Float_my_boat  All-Star Member 1311 Posts 6/09 | Posted - Sep 15 2012 : 3:06AM Todd Gack, actually that link you refer to Amia's hair is normally colored, but the photographer wasn't too skilled (in my opinion). That big circular white light in the background is a gelled (thin colored plastic sheeting used to color the lights) flash head which is blasting directly into the camera lens. What appears to be purple hair is (what's called) ghosting and the light bounces between the camera lens elements. The guy who photographed her should have probably lowered the flash output and angled that head and used something like flags (rigid black "flags" to block extraneous light that are mounted on light stands). Seeing as the background light was so over the top he would have been better served lowering the power and controlling the front lights. It's mostly a matter of ratios to get the deep purple he wanted to separate Amia from the background. I'm no photographer, but I've done enough in the past to recognized the photographer wasn't very knowledgeable or might claim he was "looking for an effect."
