Hi! Never posted on here before. Hopefully people will be kind to me. I certainly will try my best to be kind in return.
So, brief update. I left the law firm of Orenstein, Armstrong and Daniels a few months back and have been in a strange nesting period ever since. Some of the people over there feel that I "got what I deserved" by being released from such a prestigious law-firm, and I certainly agree.
Because what I "got" and "what I deserved" was Freedom and that is all anyone can ask for from this life, I believe.
Whittle with me for a moment, won'tcha? Grab a swiss army knife and a whip of kindling and let's scrape away the bark and first few layers of wood and find what the core essence of the piece actually is.
The one that you can't see from the surface. The one that requires effort to see.
The core of the piece, as far as I can tell, is freedom, which is what a good pornographer stands for.
Period.
I'm not saying you have to stand for freedom just as I'm saying you don't have to be a good pornographer.
I'm just here to remind you that, beneath the bark of money and the pulp of fame, lies the actual thing you are looking for.
Your freedom.
Freedom from . . . what exactly? In porn terms, it's all about freedom to say and do what you want. Yes? This goes farther than just being able to click on a clip you like and not get busted out (which does have it's own appeal, I admit) and called a pervert. Saying what you want and doing what you want are the most important things you can do, not only for yourself, but for the rest of the world at large.
If you have the courage, you will inspire others to follow, and then the world as a whole can be as free as you are.
What determines freedom? What enables it?
Scumbags like me.
Because if the scumbags can say and do what they want (short of hurting people) then everyone can.
But if a scumbag isn't free, if he's beholden to the opinions of banks and law-firms, if he has to tow a company line that he thinks is wrong and does it anyway, then he is a prisoner.
I'm free now and happy for it.
And as far as not being able to make features with big budgets, that's fine too. Most of the time, you're just paying for people and things that you don't really need anyway.
Imagination is the only thing you really need to tell a story.
And mine's free of charge, thank God.
Finally.
Hope you all are well. I'll follow this thread and see if it goes anywhere. If not, then just do one thing for Papa Shmavid, and one thing only.
Be Free.
Love,
David Stanley the Porn Director

Aloha!
Um . . . well, that depends. I've been laying low for awhile after a very sad break-up and haven't really been giving the job-hunt thing my Boy Scout Best, but that is changing.
I have talked to a few companies, but not any that are doing features, besides one company (who I can't name) who I'd absolutely LOVE to shoot for, if they'll have me.
In the meantime, I still have a movie I did called "The Last Rose" coming out via Weaked (sp?) and I'll be touring the country doing my one man transvestite/bestiality show "Little Horse N' Annie".
Speaking of which, you can catch me at "Guffaw's" out on Route 9, just east of the Jersey Turnpike, this Sunday at 7:38 AM.
(Not so serious.)
The long and short? I want to return to doing features. I just don't know if adult is going to keep making them, what with all the handy-dandy-ness of our new click-a-clip porno world.
I sure hope so, though.
I'm just gettin' warmed up!

Welcome to ADT, David!
You have quite a few fans and admirers here who would love to ask you questions, share their impressions of your work, and generally learn more about your ideas and creative process.
Here's a toast to your very own first thread:

You rule. Thank you for saying that! I'd love to answer any and all questions, and will answer them thoroughly and truthfully. I have nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of.
It's a horrible world when the pornographers feel shame because then no one is safe from that most worthless of feelings.
So ask away!
Happy to be here.

Hey David , I love your movies. I particularly like the ones that are really out there(like Voodoo talking to his pants). You also always do a good job shooting the sex. I would love o see you replace PT at Vivid.

I knew David Stanley was different from any one else in the biz when I was witness to a gorilla named "Big Baloney Sandwich" in one of his movies.
Welcome to ADT. It's been many years my friend. Hopefully you remember me and congratulations for still being in possession of your soul.

Hey M!
Of course I remember you. You're one of the good ones, man.
One time you pretended to be Ron Vogel as a glass of water. How could I ever forget that?
By far, the funniest man I've ever personally known. You are.
Why are we still in this crazy business, after all these years?
And why is this business getting so . . . weak and frightened?
Maybe you can answer these questions for me. I've been in a bubble for 13 years in the biz and I know you've been at it at least as long.
Man. How time trains.

To Fingerbanger . . . thank you for the kind words! I love that someone actually saw that movie where Voodoo talks to his pants. That synopsis was the best thing I ever turned in to Vivid. "A guy is afraid to leave his house because he thinks his pants have parties . . . and they do."
"Wet Nurse" is the name of it. I was let go from Vulvid before I had a chance to edit it, so I'm glad it turned out okay.
As far as replacing PT, there is not replacement for that wonderful guy. Nothing against what you said . . . if he's as frustrated with the way features are being demolished as I am, then I'd be honored to take his post, if it was okay with him.
I love the guy. He was my mentor for 2 years in the business and helped me get my first directing jobs ever, starting at Elegant Angel and then moving on to Vivid.
I just say that to clarify. I do dig the dude, though I haven't seen any of his movies for quite some time.

Hi David, I loved your work with Julia ann. She has since left wicked also. Is their any chance of you two working together again? She is now doing the gonzo circuit. Do you think we will see a wilder Julia ann post wicked? Were they holding her back?
thanks

Hey Savoy and Juha!
I'm so absolutely flattered by your kind words. I wish I could say I was still going to be making features, but I don't see that happening anymore.
I still have a couple of movies coming out that I like a lot and I hope you do, too.
Having fans like you guys (and everyone else here at Adult Dvd Talk who digs me and my weird eyesight) has made the last 13 years of my career worth it.

Hey Cholezoe!
Yeah, I love Julia Ann, too! She and Stephanie Swift were my two favorite actresses ever to work for Weekend Punctures.
I miss her. But I don't think I'll be shooting her anymore, since my career is pretty much over in porn.
I wish her luck, though! And certainly hope she can find a happier place to hang her hat than gonzo.
Nothing against "the gonz", but as good as an actress as she is, and as good-hearted as a person as she is, it's sad to me to see her doing less than she should be doing.

David, I really think you could inject something very necessary into the "gonzo" realm. Everything is stale, repetitive and uninspired and has been for a long time. People who click on 2 minute free clips and whack off will never buy full length porn anyways but maybe they would if it wasn't all exactly the same. Find your muse again my friend. You may well rise like a phoenix from the feature ashes and cause us to all step up our game.

I would love to see you direct vignette porn in which the set-ups were integral, fresh, and fully realized. My favorite among your films is "1,000 Words" because it's stylized and spare -- vignette-like (to me) despite the through-story.

Mike . . . thank you! Those are just about the kindest words anyone's said to me throughout my recent rough spell. I have a few other friends who have been extremely kind, but never a fellow Director such as yourself.
Makes me feel like LA could be a good place to stay. Whether I will be staying in this city or not is a plate endlessly spinning at the present time. I'm flat-broke, facing bankruptcy, about to move to the Midwest, Love of my Life gone after a painfully beautiful live-in relationship, and on and on and . . .

Hola to my Friends here asking why I said my career is kinda kaput.
Don't be sad, though! I'm gonna be okay. Things have been particularly rough for me over the past few months. I noted some of it in that post I just sent to Mike, before I saw you guys asking your very much appreciated questions.
The essence of the reason that finds me setting up an escape route for higher ground - meaning, leaving LA and Porn behind for good - is that I'm flat broke.
No pot nor even the piss to fill it, (if I had one, sigh.)
But my Heart is whole and my Soul is swimming in lovely, lovely freedom and Life is Beautiful and Worth Living, so I am going with the flow and seeing where my life takes me next.
I've been doing this gig for a long time. A long time. 13 years. I've been directing movies since I was about Sasha Grey's age and I'm now 37. Granted, that's 37 in Chinchilla years, but no matter.
Focus, David . . . Focus . . .
In the four months since I was fired from Wicked for something that was a)stupid of me and b)wasn't anything violent or awful as has been spoken of me a few months past on this very forum (breaking my heart when I finally read it 2 days ago. I always thought Stormy was really cool. Couldn't figure out why she'd attack me like that. The phone stopped ringing after she did. Seriously. But I only wish her the best. Her movies are great. She was the only other director there whose work I actually liked) -
In those four months I have made not a penny nor a gilder on anything except the selling of my HD Camera and Lighting Kit on Craigslist. My ex-Girlfriend (a Woman I will never not Love for she is so very truly lovely) was selling her gorgeous clothes and I was selling my beloved DVD collection so we could pay bills and buy food. For awhile, we couldn't eat at all. It was strange; having money (Wicked paid me well) and then not having money (I'm dumb with debt, big tipper, etc) was a shock; a shock that our World is becoming more and more familiar with nowadays.
Shorthand: Times Are Tough.
Yet we endure and that is what makes us great.
I have a quote that I Love. One that rolls in my brain on endless, happy loops late at night, when I'm scared to go to sleep and not eat (I've lost 25 pounds. Thinkin' of writin' a diet book "Get Shamed by a Company You Loved Working For and Lose Your Flab!" No, that's too long a title. Think Shmavid, think!)
Shorthand: The Quote Is . . .
"I make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes."
I would like to keep making my strange little movies. I am a certainly a joy-filled man when I am making them.
That's something I don't get. How anyone could say I was mean to my crew? WTF? Never. Ever. Never.
I Loved them. They showed me what my thoughts looked like.
I'm crying as I write that. I don't give a shit. I want you to know.
They were my friends.
I hate it when people who don't know me at all say things that remind me of what an absolute fuck-up I am when it comes to having friends who Love me.
I hate it when people who don't know me at all say things like that because they break a beautiful spell that I hold in myself when I am alone, which seems like all the time now . . .
I hate it because it hurts to be this alone at this age with no future.
And neither the pot.
I'm sorry to everyone at Wicked if I offended any of you. I Loved working there. I Loved that you let me get away with so much fun stuff. I loved that you let me play artist and I loved thinking of you as people I could talk to.
This business is so strange . . . to be alone in it, so painful and so damaging (at least it's been to me) . . . it always made me feel so good that I knew people who understood why that was the case.
You simply miscast me in the wrong play, is all. I never belonged there. I didn't. I am a strange artist. I do have a weird way of saying things. It's just the only way I know how. I don't say it's the best way. I don't.
I just do it because it takes my mind away from me.
Where I get hurt a lot.
I Love You All.
Non-exclusive.
Peace.
(See "Pineapple Express" and look for Stormy. I hear she's great in it.)

Danke Schoen, Merci, Thank You.
David
PS - Sorry so sorrowful. Like I said, I'll be okay. I want to build things up.
I've spent a long time making good things out of, what some consider to be, bad things but I've spent an equal amount of time making bad things out of good things.
All I want is to be able to make good things out of good things and maybe even make them great.

I'm sorry to hear about your current situation, hopefully things will get better in the short run for you instead of taking a while. I hope that you manage to continue making features, porn needs quirky projects and there aren't many directors out there making them. I'm sure that you have already thought of this but Adam & Eve and Digital Playground have nice feature movie divisions. Another company named Pulpo I could see you fitting in with but they don't release many titles. A couple of years ago I would have recommended VCA but they have taken a nose dive since LFP bought them. If you can't do features again for a while I hope that you can at least do vignette movies. I'd hate to see you go into gonzo/all sex titles as I've seen that genre ruin feature directors that I enjoyed like Thomas Zupko.

Oh the poor tortured soul that is David Stanley...And for ONCE, I am not meaning for that to be dripping with sarcasm. It is truly how I feel. David, re-read my post. I say glowing things about you...probably more compliments than I have given anyone. You are painfully talented and much respected as an unabashed artist. Unfortunately, you are also your worst enemy...completely flawed in your judgment. I sat back and helplessly watched you self destruct everything you worked for....seemingly on purpose. I assumed you had some higher plan that none of us knew of and you would soon be laughing at us all. I thought there was no way a man this intelligent and gifted would be making the mistakes...unless they are not mistakes at all, but carefully calculated chess moves. I guess I was wrong....My issue only began when you attacked Wicked and allowed others to do so as well. It goes above biting the hand that feeds you. At the heart of Wicked pictures (for as flawed as you may believe the company may be) is a man who truly cared for you (and his other contracted employees). This is something rare in our industry as you must know. Sorry for what you believe was a personal attack on you. It was more of a protective reflex for a man and company that I consider family. I wish you success, but most importantly the happiness and peace I have watched you yearn for in the few years I have had the extreme pleasure of studying you. Good luck!
Sincerely,

David, I haven't watched a porn movie in a long time, but based on your posts here (and Savoy's love for you) I'd watch one of yours. Don't give up on the porn industry. There are plenty of collectors, not just 30 second masturbators. It will never be all clips.

Stormy,
Thanks for the kind, kind words. So, since I have a chance to put something on the record, I never had a master plan at all. I was just doing my thing, trying to show how I saw this world.
I never meant to bite the hand that fed me, either. It was never about that. I always spoke well of Wicked when asked. On the few occasions I gave myself to do press, I always spoke extremely highly of Wicked. Even when they fired me. So I'm not quite sure how to respond to that other than to say, when I'm "doing my thing", I'm not really thinking about anything but that; about the movies I'm making.
I can't say I liked the fact that my movies were on the bottom rung of the production schedule, or that the crew - once I would get to work with them - would be so burned out by previous shoots that by the time they got to mine, they seemed totally wiped out. That's why I never yelled or badgered.
I think the misunderstanding you had about me is that you thought I was always making fun of everything. Like I was some cool "hepcat" who thought he was better than anyone. Truth is, I'm an insecure kid from the Midwest who's never really had friends or lovers, whose spent most of his life reading in bed, wishing he could have friends and wishing he could be accepted by a world that never quite understood me.
Nothing's changed, really. I'm still that kid. Still the outcast. Still the one that no one understands.
And when people don't understand things, they make assumptions either based on fear or love, depending on the depths and availability of their compassion.
I felt that Wicked - especially SK - made extreme assumptions about me that were unfair and untrue and, hence, made me out to be something that I was not; some sort of rabble-rouser.
These assumptions were backed up by the movies I made, which were hard to understand for a lot of the people over there, which is understandable. My stuff isn't for everyone.
And if there's a point to my work, it's that it isn't for everyone.
It's just me doing my thing, trying to make the best things that I can make versus following what may (or may not) be a better, more established business model.
They weren't meant to make fun of the actors, either. I know you thought that and that's what kept you from working with me, which always made me sad since I always thought that would have been so much fun to work together. But that's okay. Just reading your nice words above make me feel as good about you as I always did. You're a cool chick, SD. And you deserve your success.
I don't. But I loved the movies I did. They meant the world to me. They were the only things that made me feel like I was okay, like I had a voice. Like I wasn't just howling into the void. Like I was doing something that maybe gave the porn audience something they weren't expecting.
The movies were weird because I see the world in a weird way; in a way that is always in flux, in battle with it's various natures.
I see the world as a dynamic organism. Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it's scary. Sometimes it's vile. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense.
And I'd like to make it make sense, at least to me. And that's what the movies were for.
But what I loved the most about the movies I did was that - no matter how dark or weird they got - they always ended by saying that everything was gonna be okay.
They had happy endings, because I don't.
Peace,
David

This whole thread makes me really sad.
Stormy is my favourite busty blonde.
I've enjoyed her performances for many years.
And she's evolved into a great director, perhaps the second greatest female porn director of all time (Veronica Hart is the greatest of course).
But David Stanley's work is so genuine, so different than anything else ever being captured on film.
Why is there no place for a small arthouse porn division in this big big company Wicked?
What has he done that Wicked fired him and that no other company hires him?
In my opinion the main problem is that he made Stanley-films while all the other Wicked-directors first and foremost make Wicked-films.
It's like in the Golden Age of Hollywood.
A director can develop a personal signature.
But the company's image is the limit.

well said. and for the record, i didn't do anything that bad. what i did was embarrassing more than anything. embarrassing and stupid, but it wasn't done to spite wicked one bit. i wish i could say what it was, but it wasn't violent, it wasn't stealing, it wasn't drugs, it wasn't non-consensual . . . it was just bad taste and gross on my part.
I engaged in a consensual act that one should normally engage of behind closed doors (which I thought were) and my crew saw it.
This was the tipping point that pushed Wicked's hand. It was also the culmination of a very unhealthy working relationship that I had with their general manager, a man who thought I was the devil incarnate from the moment I walked in, and who was gunning for me.
But I don't hate him. He's simply doing what he thought his job was.
The only thing I can say is that - what I did - wasn't meant for Wicked to take so personally. I didn't mean it that way. I was just being a stupid porn director and I hadn't slept in 4 days and was killing myself to try and make a good movie without my normal DP and lighting guy and so forth.
Like I've said before and I'll say again, I loved working for Wicked and I always wanted to fit in, but I just couldn't.
That's the real reason they let me go. I just didn't fit in there and we both knew it. They hired me as long as they could, but, as the feature market got scarier and scarier, I don't think they could warrant keeping someone around that they a)didn't understand and b)wasn't making the kinds of movies that the other directors were making (no offense to them.)
I don't hate Wicked for firing me. I love them for letting me work there at all. With the exception of my unhealthy relationship with the general manager (not steve o, who I admire greatly to this day), I really liked everyone there a lot.
The whole thing breaks my heart too. I spent 13 years wanting to earn a place for myself in this strange business only to be run out of town on a rail. It sucks.
I'm about to declare bankruptcy for the second time in my life. Ain't fun.
Thanks for the kind words.
Love and Peace,
David

Hello David,
It's an honor to see you on this board. I'd like to ask you a few questions if that is all right with you. Which films of yours that you're very proud of, for I would like to check them out since I haven't seen your works before.
What are your favorite mainstream films? Hope that I don't annoy you with those questions because to me, it seems that you're rather hold in high regards among serious fans of feature porn.
I'm sincerely sorry to hear that you were let go by Wicked and you weren't able to live well, due to difficulty. I hope you will be okay, Mr. Stanley. It's shame that there are so precious few artists left in industry and it would be wonderful if you can continue but alas, it wasn't meant to be.
I hope you can rise up again someday, coming out with lot of cool feature flicks with vengeance. :)

Well Hello Shogun!
Alright then. Down to brass tacks, are we?
Well then without further ado . . .
1. The movies I've made that I am the proudest of. Before I get into that, I want to note that today was a historical day for yours truly. Oh yes indeed. For today was the first day I "officially" know exactly how many features I done writ n' dee-rek-ted over this past 13 years, hither and yon.
89
That's a nice number. I don't know if it counts "THE LAST ROSE", my last movie, which I mention because it's my
Number 1 Pick.
Other than that, I don't think my grey-haired head could organize an algorithm of such complexity, ferocity and nuance as would be required of giving the movies any kind of numerical evaluation.
That bein' said, I'll just give you the rest of the list in a kind of smorgasboard fashion.
Here ye be. My favorite MyMovies.
wet nurse (because it's about a guy who's afraid to leave his house because he thinks his pants have parties and they do.)
prettygirl (because I used to be in love with Ashley Blue and she is the beating heart of that lovely piece)
melt (because I love the other worlds that glide ever so gently just a candle flicker away from ours)
crescendo:2012 (because it's the most positive movie in the world. it says the end of the world is the best part.
1000 words (because no one says a word as it should be if you understand film grammar. with this i think i did.)
viewer discretion (it was an idea i had for years about a TV channel run amok by smut and it reminds me of SCTV.)
turnabout (this was my second feature. that it worked was good, considering my first feature didn't.)
highway (because dasha and dillon met on this part of my bonnie and clyde-inspired, 16mm western/fuckflick mashup)
highway part 2 (and fell in love on this part. also, i got to direct an old Romanian woman in a gunfight with a megaphone.)
20 candles (because Kira used to be so beautiful and funny and cool, like she was on this sweet lil' jingle)
faraway (again, didn't star a contract girl. made for Vivid. it starred my friend Meghan Mayhem, Myself and Evan Stone.)
good things (because it was about 9/11 and it was made in february 2002 and it meant well and delivered a nice note)
sweet things (i miss 16mm. i loved shooting in the format of some of my favorite movies. tbd . . .)
carmen goes south (because even I think it's funny)
mouth (i hate the music, but i love the movie. eric is a genius that few people are fully aware of.)
lady of the evening (randy is a comic genius and i miss him)
rapture in blue (because it starts with randy getting his taint waxed and screaming over the freeze frame)
afterglow (it's so insane. so-so frickin' insane. that was back when i REALLY did what ever I wanted. My Schizopolis)
loveless (because I made some of the music for it and because I love Lezley Zen and it's named for an MBV record.)
rendezvous (put randy spears in top form with carmen hart at her early career best, then blend pour and chuckle)
just like that (it convinced me that francois was the genius that he is. i miss him, too.)
harlequin (because it showed how absolutely fucking genius Evan Stone is as a serious actor. Like all good comics.)
polarity (because it was dark as a dead fish's eye)
all about keri (because it was funny, sweet and had natural lighting)
the most beautiful girl in the world (because I used to love Ashley Blue)
and
adore (ori won an oscar)
i know that's all kinda hard to read. or is it? i hope it isn't. i wrote as fast i could so that only the first few things that popped into my head, well . . .
Oh jeez! Wait! What's that sound?
Is that the . . . oh, shit. Okay.
Whew, that was close!
Now.
Where were we?
Oh, yes.

QUESTION NUMBER TWO
My favorite mainstream movies in order.
(I love this question so much I think I just peed myself a little bit. Seriously. It's okay. I'm fine. Don't fret.)
A Clockwork Orange
It was the only movie my otherwise permissive Mother wouldn't let me see. When I saw it, I felt like I was getting away with something. My Dad saw it in a porno theater in Florida in the early 70's. Maybe that part of the story made it feel like getting away with porno. Could that have lead to anything?
Oh, and Stanley Kubrick is a genius and it's shot with natural light and Malcolm McDowell made me wanna be a bad guy who was smart.
Which I am.
Blue Velvet
I fell in love with my "first true love" back in high school, seeing this in a theater in 1986. The movie was so perverse and so beautiful at the same time. So filled with nostalgia for a time that would never happen again, even though it was set in it's own day. My girlfriend and I walked out of the theater in love and speaking a different language because of the film. The last image of a bird holding a bug in it's beak lingers with me still as do my feelings for my first true love because you never forget those do you?
Blade Runner
I bought this on CED Videodisc - an old media format that played movies like vinyl records rather than cd's - and I watched it repeatedly for days on end when I was 13 going on 14.
It was the first movie I ever watched stoned, too. The first time I ever was stoned.
And because it is so beautiful and so original and so sad and I cry fucking time, whether I want to or not, when Rutger Hauer does his "tears in rain" speech. Oh my God.
Mr. Scott, they don't call you "the guvnor" for nothing.
Days of Heaven
I saw Terrence Malick walking his dog down in Austin once, back when I lived there, and it was an image as if from one of his films. He was standing by the river's edge, dappled in the warm and high Texas sunlight as it came through a willow tree. His dog was lapping at the river and he was holding the leash; a silhouette upon shimmering water.
I love all of his movies, but Days of Heaven clings to me the sweetest. I was turned on to it in film school, back when I was devouring film like they were pudding. Days of Heaven - with it's sweeping cinematography (mostly shot by a man who was blind), haunting naturalist score and poetically detached narration - was a meal of endless delights which I savor still.
The Shining
It is the scariest movie ever made. Stephen King said that he thought Kubrick wanted to "physically hurt the audience with a film" and I think that's exactly what he did with his adaptation of King's wonderful book.
The look of the film is as iconic as anything, but it was the story and characters that drew me in when I first saw it. I was 12. My family was at my Grandparent's house for dinner. It was snowing out. Minnesota and Cold.
Away from the grown-ups, I stole into my Grandpa's TV room and watched the film on a Sony Trinitron, topped with a bunny ear antenna, back when things like that existed.
"Welcome back to the ABC Saturday Night Movie. Tonight we present Jack Nicholson in 'The Shining.'"
"Viewer Discretion is Advised."
I don't remember anything after that.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Part 2
The first one, because it looks like it really is happening and it pretty much was.
The sequel, because it's so fucking funny and so crazy and in high school we watched it for about 2 years straight.
In the Mood for Love
Because I fell in love with Alejandra and I knew it watching Wong Kar Wai's most gorgeous film to date (imho.)
I knew it because I recognized the spell he was casting. This melancholy spell. This beautiful meditation on what it means to love someone you can never be with.
Which is exactly what happened.
No Country for Old Men
Because it is a true modern classic. It will stand the test of time. I will bet on it.
Better than betting on a coin toss.
Adaptation
Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman cemented their genius with it. It's so amazing. So beautiful. So funny and fractured and bold and self-aware without ever once being cloying or sickening. I love the heart of it. I love how awkward Nicolas Cage is (who's brilliant) and how he nails playing the twins, especially in the death scene. A work of art.
The Mist
I don't count "The Shining" as a true Stephen King adaptation since King hates the movie, so I feel comfortable saying that "The Mist" is my favorite King adaptation to film ever-ever-ever.
I also love "1408" and would put it on par with this.
The ending is the meanest fucking thing in the world.
I love the balls. Frank Darabont is a man I tip my teacup to.
Oh, and poor, poor Norm. One of the most disturbing deaths ever-ever-ever-ever.
Stupid kid.
The Third Man
Forget the Zither music. Forget about the dutch angles and the bombed-out Vienna architecture. Forget Welles for a minute (but not a second more) and even forget about Carol Reed. Instead, think about Joseph Cotten.
Yes, swim in the Cotten-y goodness. Revel in it. It's yours to keep.
That movie works as well as it does because of him. It is a movie about a man who kills his best friend and has no idea that that is what he's going to do and Cotten NAILS it.
Okay. Minute's up. Remember Orson and think about cuckoo clocks and you'll eventual untangle the world's greatest piece of improvised dialogue ever.
And it's gorgeous and I love the Zither music and the setting and the wacked out way it was shot and everything Carol Reed did, too.
There isn't a single moment of the movie that isn't entertaining and it ends like hell.
Pierrot Le Fou
Because it's about hell - in the form of random violence, mod Paris parties and it ends like heaven.
Oh, and it lets Sam Fuller explain cinema.
"EMOTION."
American Beauty
Because I love it when Wes Bentley says "Sometimes I feel like my heart is gonna burst." And I love it when Kevin Spacey describes his Grandmother's hands being "like paper." And I love the last line.
If you haven't seen the movie, I won't give it away. But . . .
Don't worry.
You will.
INLAND EMPIRE
I don't know how one of David Lynch's best movies also happens to be his toughest to narratively navigate but it's true.
I saw this at the Cinerama Dome at the AFI fest. Ally and I sat third row center.
It blew my mind.
"It's alright, Honey. You just dyin' is all."
The shot of the man in the clown mask is the scariest shot I've ever seen. And on that giant screen, it literally stopped my heart. I had hallucinations for the next five minutes in the theater from the shock.
David Lynch is a beautiful man.
Slacker
And so's Richard Linklater, or "Rick" as everyone in Austin calls him. Even the marquees.
It inspired everyone in my world to want to make movies back in the early 1990's and a lot of us did. I made a feature with a less-than Slacker's 23,000 budget and Linklater's film was certainly an inspiration; for tenacity if not story.
For "Slacker" doesn't really have a story. It's a La Ronde; a story that passes like a baton from one character to the next.
That kinda shit's exciting as fuck when you're a 22 year old film freak with a stack of 16mm short ends and a borrowed camera and nagra.
I can watch it pretty much anytime and it feels like being with friends.
Do the Right Thing
I got into a car accident when I was 19, in the Summer of '89, with my girlfriend on our way to go see this at the Maplewood Mall.
She and I had blood on our faces when we bought our tickets and went into the theater.
I didn't notice. The movie changed the way I wanted to make films. Spike Lee made me believe, not only in what he was so expertly saying, but in HOW he said it. His style - this vibrant, art-pop mishmash of all the filmmakers that he likes from Martin Scorcese and Jonathan Demme to Sydney Lumet and Oliver Stone and many, many others - makes the film feel less like a time capsule of it's era than as a time capsule of Spike Lee's passion and love of film.
That's the thing that no one ever talks about when they talk about Spike Lee. That he LOVES film just as much as Scorcese, which - in his best films like this and Malcolm X - pays off when applied to urgent and important material.
For as entertaining as Do the Right Thing is, it's ten times as powerful. It's about the truth of racism. Racism sizzles through the film on its way towards a powder keg ending.
Everything in the film is sweating and steaming and ready to boil and when it goes over it's hard to watch.
So you forget how much fun you were having and you realize that now you're watching the movie that Lee needs you to see and not just the one he wants you to.
When it came out, people were afraid it would start riots.
Gummo
I saw this at the Laemmle 5 on Sunset when it opened. There were 6 other people in the theater besides me. Most of them walked out. Someone left their cell phone and it was a big cell phone.
It grabbed a feeling about the Midwest/South that only people who've lived there know. The feeling you get from being in a house with cockroaches behind the paintings and bacon taped to the wall.
I love Harmony Korine and I love that he kicked drugs and is still around. I want to see him grow old for how much I loved him when he was young.
And I love it when the brothers fight and the girl knows she's gonna die and the slow motion shot of chloe sevigny with black electrical tape on her nipples and the way that Linda Manz dances to Madonna.
And the bacon on the wall. And the bacon on the wall.

All for now. I have to pee . . .
TO BE CONTINUED!
Love,
David

the script I wrote for PT's "Awakening" and the short script I wrote for his anthology movie and the script for "secret party" and "debbie does iowa" and "debbie does new orleans" and "Marisa."

Thank you so much for answering my questions. You have no idea how much I truly appreciated it. It's delightful to read your response, which is very entertaining to read.
I'll be buying some of your stuff later this week so I'm looking foward to them. Should be fun viewing.
As for your favorite mainstream films, you have an excellent tastes since you present such eclectic list with such diverse films. It's great to see that list.
I'm surprised to see In the Mood for Love and The Third Man on your list but they're such great films with wonderful cast and fantastic cinematography.
Haven't seen Slacker and Do the Right Thing but will rent them. :)
Thanks, David! 8-)

I was thinking the same thing Steph. What an articulate writer. I wish I could write like that in my blog.

This is weird. I was just asking the Kane Army what had happened to the Unicorn, and if his prolific blogging was ever returning to myspace. I'm thrilled to see you resurface here on ADT David. Your movies are, in a word, spectacular. I've always been of the opinion that your movies were a little overambitious for an industry so focused on the bottom line [ and particulary focused on it these days ]. One could argue that the art occasionally overshadowed the eroticism, but as has already been pointed out, what attracts a particular viewer to a particular director is largely a matter of personal taste. You were always a personal favorite of mine, but I just happen to share your visual aesthetic, and a few of your fetishes.
I have absolutely no doubt that you'll eventually find a more suitable outlet for your creative energy, as well as the means for a comfortable living. Even if we lose you to the land of a 1000 lakes, I hope you never abandon film. It's truly your medium.

Wow you guys are so much nicer than the people who used to pay me.
Starting to feel rich again . . . no kidding.
Reminds me of a funny story from when I used to work for weeeked (which is how carmen, God bless her, always pronounced wicked, and which everyone made fun of her for.)
After I turned in my second script, for "All About Keri", I had a meeting with one of the honchos over there and she proceeded to, politely, sit me down and start giving me lists of screenwriting books that I should read to fix my writing, which she felt wasn't very good. Especially my dialogue.
I sat and smiled (politely) and nodded and agreed that I wasn't a very good writer and that I would race out and pick up those books immediately.
Of course I didn't. I was too busy writing something in my own mind as I left her office.
Which was . . . "Those who can't do, teach."
So thank you for making me feel like I'm not a teacher.
And thank you for reading these things I say.
They are always open and honest and painful and real and I don't know any other way so there you go.
Fuck corporate porn.
A luta continua.
With Heart,

no offense to teachers. my Mom's one.
of course, like me, she's an anarchist teacher of revisionist history who goes her own way/fuck the torpedos.
all offense to those who try and diminish the good lights we have in us, so they can whittle us down to more manageable morsels to chew on.
fuck being understood by banality.
where's the wealth in that?

To clarify for everyone other than David, David and I have never met. We probably never will, and that's probably for the best. I don't think we'd get along. Our personalities are just light-years apart.
David-
I find it interesting that you say you would accept work in gonzo, yet you said that you wished that someone like Julia Ann is doing something beneath her. If you're just talking about the lack of acting, I get it, but do you think gonzo would be beneath you?
I'm also confused that you say that you have no ill feeling towards Wicked, yet your use of 'Weaked' and 'Weekend Punctures' sounds less than respectful and almost like a different person (with a different maturity level) speaking than the guy in the later posts who talks about how much he loved working for Wicked Pictures.
Maybe you've already given this some thought, but I imagine if I owned a company where I financed movies for directors and I happened to like your movies, I'd still be nervous about taking you on after observing how things went down between you and Wicked.
I wish you luck, because all artists are happier when making their art. But when that art takes money to create, sometimes those artists might need a manager to help them get along with the people who write the checks. Just my opinion.

Tricia, it's called bi-polar. I am not a doctor, but I know crazy. Trust me, it takes one to know one and I am a certifiable nutjob :)

"The Truth Is Multi-Faceted" - Stanley Kubrick
That explain it?
(I'm not bi-polar, btw. Sorry, SD. I do have OCD, though, if that makes you feel any better. Oh, and when I was a child, I had epilepsy. But no on the bi-polar thing, which . . . is a pretty serious accusation that I would never casually accuse someone of without hard facts, if I may be so bold as to defend myself against false diagnoses. And I don't think you're a nutjob. I just think you're smart.)
To further explain to Tricia and her odd interest in commenting on me in negative ways, I write constantly and always do it from whatever emotional space I'm in at the time. Sometimes I hate porn. Sometimes I love it.
But you did bust me on how much I truly fucking hate gonzo and everyone involved in it.
You got me there. I would love to watch that whole industry burn to the fucking ground. I think it polluted our industry in a way that it will never recover from and I also think that the entire "genre", if it can be called one, is shittier than a Scottish toilet.
I've been in this business for 13 years and I've witnessed many changes in that time. Some good. Some bad. Gonzo falls in the latter.
Let it burn.
As far as my conflicting feelings on Wicked, well . . . they are a complicated bunch of neurons and synaptic responses, I'll give you that.
I don't hate them for firing me. I love them for hiring me and letting me make so many groovy movies.
But I am conflicted on that topic, yes. It is hard not to be when you're staring at an empty refrigerator and you're starving and you can't pay your bills and you've lost everything in your life that you've worked for, for 13 years.
Take care, Tricia. I hope that fills your interest in all things pertaining to me, who as you've said a few times now, "you've never met."
Rest assured that that will remain true if that makes you rest assured.
Peace,
David

It's not like I haven't been standing right next to you at porn awards events before. We've chosen not to meet, and yea... let's keep it that way.
My view of you is mostly from what I've seen you write at places like XCritic and now here, and from stories from friends who have worked with you. I don't trust people who seem to have views and opinions that change from minute to minute. I also really dislike artsy people who act like the kind of porn that they make is the only good kind.
You can choose to think that gonzo is a blight on the true auteurs of pornography. I could think that people who make incoherent movies that have nothing to do with sex are a blight on the true essense of porn.
Guess what? Neither of us would be right. They're just opinions based on personal taste. Except only one of us acts arrogant about it.
Enjoy your porn and I'll enjoy mine.

I can't agree with you on that and I am a huge fan of features. There have been some excellent gonzo movies over the years and some of the camera work style utilized in this genre of movie has been used in features which have added to the sex scenes in them.

John, I think you may be talking about all sex films and not the specific genre of gonzo. Of course David Stanley might be too. The gonzo style can also be completely integrated into features as well as displayed by John Stagliano in The Adventures of Buttman.
I don't think that there are any bad genres of porn. There are many examples of bad porn from all genres though.
