Frigo Senior Member 1290 Posts 7/02	Posted - Sep 24 2003 : 8:50AM As far as I know all information about which posts I've already read etc are stored in a browser cookie, right? Out of the fact that I check ADT from my home computer and also from work I have 2 different cookies. So I was wondering if it would be possible to store such information on the webserver instead of my computer. I could just my cookie to be logged in automatically and the one on the server for my "read-status" !? [Link]

Wouldn't really be a server resource issue just a bunch of programming time. I like the idea but don't know if I'll be able to get to it any time soon. The cookie only stores the server time when you last visited, not which posts you've read. [Link]

jamesn Senior Member Cambridge, MA 750 Posts 1/04	Posted - Nov 19 2004 : 11:42AM it shouldn't be difficult to make a more intelligent active topics, most of the powerboard-type software lets you do this with no real slowdown with different shades of text. i've also seen some really amatuerish but effective ways of doing this, which work fine given the intuitiveness of light/dark colors thanks to email. i've always found adt more than responsive enough and the only thing i dislike is the screen economy being wasted on excess menus. i had to get rid of the frames, but there's definetly room for even more ads if the top/botton/side were condensed for most popular content and ads then compacted/collapsed. you could easily retain effective banners and lop off the bottom or squeeze the top/left if the left column were made simpler. The server keeps track of every thread each user reads and when they read it. Also, this site is not designed to be beholden to ads or ad placement. We have never used frames. More complex navigation and fancy collapsing sections would be nice (we actually had that at one point about three years ago) would be great for more web-savvy users but the vast majority of people visiting this site wouldn't know how to get around. However it's not a button it's a text link. On the main forum page it reads &quotall topics read in all forums" and in each forum it reads &quotall topics read in this forum". These links are only available if you're logged in. [Link]
