With this little device, you can plug in any ordinary SATA drive and output contents directly to any video/TV device. $79 plus the cost of the drive. It even has a HDMI connector. The important thing with these type of players is having a robust catalog of audio and video codecs onboard. As a longtime "collector" of video porn, there are no standards or conventions to follow; you will find all sorts of video codecs mixed with all sorts of audio codecs in all various containers and tags and whatnot. It's the wild west out there. And so far, the manufacturers kinda gloss over such details when they list the specifcations. The "perfect" such device will have the capability to be upgraded by the user. For example the capability to play .flv files should be added. [Link] |

Price aside, the "vague brand" one is much more flexible in that it can connect to more things, input-wise and output-wise. I'd like to do a head-to-head test of both of them, connecting to my external HDD and see which one plays the most video files without choking.

Seagate is now getting into the scene. They introduced their Freeagent portable HD's some time ago along with a nifty little stand that allows you to dock it like an iPod. Gimmicky but it caught a few points here and there for style.
Now they introduce a bigger dock that actually looks like a stereo component. You can find items elsewhere that do all this (and more) for a cheaper price but again I give them some points for style.

It looks cool but the remote control looks awfully cheap. I just had one of the main buttons on the remote that controls a lot of menu functions on my receiver quit working. It's really hard to tell by looking how well a remote will work and how long it'll last but if it looks cheap in the ad that's supposed to impress you enough to make you want to buy it, I don't know.[Link] |

Random, almost the first thing I do with any new device is program my Logitech Harmony remote to handle all commands. Then I promptly pack away the original remote in the box and stash it for the inevitable eBay sale I'll have in 12 months when the next version is released.

Western Digital just released the successor product to their popular WDTV, dubbed the WDTV Live HD. It does everything the WDTV does, has a slightly faster processor and more memory and, most importantly, adds in an ethernet port. This lets it not only find your NAS gear and stream your music/pics/vids from that box but also lets you transfer media from another PC on the network to any hard drive attached to the device. It's a very worthy competitor to the Seagate item I posted earlier. Right now Best Buy is offering it at $119.99.[Link] |

^^ Very nice. I may have to upgrade to this. I already have a network switch right next to my WDTV, for my DVR and Blu-ray player. So, networking this is just a matter of plugging in a cable. I'm already using TVersity with my DirecTV DVR, but the DVR doesn't support "trick play" (fast forward scan, rewind scan, etc...) with video files. So I rarely use it.[Link] |
