I just rewatched an early Sodomania vid, and am not sure that it holds up. I do remember enjoying the Sodomania at the time, though, probably because everything else was so putridly horrible. I can find something I like from every almost every era (I have to work pretty hard for the mid-90s), but in terms of quantity of fun scenes, I point to 2004-2006, when it seemed every vid included Hillary Scott or Jasmine Byrne or Leah Luv or Kat. Instead, you started seeing lots of sleek, straight-haired, "cute" girls, often with small boobs. Yummy. The video quality got much better. And then there for a while, you started seeing occasional random scenes with cute girls peeing. Which I really liked. And then came the flood of squirting movies. Which was great at first. But this increased focus on bodily fluids unfortunately then ushered in the terrrible era of Male Spitting around 2004. This came along with all the choking/gagging/gaping stuff, plus an industry-wide obsession with documenting the male ass, and suddenly most mainstream porn became unwatchable, with 2005-2008 probably ranking among the worst years in the entire history of porn. I haven't seen too much classic porn from the 70s and early 80s. From what I have seen, there seems to be a great sense of fun about it. The attitude toward sex seems to be a bit healthier than today, with both males and females seeming to enjoy themselves. I also find it totally charming that the performers are actually expected to act in those old films. I think the sex is sexier when it's set in some kind of emotional context, rather than just two strangers on a porn set having mechanical intercourse. I think modern porn could use more roleplaying like this. Also, I like the nice full bushes that a lot of the 70s girls were sporting. However, the massive downside to the 70s porn I've seen is that there was waaaay too much camera coverage of the male performers, with lots of camera shots sweeping up hairy male chests, and sudden cutaways to goofy male faces. And male faces were goofier in the 70s than today, due to the prevalence of moustaches. [Link]

Yes, that is when I started watching porn, but there is more to it than that. There was a untamed nature of films where anything and everything was game. This was before the Meese Report on Pornography (He didn't know how to define it but he knew it when he saw it - talk about opening the pandora's box!) so even though it was technically illegal to shoot porn (people could be arrested for pandering and prostitution) and the group that rhymes with the words "schnafia" and "schnob" were involved (wink, wink), the quality of film that was produced set a standard. Granted, this was not Hollywood, but there were scripts, lighting technicians, grips, screenwriters, etc., There were actual scripts and shooting schedules and when the piece was done, it was shown in XXX movie theaters around the world. Deep Throat, by itself, brought in more than $600 million in worldwide ticket, VHS and DVD sales. That certainly compares with todays blockbusters only that is a just a cumualitive total. During this seventh year period, we were treated to such legends as Seka, Annette Haven, Kay Parker, Angel, Ginger Lynn, Amber Lynn, Christy Canyon, Desiree Cousteau, Veronica Hart, Candida Royalle, Juliet "Aunt Peg" Anderson, Marilyn Chambers, Taija Rae, Serena, Candy Samples, Uschi Digard, Kitten Natividad, Little Oral Annie, Samantha Fox, Jessie St. James, Lisa Deleeuw, Rachel Ashley, Barbara Dare, Bambi Woods, Sharon Kane, Erica Boyer, Kari Foxx, Gina Carerra, Kristara Barrington, Rhonda Jo Petty, Constance Money, Stacey Donovan, Loni Sanders, Buffy Davis, Aja, Porsche Lynn, Brooke&Taylor Young, Candi Evas, etc., Every film (and when I say film, I mean FILM, not video) had plot or was a compilation. Actresses were normally featured multiple times in a titles, unlike today's gonzo where you normally get one scene per actress. Plus, taboos like fisting and incest were not yet illegal so the more the merrier. Speaking of which, there were more orgy scenes. Just because porn stars occasionally appear (usually as lampoons of themselves) on mainstream TV and movies doesn't mean the industry is even close to mainstream status. The most mainstream X rated films ever got was probably in c. 1982-3 when the budgets were typically the highest and the production styles were just like Hollywood films (think Chuck Vincent and early Henri Pachard). As for the women, they mostly look like common sluts and street hookers whereas in the past the women in X rated movies looked like real women and were naturally beautiful (i.e, they didn't need plastic surgery and breast implants to look good). I'd be surprised if anyone can find a modern porn star half as attractive as Annette Haven, Kelly Nichols, Seka, Serena, Rene Bond and others. Finally, since its now being viewed in private, by one or two customers at a time, the industry is tailoring its product to individual tastes. The film/Magazine - Playboy -Penthouse - Hustler days of the 70's The VHS years peeked in the late-80's early 90's The DVD years peeked around 2004/05 And I believe we are well into "the Internet years. Of course there is overlap but for me there were peeks and valleys in each era. I always thought that as the "new tech" of the day came up, so did the opportunities to do something that had not been done before. So the $$$ went up and attracted the attention of Girls that would not have been interested in the old formats. Just to set themselves apart. Who knows, I just think its been a fantastic ride, but if I had invested the cash that I put out for all these formats combined thru the years, I could have bought one of those houses that they film porn in nowadays. However, my favorite period is between 2000 and 2004. I do have one beef though about this era. Don't get me wrong, I loved the years from 2003 to 2004, but those years were mostly gonzo related porn. Plus, some of the gonzo from approx. 1998 to 2006 was really overkill in some ways. Several companies have folded since and mostly the true and successful companies have remained. So, that's my only beef with that period in porn. I'm not a big features fan of the last 10 years in porn, but I would like to see a better balance between feature films (good films with time, precision, and great sex with a variety of female talent; not just the playboy/model types that are typically associated with Vivid, DP, and Wicked) and gonzo related porn. Overall today's stuff has the best looking women, the widest selection of whatever "kink" you may be into and there's just more of everything. I look at some of the movies and girls being named here and it just seems like a lot of the posters have selective memory. All the eras they're naming had lots of crappy stuff being made along with the stuff they're saying was great. Yeah, there were good looking women back in those various eras but there were lots of not so hot women in the biz too. I think overall the women of today look better than they ever have.
