If I had to guess, I'd say it dates to being in dorm rooms and trying to squelch noise. But that is almost certainly not it. I'm sure it's instinctive.

From my own experience, I think there might be something to this thing about oral stimulation, or at least oral sensitivity in the sexual sense for women. Kissing aside, which most agree is pretty much a turn-on for both sexes.

Think of the "Lolita" scenario that we typically see played out in film or on T.V., as the man seduces the girl. They will show him gently, then insistently running his fingers across the mouth of the girl, with her eventually parting her lips and opening her mouth so that he can insert a finger, or fingers, which she will then lick and suck on as she becomes more and more aroused. I'd always seen this as a metaphor for things that couldn't actually be shown. Him shoving his tongue in her mouth or her sucking on his dick. Or him shoving ANYTHING between her legs. Especially in the scenario with an older man and a much younger girl. But I do think there is a sexual component and worth to this act itself, apart from what it might otherwise represent. It seems to advance some women's arousal, and or, contribute to their orgasm or release. I've had it happen to me with girlfriends and eventually with my old lady.

A thousand years ago when me and the old lady were still energetic and randy, we were going at it pretty good one night. Straight missionary and I was doing my best to bring home the bacon. As she got closer to climax, she kept grabbing my hand and sticking my thumb in her mouth and sucking hard. She didn't want me to pull my dick out to suck on it, she wanted me to keep fucking, but she just had to have my thumb in her mouth. And as she came, she shoved three of my fingers in her mouth and sucked for all she was worth. This floored me, because my wife is not that sexually adventurous or sexually uninhibited. And she hadn't done this before. And this didn't seem like something she thought about or planned, it almost seemed primal or instinctive. And the key was, when I tried to do it to her in other encounters, (generally during foreplay or earlier in the actual proceedings), she usually wasn't receptive. But when we were rockin' and rollin', and she was on auto-pilot, and things were happening involuntarally, she would do it. Not always, but enough to make me think there was some kind of innate oral sexual gratification need being met.

I'd had similar experiences with other women before, but they were much freakier all around, so I didn't really consider it too much.
