Despite the fact thats its a billion dollar industry the biggest porn star Jenna only makes a fraction to what the biggest mainstream stars make. Unless you build an empire like Larry Flynt or Hugh Heffner if you are on the lower end of the totem pole your a boxcover girl for a couple of years and then you fade away and end up working in brothels or touring the country as an escort.
Financial success often leads to personal respect. Hence why Larry Flynt, Hugh Heffner and Jenna command a certain amount of admiration from the average working Joe.
However, the low earning stripper, porn peddlar and escort are still perceived to be in a seedy low class occupation.
The only way to wipe away peoples sneers is with plenty of $$$ coming in. It justifies what you do.

What is it you envision for the industry? A Hollywood-like star system with top stars making 25 million per film? Porn is what it is. The stars are transient and always will be. Do you think that there are a lot of women who want to be fucked up the ass four times a week with a nine inch cock for the rest of their working lives? Post porn lifestyles can vary from escort to soccer mom. If they make the most of their time in the limelight they can accrue a decent nest egg.

Kurt Russell Jodi Foster Jason Bateman Drew Barrymore John Cusack Anthony Michael Hall (kind of) John Travolta Christian Bale Christian Ricci (sort of) and Leonardo DiCaprio for the win.
Porn, by definition, is meant as fodder for masturbation. When you feel as comfortable discussing your most intimate sexual experiences with your friends and co-workers as you do discussing Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise, et al, then porn will be taken seriously. Assuming of course that any of that shit can be taken seriously to begin with.
I don't agree. I would love to see a Brandon Iron trying to sell the latest Baker's Dozen on the Tonight Show. Or Alexis Malone setting up a clip with her first DP.
I couldn't care less if it is underground or not. That has nothing to do with why I watch porn.

On of the reasons porn is frowned upon is cause people still live with the misconception that porn is drugged-up girls with low self esteem just trying to make money for the next hit. A way for seedy businessmen to make money from taking advantage of girls on camera.
The only way to make it accepted, (if that is what you want) is to drag it out into the light. Clean it up. Show that it's just normal people making a decent living out of a fantasy. We know that it's normal peole, we talk to them everyday here in the forums. But I doubt the public do.
What do you mean by taking it seriously? Christian fundamentalists seem to, too much so. Porn makes a lot of money, but not nearly as much as mainstream. Pay is proportional. Interest by most fans is also transitory. They don't really follow who is who, while many can tell you who directs what and what films somebody has been in for mainstream.
yeah, im having a problem with the definition of 'seriously' Its taken seriously by the people that make a living from it, and the consumer that buys it.

People aren't going to even respect Jenna, who's pretty damned wealthy, as much as the lawyer who lives next to her or the baseball player across the street from her in our lifetime.
If you make a lot of money stripping or as an escort, chances are you're probably not telling a lot of people about it.
Having a lot of money, certainly makes it easier to deal with the ridicule and judgement, but those things aren't going to stop anytime soon, here, in the US at least.
Heck, I have a really hard time taking it seriously. I do wonder why Jenna hasn't been asked to do one of the late night talk shows. She's just that huge of a celebrity and so beautiful, charismatic and articulate, that she could pull it off if anyone could.
But to promote something like her book or a future book, not to discuss her next porn release. That's not gonna happen. If Kimmel hasn't done it, then there must be someone telling them NO WAY. I'd love to see her do Letterman, though. Literally!
I seem to recall Seymore Butts on Conan a few years ago. Did anybody else see that?

I actually think a good number of even the people who buy it, openly look down at the people who do it.
I'm a libertarian and, sometimes, even I struggle with the issue of paying for sex or sex for a living issues.
Probably has to do with being raised in a puritanical country. That's hard to shake later in life even if you're liberal.

To promote FB probably, but I doubt much about his business was really discussed.
A reality show on SHO is considered mainstream enough to get you on a talk show like Conan's, just like Jenna's book would have been a reason to get her an invite.
They wouldn't have Adam on to discuss his next Tushy film.
I take porn as serious as I want to. I really do enjoy it obviously, but I also understand that it's not the most important thing in my life. But boy, it sure does help whenever I'm alone and horny!
I've never respected somebody merely for being wealthy. How they aquired it maybe, traits that they have, but never for lucre.
And yes, many do openly look down on porn stars. More so than politicians and lawyers. If the last two elections have told you anything, this will not change soon.
Dac just go ahead and take the easy one. I don't mind. It's a discussion forum, right?

Carrot Top is on the Tonight Show all the time but no one takes him seriosly. Also, Ron Jeremy was on Conan once too. Conan isn't really the forum to be taken seriosuly on. He has a masturbating bear and an insult comic puppet dog. Hilarious but not serious.
I'm not saying you'll automatically be taken seriously by being on the talk shows. But on the other hand you won't be not taken seriously just because you're on Conan. He has all the stars too.
It's a way for porn to be mainstream by the public getting to know the people on and behind the camera. Anyways, I'm not declaring the rules to follow or saying I know anything about this. I'm merely thinking out loud.
I guess that in america the wealth factor is of major importance, but in other places of the world the more you make the less respect you get... and I guess I live in one of those places cuz wealth to me equals greed. The cash is supposed to, in some way, go back into your work in my oppinion.
Most of the entertainment I find good enough is more or less underground, so I couldn't care less about porn going mainstream - I would look down on the productions just as I look down on almost every Hollywood production. If you think porn flicks are predictable today, just imagine how utterly boring they would be in the mainstream...
I think lots of younger people take it seriosly and can discuss it without feeling uncomfortable, but young liberal people does not rule the world and probably never will...

If porn was not taken seriously no one would fight against it. Talk about pornography to the wrong people and you will end up discussing kiddie porn or snuff. Too many people don't get it that you can be into pornography but detest the abuse of children (or adults), and that one is an industry that doesn't make a secret of what it does and works its ass off to comply with law while the other is cliques of criminal assholes that keep their making of sick inhuman stuff in the dark. But these are difficult to find and it's much more efficient for government to take legal porn studios, shops or websites down because they don't hide themselves. And people will be glad that something has been done against stuff oh so much related to kiddie porn or snuff, and it will show in the next elections. Porn is taken seriously as a danger. Whether porn will ever be taken seriously as an entertainment business or even as a useful valve to release sexual gauge pressure - I don't know and I don't think so. Why some politicians that bleed countries for four years are more respected than porn stars that just bleed their panties once a month is beyond me. I wish people would be shocked by what hurts them, not by what makes them cum.
You just spent three seconds of your life to read this. You wanna fuck me
The closer it gets to being mainstream the more watered-down (or should I say the more limitations) it has.
I feel the adult market is rebellious by nature. So if mainstream accepts the adult market then a new form of porno would need to start from scratch.
A good example is rap music. During the mid 80's it became mainstream and you had fred flinstone dressing like Run-DMC in commercials. Within a few years, you saw gangsta rap. A new more "rebellious" form of rap.

Porn is taken seriously on ADT - by a select, knowledgable, discernable group. I'd prefer it if porn stayed purely in the province of our elite little band of hedonists, but I fear that a watered-down 'porn-lite' for mainstream consumption is inevitable over the next 20 years.
Yes, they have Rolls Royce automobiles that they keep in the garage during the week, and only take out on the weekends. They don't want to call attention to themselves.
While not exactly about porn, I don't think profiting from something necessarily justifies it.
Sounds too much like the mantra of an Enron Executive.
I'd like to add that we will never reach a point where parents are ok with their daughters being escorts or porn stars. That acceptance will always be in the extreme minority.
Anyone remember that thread last year, where a few ADT'ers admitted that they wouldn't want their daughters to do porn?
Porn will never be taken seriously by the "mainstream", but who really cares anyway. Sex in exchange for money will always be frowned upon by a large number people, and people who profit from it will be in the same boat.
Females in porn will always be looked at as victims as oposed to people will talent. The males in porn are looked at as scumbags who take advantage of them. Sex on camera will never be considered a talent by most either. People like most of us here, who openly admit to watching it, will also be looked at as perverts or people who support the degrading the women.
I can't help but wonder what is considered the 'mainstream' audience nowadays? I'm a 45 year old white collared professional with the house, picket fence, and a kid. I pay my taxes, vote, believe in god and all the other bs I've somehow matured into. I no longer drink, smoke, dope, gamble, and the only time I'll have unprotected sex is during a LTR. I wonder exactly who then considers it a 'vice' that I appreciate the beauty of a womans body and her ability to be as creatively expressive with the talent she has acquired?
It gets respect all the way to the bank for companies like Time Warner ATnT DIsh and the like.
It's the redheaded stepchild of board rooms across the world. They like the meat but don't neccessarly want to hear the crys from the slaughter house. You'll probably never see any stockholders returning any dividend checks because it came from smut. Now that's respect.

Agreed.
I believe that if someone made a mainstream movie that used a porn actor as one of the main characters and the movie made alot money, say $100 million, porn would be taken more seriously. It would open the door for porn actors in Hollywood, just like what's happened for rappers.
I disagree about the rebellious nature of pornography.
When the term was coined it was apparently catering to the upper class (not everybody could read) by upper class "satellites" (artists sponsored by the aristocracy, wealthy), and nowadays the part associated with the "-graphy" thingy - which includes imagination - got lost, with the invention of videos.
Do you really think that 98% of these unimaginative videos come from a pool of rebellious talent?
Rebels have at least some imagination!
In most cases the quality and intention of the product says "crap made by moronic scumbags too incompetent to get a job in the mainstream movie/commercial/music video/TV market for morons unable to get laid".
Coming from Europe (Germany to be precise) I think in Europe porn is more-or-less mainstream now and an accepted part of life. We have sex shops selling porn DVDS all over the high street in many cities. Even in the UK porn is no longer sold in dingy little shops with their windows blackened out but openly in well-lit shops. There was a huge sex shop on Tottenham Court Road in London a few years ago -- don't know if it is still there but i think it is -- that occupied 3 floors and sold porn DVDs as well as sex toys where all sorts of people went without any feelings of shame. Also, talking of movies and mainstream European films have been including explicit, non-simulated sex, in them for the last 15 odd years from Romance in 1999 by Catherine Breillat to last year's Nymphomaniac by Lars von Trier which starred a whole bunch of famous actors. Just off the top of my head, Shortbus, Chronicles of a French Family, Desire Q, Les Choses Secretes, 9 Songs, Baise-Moi, Elles, etc. etc. are all mainstream non-porn films with real sex in them and the latest is the Spanish Diet of Sex. Gasper Noe's 'Love' is about to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and is said to be more explicit than even Nymphomaniac... It's become normal in Europe to see this and no-one bats an eyelid anymore except maybe readers of the Daily Mail who are the UK newspaper equivalent of Fox News! All the films i've mentioned above have gotten UK-wide and Europe wide releases in main cinema houses specialising in art cinema which are very popular all over Europe. Moreover, they are shown uncut and often to anyone who is 16 and above (at least in Germany). I don't want to propagate stereotypes but it seems the USA is still very puritanical when it comes to sex but violence in movies is OK for 12 year olds! I watched a German film at the cinema called Das Wilde Leben which was the story of a model and groupie from the 60s who dated Hendrix and Mick Jagger and it was rated 12 here. The film was full of both male and female full frontal nudity throughout as well as sex and even had a scene of an explicit blowjob shown close up. I repeat it was released all over and was rated 12! (I think it was released in the USA as Sky High or something but in a very few screens across the country.) - The point being, in Europe at least, porn is now mainstream.
Glad to be of service amazing blue. I think one of the problems for the USA and sex is that the Christian fundamentalists wield a lot of political power which they simply don't in Europe since although many people might describe themselves as 'Christian' the number of people who actually take it seriously is close to zero and more and more people are becoming atheists. Europe is by far less religious than the USA! I am not against religion at all but I do object when it plays a role in public life/politics. For example in censoring films or art etc. Remember the furore in the USA when Janet Jackson's nipple popped out during the Superball or something? I read it and thought -WTF is wrong with these people! --- we see nude people all the time on public TV let alone satellite TV! Also I remember last year the US remake of the British teen TV series 'Skins' was cancelled half-way through because it showed 16-17 year olds kissing etc. and making out and having simulated sex (though no nudity) - due to pressure by the Christian Right. The UK series went on for 5 or 6 seasons and was MUCH more explicit than the US one. (Or the fact that no distributor in the USA would touch the remake of Lolita starring Jeremy Irons FFS!) to summarise I think it is due to the unfortunate influence of the Christian Right in your country. Hope I haven't offended anybody.
I agree with your last sentence. The problem is that a lot of cinemas won't show such films because the number of people wanting to watch them might not make it economically viable although I think in Europe we have much less of an issue with this than in the USA. I remember seeing 9 Songs at a cinema in the UK and it was jam-packed. I doubt it even got a full nationwide release in the USA. To see Nymphomaniac one had to prebook it was so popular!
The French film, Elles, (this is the IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1549589/) had a scene of a guy pissing on a escort girl which he had hired for the night and it actually showed the guy really pissing all over on her breasts! In France it was rated 12, in Germany 16, in Sweden 15...in the USA it was given the commercially crippling NC17 rating! --
I so wish i could agree with you. However, the new uk porn law practically was made to destroy whatever porn pretentions in uk were left. And except for maybe a couple things that are done in some european countries like spain, france or italy, there isnt really a porn industry or a star system like in usa. I think many years will pass until we can see a real industry in Europe or UK. And trust me, i really hope im wrong I live in UK, btw Edited by - metalc on 5/15/2015 12:39:19 PM
All very well said, and I don't think anyone should be offended by this. It's simple the truth that the Christian Right in our country has a lot of influence and power in the media, causing risque television programming like Skins to be maligned so much that you can only imagine the reaction that pornography gets. There are actually politicians here that want to ban porn (I believe wanting to replicate what happened in Iceland). It's interesting hearing that you guys didn't think much of the Janet Jackson. That incident had HUGE implications as far as how the FCC mandated broadcasters. Radio stations who were getting away with playing uncensored songs or talking about sexually explicit matters were suddenly observed much more closely and fines were handed out big time. I think it's cool how countries like yours can have a good number of Christians in the population without people making their beliefs part of everybody else's everyday life.
I agree that the new UK porn laws ruin porn in that country, but they weren't surprising to me. I remember them shutting down a number of BDSM type sites that would have likely been just fine in the USA or Mainland Europe. I think that countries like Spain, France and Italy will be producing more porn in the years to come. Those 3 countries are already producing stars that crossover to my country (Anissa Kate, Nikita Belucci, Valentina Nappi, etc.) and I'm sure that trend will only continue IMO. I do think that we have the best porn industry and stars here in the USA, along with the best producers. It's just a shame that the porn and the people who appear in it are looked down upon so much. Though I guess I should be glad we aren't being hammered with laws like Iceland, UK, etc.
I'm from the UK but live on the European mainland! Yes, that new anti-porn law banning face-sitting etc. is just stupid. Unfortunately that's the Tories for you -- backward thinking old farts scared of progress! However, I think that the public is too liberal on social issues like porn for the law to be effective. Its also impossible to stop people watching what they want -- and you can always buy stuff from EU websites or pornshops!! To be fair since about 2000 the BBFC - British Board of Film Censorship/Control has not cut or edited any movie for sexual reasons -- (except for the sickening A Serbian Film but that was for sexual violence) So things aren't really so bad. I wish we had more open attitudes though like the Dutch and Germans do... At any rate we're much more liberal than the USA!
When did the UK really have a thriving porn industry? I can only recall Ben Dover and that's really it. We have no company that can compete with the EU or USA porn major players. The only good one apart from BD was Harmony -- is it still going? and Killergram but I don't know how big they are. There was a company called Joy Bear which produced very erotic -- not extreme at all -- hardcore porn for mostly couples but I don't know what happened to it. It featured beautiful EU porn models like Yasmine Fitzgerald etc...
