It can indicate fright, and is often used that way in comedic pieces or in satire. But it is also used to declare surprise or astonishment so it can go both ways in terms of indicating something negative or positive.
U are right. 'Yikes' is inappropriate for indicating a pleasant surprise. I would have gone with 'Woah' 'Holy Shit' etc. At first I thought he was posting up pics of some deformed mutant porn star or something lol. :)
