Since then I absolutely can not make a post with Firefox. I hang in cyberlimbo waiting to get back to site after hitting Enter Post. I will neither get back to the site or time out instead the little progress cursor just sits and spins for 15 minutes or whenever I say fuck it and close down Firefox. I had been getting around this using Chrome but now it is doing the same thing. I'm using IE now if anyone can read this then at least it is working for now. I'm sure the update has to have something to do with it because this started my first session on Firefox after the update was through. It is only happening on this site though. (I am having problems on another site I'm a member of with getting a bunch of gobbleygook every time I use the quote function there but it is letting me post.)  [Link] |

Have you uninstalled AVG to see whether you can access the site without it running? If all else fails, cal AVG tech support. You've got a paid version, so this should be their problem. Best of luck! The regular scan works fine. The BSOD problem happens on both computers I updated AVG on when I attempt to run the AVG Anti-Rootkit scan. So, I'm going to say AVG 9.xx.xx currently has some issues (which seem to be bi-partisan, too)  [Link] |

I switched to Chrome and made that post but now Chrome just hung up on me on this post.(Chrome worked the second time I tried it here.) And I was right about the wedding. Oops that was the latest as of five minutes ago. Now the latest is that when I go to edit my profile on IE I get a Service Unavailable screen though I can still navigate the rest of the forum. Have you tried reinstalling FF (either uninstalling or reinstalling FF ontop of existing installation)? This has helped me sometimes when I've had weird browser specific problems in the past. 2). Just for shits and giggles, have you tried Safari? 3). Have you tried repairing/cleaning your registry with one of those all-in-one utilities like a cleaner (CCleaner) - it's free (I have vetted both)? 4). Not sure of your technical experience/level, but when I have a problem where I end up spending a lot of time, I always have 'wipe - fresh reinstall Windows' in back of my mind, if conducive. Then as soon as it installed, it went nuts telling me I had some Malware in my system 32 directory. No matter what I tried (delete it, ignore it, etc.) it kept finding dll files and telling me they were Trojan Horses and to do something. At one point I think I had 10 versions of that module active and growing to the point that my machine couldn't do anything else. I shut down and rebooted only to have it start up again, over and over. Finally came up in Safe Mode and tried System Restore, which failed because AVG 8 was no longer available. So I rebooted again, came up in Safe Mode, ignored System Restore and went to Remove Programs and got rid of it. Whew! I guess that's it for me and Avira. [Link] |

Downloaded from Tucows, that I went to directly. 2. Registration was the first part of the install NOT the download. I just looked at the link you provided and it eventually leads you to a CNet download. That download file has the same name (avira_antivir_personal_en .exe) and is the same size (32 Gb) as the one I downloaded from Tucows. Then, one never knows. If I had to guess, I would blame it on a compatibility issue with my specific O/S (Windows XP -Professional) and this particular version of Avira.  Not something that I have the expertise to resolve. I consider myself lucky to have recovered. I installed AVG 8 again and System Restore is happy. BTW, AVG doesn't require that you even be on-line to install version 8. Never-the-less I dread having to go to Version 9. I've been using AVG free from the get go and really liked it until Version 8. [Link] |

I need to pay money for this? I have always liked dividing my anti-virus/anti-malware needs between AVG and CounterSpy (plus a few additional free things that I run when I choose). Right now, I'm planning to not renew AVG, and upgrade my CounterSpy to Vipre (same people), which adds in anti-virus to their package. Sunbelt Software has always been first-rate, and never screwed me up yet :) [Link] |

It's been a great (free) firewall. Between AVG (free) and Kerio (free) I can count on one hand all the Malware I've had occasion to remove from my systems going back over 17 years of on-line (dial-up) usage. [Link] |

Although it's one of the better AV suites out there (at detecting total signatures), it is one of the worst and is notorious for false +. I've seen this in personal experiences as well as AV comparison report. In the end, it's free and really effective (except for the false +). I don't mind them cause I've been pretty good at figuring out if the false + is legit or not (look at the path of the file and think of program association). Avira's heuristic algorithms aren't good, but I'm guessing they don't have shit loads of $$$ coming in like Symantec or Kaspersky. As for personal firewalls, I know everyone has favorites, but I've tried most all of them. My favorite by far was Sygate, but after they stopped dev'ing SPF, I finally settled on Comodo. Comodo is free (for now), powerful, and very effective (I can't remember where, but I read a comparative test showing it stopped and didn't leak much/if any in many different test - only Online Armor competed with it).
