls do porn. I don't think economic desperation is as common a reason as you might think, nor do I think girls are tricked into doing porn after answering ads for modeling. The reasons are as varied as the girls. Some do it because they can do things on a porn set, in a controlled environment, that would be difficult, if not impossible to do and feel safe in the real world: DPs, DPPs, DAPs, blowbangs, gangbangs, etc. Some do it for the money, at least until the next flavor of the month comes along. Some do it to shock or rebel against their families and friends: Doing porn can be a pretty big "fuck you" to a lot of people with whom you've associated in your young life. Some do it to enhance their earnings as dancers or escorts -- some guys will pay more money to boink a "porn star" or someone they've seen on screen and fantasized about. Some do it to achieve a small degree of fame. Some do it because they claim to enjoy sex -- though, as a guy who's never gotten laid by anyone he didn't have to marry or pay, I find that hard to believe. Some do it after running into porn stars who are featuring in the clubs hey dance in, or, occasionally, they follow a friend. I continue to be amazed by the girls who do only a few videos. They could make as much money in only a little more time, and with a little more effort, by escorting -- and there wouldn't be a permanent, commercially available record of it. Escorting offers discretion and deniability that porn does not, and I cannot believe that anyone these days can do a porn shoot and not believe that everyone from high school, college, her neighborhood and family won't find out. Something like that simply goes viral these days. The Reader's Digest Condensed Version: I'll never figure it out. Good luck! ;) |

Have to work with less gross people generally. I can imagine that for every hygienic and pleasant client an escort sees, there are 9 other slobs or jerks she has to suffer through. |
| lily_cade Member 121 Posts 5/10 | Since I'm gay, being an escort was never much of an option for me (I've done parties for women as a dancer, and you know, stuff happened, but that's about as close to that as I've ever come) although I think being a rent girl is kind of hot. I was a Dominatrix at a dungeon for a while, which is one of those sex-work-without-the-sex gigs and I liked some aspects of it but I really didn't like dealing with the clients especially the flakey ones. I've met a lot of girls/people who got into porn to represent something (ie queer sexuality, or the eroticism of different kinds of bodies, or just their own selves) or because they like sex on camera. I mean, money's great but if you're only in this for the money there are definitely better jobs. You know how they say "do what you love"? Well, I think it's like that. |
| insinuation238 Member 11 Posts 5/10 | There are so many girls apparently coming into the business that there seems to be intense pressure to say yes to anything, because if you don't, the next girl will, and then the phone will stop ringing. Additionally, girls' newness seems to be their most valuable commodity, so when they've been around for a few months, they face mounting pressure to do more extreme sex acts. And then, they often stop getting booked anyway.Well, when I can't find information and I am writing for fiction, I just take the creative liberty of finding a logical way to fill in the blanks. The way I'd probably fill that one in is that some of them don't know what they're getting into. I read some interview someplace (possibly it was an interview at the beginning of a porn scene. I used the research for this idea as an excuse to watch some porn) where a girl got into porn because some dude messaged her on Myspace when she was in high school and told her he managed models. I got the impression she had been living in foster care. He sent her a bus ticket and she went out to California as soon as she turned 18. She had no money and no place to go, and when she got out there and found she was expected to do porn, she did it because she felt she had no alternative. And then she kept doing it. Maybe some of the girls who have a home to return to go back as soon as they can. Maybe they expect it to be fun and sexy and find it horrifying. Or the producers just don't like them and stop booking them. Edited by - insinuation238 on 5/29/2010 11:05:30 PM |
| WardqueenJanine Member 914 Posts 2/08 | To think that those clients who patronize women in the above range are in the lower strata of society is outright incorrect. A lot of these men are very successful professionals who are cognizant of the overcharging and are simply familar with what they can get by shopping around. As far as the women go, it is even more incorrect to characterized those who charge these rates as undereducated, too old for mainstream, afflicted with drug or other substance problems or affliated with organized crime. Those are stereotypes that are akin to urbnan legends and despite that there are girls with the issues you describe, I can say from many years of experience, that both the rates and the income of the girls have absolutely nothing to do with them. While we are exploring this subject let's also delve further into the, "...girls in the better nightclubs, looking to follow a waitress carrying magnum champagne bottles to a table near the back of the club..." Many of these I have known and they are often well known to the clubs they frequent. Although not always, a number of these clubs or bars, extract a premium from those girls who actually ply their trade in that fashion on a regjular basis and reward them with drinks and trinkets for assuring that those patrons spend sufficiently while they are in their establishments. One has to ask who is he pimp here? |

| Pete Zaface Senior Member 3064 Posts 8/03 | There was a young lass who appeared here several months ago, obviously aware of what porn was all about and what doing it would do to her life, and who was all hot to get started in spite of it. She even had nude photos up at an agency's website. Then, she disappeared; the general consensus is, I think, that she wasn't as well prepared for the reaction of family and friends as she thought she was. Now, to get back to my point, about the "safe" and "controlled" environment, which was this: If you're an adventurous girl and you want to do a gangbang, you're probably a lot safer doing it on a porn set than going to a bar and finding five guys, or even asking your boyfriend to get four of his buddies. And, to extend while I'm sure the occasional bad apple exists, especially with the plethora of web sites producing content these days, I think it's increasingly difficult in the information age to keep such mistreatment as you believe to be common a secret. Just my 1/50th of $1, and worth what you paid for it. |

| Cuddly Wombat Senior Member Just another bare bum in the shiower 1739 Posts 12/04 | Stripping is extremely physically and emotionally demanding work - the hours, unnatural positions you are constantly put in, large amounts of alcohol consumed and ungodly working hours. Not to mention the gangster bosses, generally bitchy work colleagues and weirdo clients. Stripping is very good money, but porn is definitely an easier and mostly safer working environment. For a highly sexual girl who is a born entertainer - one who loves to act, dance and entertain people - porn can be a pretty fun career choice. It is the "öther Hollywood" after all! It has everything the real Hollywood has - celebrities, sex, drugs, money and rock n roll. And life as a contract girl at a big porn company may look pretty damn attractive to a young girl busting her ass on the strip club circuit or struggling to find and keep high-paying clients in the escort world. And above all, as mentioned above, almost all porn girls share the common personality trait of being exhibitionists and wanting to be the centre of attention. Which is why we love them so! I'd recommend you watch Sasha Grey's mainstream movie "The Girlfriend Experience" and read the autobiographies by Jenna Jameson and Tera Patrick for a better ides of the uncertain worlds of high-end escorts and strippers and how a nice girl stripper/model can be happily lured into the world of porn. |

I definitely appreciate that stripping is probably fairly unpleasant, but is getting fucked in the ass. As I said, I looked around this forum, and there's a thread right now on "sex talk" where someone is asking for advice about a first porn appearance. Somebody recommended a bunch of painkillers. I looked at another girl in that thread's blog, and she had posted a harrowing story about being out of town and at the mercy of a crooked booking agent.
Do they get treated like stars? Does the industry invest in maintaining that illusion? Is there something really compelling about award shows and conventions and parties? These girls certainly can't do a whole lot of high-end shopping and partying on a hundred grand or so a year, especially if they're spending a lot of it on drugs or supporting a "suitcase pimp."

But after that initial burst of interest, aren't there are fewer opportunities, especially if the girl says "no" to the right people or "yes" to the wrong people in those first few weeks? As she goes further afield to find opportunities, is she still safe? Or does she just test her limits for a couple of weeks, experience whatever she is looking for, and then go back to the strip club where there is more money? And what about the various web porn sites that seem to be about sex with old men and ugly hobos? Edited by - insinuation238 on 5/30/2010 4:09:27 PM |

I met one young lady who had 2 job offers for summer employment (she was attending college): 1. She had already been hired to be a lifeguard at her local swimming pool; or 2. She was recruited on myspace to do nude modeling. She chose to do modeling for the summer....and she came back the following summer, too. If you look for victims, you will find them. If you look for adults making adult decisions, you will find them, too. |

I hope it's okay to use people on this thread as an example: I get Lily Cade; that's not hard to understand. She gets off on being watched, she's gay and the sex opportunities with other attractive women are enticing to her, and she probably thinks of it as a kind of conceptual art. She's not relying on it for her income, so she's not under pressure to do anything she's not comfortable with. Chloe, who posted above, said she thought about it for five years before she did it. I looked at her blog, and she seems to be attending a lot of lavish parties, and traveling a lot. She's somebody who has been out on her own, and she's capable of taking care of herself. She's into exploring her sexual limits. I can't quite see how a double penetration is pleasant for anyone involved, but I can make the logical leap to assuming she's into it. She's enjoying what she's doing, she's having a good time. She hasn't been pressured to have sex with somebody she wasn't into having sex with. I looked up Khan Tusion, and I have a harder time understanding how that happens, but maybe he's right about the thrill-seeking aspect, and maybe he does take measures offscreen to ensure that the girls feel safe. Somebody who is doing that on a large scale probably has a high level of scrutiny applied to him. But all you need to make porn now is a digital video camera and an internet connection. And with girls earning less than a few years ago and scrounging further for work, there's a lot of room for sketchy types to operate. Is the guy you've never heard of making similar videos in his basement a safe roller-coaster ride? I wonder how common the victim stories are. when I brought up the story of the teenage girl who was recruited on myspace and sent a bus ticket in the mail, people accused me of being a troll, but nobody denied that happens. In any case, that's not the sort of thing I'd want to write about. That story feels almost obvious, and there's no ambiguity to it. If I were going to use this kind of information to make characters, I'd try to show them doing something unexpected. Like a grizzled veteran porn-star(age 26) trying to get her kid into an elite pre-school. Or a Khan Tusion sort of character trying to get a female banker to approve a bridge loan to keep his business afloat. |

Anyway, like I said, the "desperate girl, tricked" isn't a good story for fiction. Readers will think the protagonist is stupid. Taking a one way bus ticket from a stranger is a stupid thing to do. Even if it really happens, some readers won't believe it's plausible, and others will lose sympathy. And it sounds like a low stakes version of international human trafficking, which is about as overused as sexy vampires. I think the best story idea I've gotten from this thread/my research is a character who is a porn director or producer who justifies himself by clearly defining his limits, this idea of what's "safe" and what's "controlled." I find that interesting; the sort of Khan Tusion moral code. Maybe this guy finds himself pushed by economic pressures to test or cross those limits, and he has to decide whether he can maintain whatever scruples he has, and still keep his business afloat, or whether he can cross the line and find a way to live with himself. Downside is that I'd have to do a lot of research to write that, and I'm not sure how much reader appeal there is in such a character. Edited by - insinuation238 on 6/1/2010 4:56:53 PM |
| fotomatt Member 78 Posts 8/08 | As an aside to an earlier post about guys shelling out big bucks at the clubs, that's absolutely true. About 14 years ago, my wife got a job as a secretary through a temp agency and was placed at a very large and well known accounting firm. These guys she worked for billed something like $300 an hour and more. They traveled a lot and would take their clients to strip clubs all the time. The kicker is that they would turn in receipts from these places to get reimbursed for their expenses. She said they would routinely turn in receipts for $30,000 for a night. They didn't seem to care that their secretaries knew and the company never objected. As long as the clients were happy. It was a sort of don't ask don't tell policy. |
| insinuation238 Member 11 Posts 5/10 |
Business entertainment and client development are also legitimate business expenses that can be deducted from taxes. This deduction effectively functions as a huge government subsidy for strip clubs, nightclubs, high-end restaurants and luxury hotels and resorts. This is the reason prices for prime sports tickets and hotel rooms rise much faster than the rate of inflation; this stuff can cost about 40% more than the market would bear in the absence of the deduction. | Colombian-Canuck Member 48 Posts 5/10 | Young girls see how pornstars live it up, making seemingly good money doing something average pretty girls think they can do similarly. So when your options are limited, i.e. no university diploma that will lead to a good career, why not go into porn? They can make good money in little time, they don't have to work 9 to 5 and to the narcissists part of us, they have hordes of guys telling them non-stop how hot they are. Today, the shame aspect of doing porn is non-existent. I'm not surprised that many are interested in getting in the biz. If only life after prime was well documented and publicized, I think less young girls would be getting into porn but that's not the case, usually fully retired stars simply disappear. There's also an impression that it is safer than prostitution but while the likelihood of having a violent day in porn is lower compared to escorts, mental games and pressures do make girls do things somewhat unwillingly. Plus, the overwhelming majority of pornstars at one point escort as well so that safety impression is contradictory. It should not be forgotten that escorts with porn experience command higher premiums just for being "pornstars". Colombian-Canuck |

Therefore, it still doesn't seem logical that they would give up anonymity to go into that career knowing that they can't go into the normal world again without having to carry around the societal stigma of having been in that career. |
