Zaer: I've been thinking about it and you are right, the majority of parents do not want their kids to go into porn therefore shame still exist.
Being known does give them more money on the escort circuit, I think that can explain why they do away with the anonymity along with the multitudes of fans following their every moves, massaging their egos..

Attention. Thrills. Exhibitionism. Adulation.
Work has slowed down so much the girl has to love sex performing for reasons other than cash.

But how does he operate like that? Does he pay a premium? Brandon quotes him suggesting that his fame and renown makes him a "safe" person to go to for experimenting with rough sex.
It seems like some people are really committed to the idea that the girls are into it, and other people are committed to the idea that it's coercive. I think the truth might be a little bit more complicated and interesting.
I kind of like the idea of sort of one of these extreme porn directors operating under a kind of cowboy moral code. I mean, people have made mobsters sympathetic by relating to them on their own terms. I think these sort of outlaw characters can be really interesting, if you get a tough, funny voice for them. I'd love to come up with a sympathetic asshole character along the lines of Kenny Powers from "Eastbound and Down."
I'm also really intrigued by how prevalent porn is, compared with how little people talk about it. I'm fascinated by how stridently people push for abstinence-only sex education, when I know that every single kid in America has looked at Internet videos of sex acts I didn't even know existed until around my third year of college.
Chuck Palahniuk wrote a book called "Snuff" about porn, but I thought it was mostly a book about how bodies were icky.

Personally dislike most of the rough and degrading gonzo stuff, and prefer Golden Age porn, when the men actually behaved in a loving and affectionate way toward their female porn mates.

Perhaps there might be new trend with women releasing sex tapes and charging a hundred thousand quid or so (this rate could come down, but would be still much higher paid than pornstars). A tape like that would outsell the conventional acted porn. Currently only minor celebrities do this, but there could be a situation where ordinary students, housewives etc could all do this. The beauty of this is that they could say the tapes were made by their husband, boyfriend etc and pretend to sincerely regret it and avoid being called a pornstar. In the past few months alone we have Shauna sand, Mindy Mcready, kendra wilkinson and now - just announced -Danielle Staub of Real housewives of new jersey all peddling their tapes.

I did & do porn because I want to. Those who have been on the board for awhile know that I have a college degree, hold professional certifications and have a complete "other" life than porn. While money is always a good thing, I've never really done it for the money. I've done it for me, because I want to, and because I enjoy it. For those who might be wondering..I came from a decent middle-class family, I was not molested as a child, and I do not drink or drug. Hey..some of us just like to fuck! Ya know???

This was an interesting thread until the OP went and used the phrase "Khan Tusion moral code." How many people in porn have produced more depravity/misogyny than Khan Tusion? (Answer: Not many.)
I don't care if the OP is a writer or not, as this is an interesting discussion. I also don't believe the OP is simply an anti-porn troll. Asking why people would do porn is a common-sense question considering the fact that probably 99% of the people (especially women) who perform in porn either leave the business unhappy and/or face negative consequences out in the "real world," from limited job options to disapproving neighbors to mortified family members, friends, boyfriends, etc. Unlike perhaps any other business, doing porn is the ultimate "can't un-ring the bell" type of work -- do it once and it's out there forever, and the person carries the "porn star" label forever. Unfortunately for the performers, not more than 1% are able to bank enough money to retire from doing porn.
Personally, whenever I see some 18-year-old newbie, I always assume some sort of issue at home -- daddy issues, drugs, controlling boyfriend, etc. (This is doubly true when I see a newbie doing a gangbang or DP in one of her first scenes. Anyone with any common sense who enters porn knows to start out vanilla and hold out as long as possible before doing anything extreme.) I'm sure there are some who don't fit this mold, but I bet it's accurate for 8 out of 10.
I think it's much harder to discern motives for women who enter porn in their 20s, 30s, 40s. I think there's probably an inverse relationship between the woman's age and (a.) her need for money and/or (b.) her desire to rebel (against parents, ex-boyfriend, etc.). I've felt sorry for a lot of teen performers who have the deer-in-headlights look, but then I've seen non-teen performers like Tera Patrick who seem to have entered porn with open eyes and a more rational mind (business reasons, exhibitionism, etc.).

insinuation238, You seem interested in understanding, so I'll offer my take. I produce amateur porn and have very little experience with the 'fresh off the bus' types that you seem to be focused on and so many other writers seem to want to focus on. I work with real couples having real sex. I'd say most of them decide to make an adult video because they want to enjoy something new sexually. They really don't care what others think about what they're doing, they have a great time making a video with me and get paid. They don't make enough to retire, but they always take the money with them when they leave. But more than anything, they leave with a smile and they had a great time. I get lots of exhibitionists that enjoy having someone (me) watch them having sex, and they like the idea that someone else (viewers) will watch them having sex too. I'm always struck by how many of the girls seem reluctant to put their clothes on after the shoot. They enjoy being naked and enjoy having sex and enjoy having new sexual experiences. For many of them, making an adult video is just one more sexual exploration. Some are strippers, some are swingers, but most are just out looking for fun. Making a video is just another new experience.
For some, this is a 'one and done' experience. Once they've done it, they're off to another new experience. For others, they enjoy it and look for other opportunities to make more videos and I see them show up in videos from other producers. For some, they enjoy it enough and are attractive enough to move into the commercial portion of the business. Those that have, genuinely seem to be enjoying themselves. Commercial opportunities for couples are limited, and generally, they need to decide to work individually if they want much work. Many adult video performers entered the commercial side of porn through the amateur porn door.
Amateur porn may not fit the storyline you're looking for, but it's part of the overall industry, and so hopefully it provides some insight into how and why some in the industry got there and why they stay. I'm sure there are some that got tricked into the industry or do things they don't want to do, but those that I work with seem to do it because they enjoy it, and they also get paid. That may not fit your paradigm – you seem convinced that because it's not logical for you, it's not reasonable, but it is fun for some.

I think more often than not porn is just the logical "next step" for many girls who are already on the fringe of the sex trade.
A girl is a stripper and perhaps making good money. She then notices that pornstars who strip make much money. They get to talking with a pornstar who strips and the pornstar tells them of all the positives that come from being a pornstar and ends up helping the stripper get into the porn biz. The girl shoots a few movies and her stripper rate much higher. The bigger her porn career gets the bigger her stripper career gets.
A girl does some modelling and is making good money but would like to make more. She gets a few nude modelling gigs and the pay is better. She then finds out that doing sexy spreads with other girls pays even better so she does some of that. Doing this she comes in contact with porn girls and PENTHOUSE PETS who make more money and get side gigs besides doing photo shoots. The girl is already shooting "softcore" girl shoots so going hardcore G/G isn't that much of a stretch and the pay is better. If you do it for still shots what's the big deal doing it for a movie, plus the pay is better. The girl becomes a fan fav doing girl/girl porn and now the offers start pouring in to do Boy/girl. At some point the girl accepts the offer.
A girl is escorting and making good money but realizes she could make more money escorting if she were a were a pornstar. Hell, she banging strange guys anyway, why not bang perhaps better looking guys on film, get a bit of celebrity going and charge more for the escorting thing. The girl is just as good looking as many of the girls doing porn and banging a guy for money is banging a guy for money...why not do porn?
A girl started taking nude pics of herself posted them on a site. At some point she realizes she can film herself having sex with her boyfriend/husband and lots of guys will pay to see it. After doing this for awhile and seeing how much money is to be made. The girl decides to go to the next step and try and get into the porn business because she's already doing it on a smaller scale anyway and if she becomes a pornstar more people will find out about her and her site and the money will be even better or doing what she was already doing anyway.
A girl has a friend who's doing porn while she works at a low paying and dull regular job. The porn friend seems to have lots of money and lots of time to have fun. The porngirl friend is always saying the girl is pretty enough to do porn and the money is much better than she making and it's not so bad. At first the friend says there's no way she could do it but over time as her job becomes even more mundane and the porngirl friend seems to making even more she slowly starts to consider it. The pornstar friend then takes her to a pornshoot and it doesn't seem so bad. Maybe a girl/girl scene wouldn't be so bad. The girl gets paid more for one day than she made all week at her other job and suddenly porn has converted another girl.
These senarios probably cover about 80% of the girls who've gotten into porn.

There are two factors that drive a woman into porn or escorting. Money and limited options.
All the talk about wealth, fame, or loving two cocks in their ass while being spoon fed manchowder is kayfabe.
No woman with multiple degrees and the option to hold a professional designation is going to opt to pull a train in a California studio warehouse.

At least not on film. I work near a swingers club and know some swingers. Women with high paying high profile jobs swing and do all sorts of kinky stuff. People you would never think would. People with money/educations have desires and fantasies too. Plus they have the money make them happen and/or to go places to where no one will find out it happens.

I may be wrong, but I doubt it.
I'm talking about a degree from a practical faculty, like health science, engineering or environmental studies. Education that will land you a profession as opposed to a job. A general bachelor's degree in arts/humanities is about as relevant in the real world as it would be in the porn industry.

It always seemed to me that any decent looking girl who is very uninhibited can get a job of almost any kind and sleep her way to lots of perks and advancement. It's called sexual favors--not exactly a new idea. That's why prostitution makes the least sense of all to me. If every member of the board, including the chairman, can screw the receptionist multiple times, I'm sure said female will benefit greatly from it. I'll even go as far as to say this: when I was in college, I walked in on a professor getting some service under his table from a female student. I wonder if she got a degree?

This has nothing to do with Mindee, but everyone is always the execption to the rule.
Example, "guys that wear wifebeaters, baseball caps backwards, and dogtags are douchebags!" (it's true, btw)
Guy wearing a wifebeater, baseball cap backwards, and dogtags: "That's true, but I wear my dogtags not because I'm a douchebag like other douchebags, but I want everyone to think that I was in the miliary so I can make up stories about being in the shit!"

Very strange forum to come across. Im in the industry and I have been here for over 5 years. This job is beyond great. The fame, the money, and the sex are all part of having a great porn career. If you have a head on your shoulders and dont do drugs you will get paid the amount you are asking for. I have never been jipped or desperate enough to take less money than expected. Porn is a great industry. You meet tons of people who in return become your friends. I hate when people talk about porn and have no clue, they only assume things which are totally wrong.

Thanks for posting that. I've always thought that if you take away the public stigma out the equasion, porn would be a fun gig...provided you aren't forced or tricked into doing anything or anyone who don't want to.

It is..and I learned something valuable a couple of years ago. I had some trouble in my everyday world when some people made my life very miserable over my porn life. I wrote about it extensively back then. But what I found was that it was my friends in the porn business who came to my aid and stayed by me & with me, while my supposed friends in the everyday world all ducked and ran for cover.

If you like sex and not afraid/shy to do it on camera + if you have a dynamic on camera personality + If you have a head on your shoulders and don't need the spoon or the pipe or the fire water +
if you can manage your finances effectively + if you can avoid getting involved in relationships +
if you can do all of the above, you have a good shot at a career that may last perhaps a decade. There are
exceptions, but by and large Porn actress come and go like the "A" train. Miss one?, another comes right along.
It's no different in Hollywood, ton's of 1 hit wonders there. Cheers and good luck.

There have been a lot of posts since I last checked this thread.
I checked back here, because I was thinking about this idea again after the Charlie Sheen incident. The woman involved insisted that she was not a hooker, but a porn star. But the story now seems to be that Sheen ordered her from an escort agency while dining in a private room at Daniel (Boloud) in NYC (the tasting menu there is $600 a plate). Her price for the evening was $12000, though I see nothing about her that's much more desirable than $1000 an-hour Ashley Dupre.
There's definitely something interesting about the people who would get involved in this. I'm still not sure how I would make the story about a porn-star into something I'd be able to find an original take on, especially at novel length.
Obviously, there's a lot of writing about sex, from literary stuff down to "Penthouse Forum." I think the mainstreaming of porn and the impact of that over the last few years on how people relate to each other is one of the few meta-narratives about sex that isn't totally mined-out.
There's also an interesting story about porn as a microcosm for the tumult of the US economy in the aughts. The porn industry clearly expanded due to the Internet. Customers who might have been interested in the product but wouldn't go to a porn store were suddenly accessible. Porn has been an early killer-app for various widely used technologies; the VCR, the DVD, high-speed internet, secure online transactions, digital video cameras, streaming online video.
But then the market seems to have saturated, and piracy seems to have eaten porn the same way it ate music (and might eat books). Like real-estate or finance or even mainstream entertainment, porn is an industry that was flush with excess and might be facing a new austerity.
How that might effect people on a personal level is interesting too. A lot of people mention that strippers or hookers can raise their income by doing a couple of porn scenes and calling themselves porn stars. But now that there is so much porn, pretty much any stripper or hooker who wants to can probably be a "porn star." Has that been diluted? Is there any real celebrity to be achieved as a porn-star anymore, now that there are no more porn-theaters? Do all of these girls think they will be Sasha Grey or Jenna Jameson?
Are lots of these girls, in fact, partying with celebrities like Charlie Sheen?
There's maybe an interesting story about a porn star who was buying Louis Vuitton and Cadillacs in 2006-07, and now she's older and in less-demand, and there's less money around generally. What happens to her could be worth exploring.
There's also a possible story about somebody who owned one of these internet companies that was flush in cash and hot girls a few years ago, and now they're shooting in a warehouse or an office park and they're barely solvent. The idea of people shooting porn in foreclosed dream-mansions in Florida is a funny metaphor for the whole contemporary era.

this thread "why would anyone do porn?"
would yield similar responses if it were titled
"why would anyone want to drive a bus."
"why would anyone do drugs"
"why would anyone do that" et al.

From what I've seen most pornstars that esort won't really publically admit it. Besides being against the law it's seen as a lower rung in the sex biz. It's the attitude of porn movies are artistic, it's a product being made and the girls are being picky about who they have sex with. Unlike a hooker who presumably does any guy with enough cash. Most people don't see much of a difference between the two....including the pornstars who do it but claim they don't but everyone just goes along with the charade because it's the pornstars who seem more concerned about it than anyone else.
It's your story and you know what you want to do but I think you're approaching from the wrong angle. There are stand out pornstars with interesting stories. I'm sure girls like Jenna, Sasha, etc., all have interesting tales and takes on the porn biz and porn life but I don't think how they got into porn is the that unique and is only an interesting sidebar at best. In my opinion the real interesting part is how they handled life and their choices after the choice to enter porn was made. What kind of impact did that have on their life and relationships. I know it sounds cliche but depending on the story it could make for a great tale to be told.
I don't know if a lot of them are partying with a celebrity on Sheen's level but many of them interact with celebs. Rockstars, athletes, and actors watch porn and are aware of the girls that star in them. If you have the money and fame to hang out and party with girls are you going to hang out with random girls or pornstars who you might be a fan of, who've seen doing crazy stuff in movies and seem more likely to put out? On the other side of the coin you have some pornstars who are like so many other women and are attracted to the famous and wealthy. Pornstars are known and pretty enough to get into places other girls can't and have a much easier time meeting celebs.
Eh. Hollywood actress, strippers and women married to rich guys go through the same thing. Nothing special about that in and of itself.

Maybe it's just me, but I kind of feel sorry for one starlet, who writes of having a crush on someone who works out at the same gym; the star is irrelevant. The point is, what if she really likes this guy and he finds out she has been in porn for several years and holds that against her. That's the thing, Porn stars need to keep in mind. I'm sure there are plenty who are level headed, mature and have thought things through about what will happen when folks they care about learn of their career, or past career, and they most certainly will. To be clear, I'm not judging at all; it's just that some potential partners probably wouldn't be able to handle or accept a partner that had a celluloid, sexual past...especially those who have filmed harder edged things like gang bangs etc. Most women, or men, aren't mature enough to think of the long term impact and realize that their scenes are going to always be around and there is nothing they can do to make them go away. All, I'm saying, is anyone considering this career should think those things thru, that's all.
