Where can I look to find a compatibility list between the various non-US formats and standard US DVD players?

Normally I watch DVDs via the player on my computer (my stand alone one went bad), and I was wondering if the DVD I want to buy will even play on my system...

DVD in question is in French and, if I understood the commentary correctly, in a format called PAL ZONE 2.

Then it won't play on a standard US player.
The video standard for the US is NTSC. To play a disc in the European video standard of PAL you either need a DVD player that will convert it or a television that can accept it. In addition you have an additional problem with the regional coding. The US is region 1 and the players can handle region 0 and region 1 discs. To play a disc that is region 2 you need a region free player.

Sorry I missed part of the post since this deals with a computer it is slightly different, the video standard of PAL doesn't matter on a computer DVD-ROM drive. Your computer can play either and your moniter can display either as well. The regional coding of 2 will probably still be a problem as most ROMs that I have experience with are set for a region. They can be changed, but only limited times before they lock into the last region used.

That is unless you use one of many programs which will unlock the region coding on your DVD-Rom drive, (I use AnyDVD) or unless you get your dvd-rom firmware flashed.

There's a trial version of link to software removed is available.


MOD: Even though this software allows for region code override, it also allows for the circumvention of DVD encryption, which is intended to be used to copy DVD's. As such discussion of this software is not permitted at ADT.

I have 2 DVD plyers.

I've tried three different PAL DVDs in my two DVD players and while they would not play on the Sony SLV-D300P, they did play just fine on the much older Apex AD-500W, so I was quite happy about that.

I don't recall for which zone the PAL DVDs were intended.

Pal is not a zone but a standard in reproducing images

For example Zone 2 is Europe which is PAL and Japan which has NTSC standard.
Australia has PAL standard but is Zone 4
