Walter, Walter, Walter... I think you are being WAY too picky. (Not that I would belive that possible of you!) :)
Plot: Romeo & Juliet - doesn't matter if the forbidden love is told in new way as the daughter of a pornograher and the son of an attorney or it is a black son in 1950's America with a white daughter in 1950's America or it is a Greek daughter marrying a non-Greek son.
Three different stories - three different movies (ok, one was a TV show.. but you know what I mean). All the same plot.
Plot: against all odds the underdog hero wins the day (how many movie examples do you want me to list???)
The plot is old. We know how it will start, we know how it will end. We just watch the middle to still feel like the it was worth our time to get to an end we already know.
Movies are wonderful. I love movies. I am just suggesting that many movies have a tried and true plot, they are just telling in a new way.
Okay, porn is probably more limited than mainstream cinema. Not sure what that point has to do with anything. But, porn has the same problem - there is only so many ways to "do sex". You are left to themes, costumes, locations, talent, technical ability, and cinematic style to set yourself apart. Right?
Of course there is a diversity in in tastes among women. Surely nobody would assume that all women had the same preferences, or that they could be lumped together.
Still, some movies are more of a turn-on for women in general than others.

That would be incorrect. The expression "told in (a) new way" can only be related to plot, not to story, while the "forbidden love" is the story, not the plot. In fact, what you describe here are 3 different (but indeed related) stories, with 3 different plots (although the plot patterns are more likely than not very similar). Here is an example where basically the same story is told in 4 different plots: the 4 Gospels of the New Testament. Another example. Consider these two "narratives":
- He loved her, but she cheated on him. So he killed her. - He killed her, despite the fact that he loved her. She was cheating on him.
In fact, the same story is told here, but in a "different way". IOW, same story, different plots. The similarities in subject matter, themes, or even specific story events that you seem to be calling plot, are in fact formal characterics of story/fabula/histoire, and are not to be confused with plot/syuzhet/discours.
Sure, go ahead. But remember, these are all different (but related stories) with different plots. I realize that the term "plot" has taken on the more popular meaning that you give to it in this example, but this popular usage of the term makes it almost completely useless as an analytical tool, which seems to me to be of importance when discussing aesthetic form. It is not even congruent with most practical manuals on screenwriting. IOW, it only adds to the confusion.Again, not true. We might recognize an old story masquerading as a new one (as in, "West Side Story" is basically the same story of "Romeo and Julia"). In that case, we might indeed know how the story will start and how it will end. But that is not necessarily true of the plot. The plot might very well 'begin' with the middle of the story ('in medias res'), proceed to tell the start of the story through a flash back and then tell the end of the story.A plot can not be told. A story can, in different ways even. In fact, the way a plot communicates story information to the viewer/reader, is know as narration.Well, you seem to explain this very well, except that porn hasn't the same problem, the problem is much worse. While it can be argued successfully that there are only a handful of basic narrative themes (good vs evil, nature vs culture, boy meets girls, ...), these abstract narrative structures (often genre related) still can be translated in a mere infinite number of different concrete stories. And each one of those can be told in an almost equally infinite number of ways (there can be many variations in the three basic formal plot elements: causality, time and space). Compare this with your statement that "there is only so many ways to 'do sex'" and you will understand why I wrote that "the semantic field of porn is way too narrow in comparison with 'mainstream' cinema." And that was exactly my point I was making: if you want to demonstrate the limited possibilities of innovation within porn, it is not such a good idea to compare porn to 'mainstream cinema'. And that was my point.

Lindi just posted a review of one of Candida Royalle's projects, and did a pretty good job of summing up the usual dreary features of this sort of "porn for women." Forgive us, Selena, if some of us are skeptical about Decades , but we have seen this road wandered down before, and the results usually are not porn for men or women. They are porn for the "Stop" button on your DVD player. I wish the best for Decades , but your follow-up post sounds a little ominous to me. I think if I were to make a porno aimed more at women, I would want to change in very basic ways the "semiotic field" (to use Walter's term) of the genre, both in terms of the story/fantasy vignettes, and in terms of the structural and stylistic features of the sex scenes. What this means in simple terms is this: you don't change the driver--you build a new car. And that is a bit hard to do in porn for a lot of reasons. For example, you ask about female "fetishes." I don't think the number of fetishistic impulses anyone has is related to his or her gender. But fetishistic sexual material for women has been marginalized in much conventional hardcore (if it has no mutual interest for male viewers) so the subject is hard to identify. And often when it is identified--the desire to see male masturbation, for example--there are other problems to contend with, as you have described in this case.
As far as the limitations of porn and the possibility of innovation in form and content--popular entertainment is consumerist by nature, and imposes its own limitations on its products. These become the "rules" of the genre, you might say, and to break them is to risk alienating your target audience. This film appears to be following the tradition of couples/cable/softcore porn rather than rocking the boat. This seems odd to me, since the target audience in this case (women who dig hardcore porn) should have a lot fewer preconceptions about what they expect to see than the traditional male viewer. Or do they?
I don't know anyone who enjoys watching videos from Femme productions.* But whatever one might think of Ms. Royalle's films, the fact remains that she's been cranking them out for years now, so I'd have to assume that there is a market for her vision of "erotic adult entertainment". Porn for the timid? Sure, but apparently there are enough of them out there, buying her work, and keeping her in production year after year.
What Candida's films and typical gonzo fair have in common is that they are both defined at least as much by what they aren't as by what they are. When you buy Femme, or Anabolic, or RDL part of what they're selling you is a promise that you won't be subjected to any buzz-kills when you're in the middle of beating off. (How well they do or don't fufill that promise is a popular subject of debate in these forum.)
To my mind this bears a striking resemblence to the rules observed by genre fiction, both on the creative and consumptive side of the equation. Buying a pulp romance of a certain line or from a certain author is (more or less) your guarentee that you'll get just the sort of book you'll want to read. In exchange for this promise, readers are willing to forgive a lot. The key is that they mostly get what they want, and never get what they don't want. Romance lines in particular have very strict rules about what sex acts will be permissilbe between what sorts of characters, as well as how graphically these acts will be discussed. Their Author's Guidelines sounds like Ric Williams describing what Skeeter will and will not be allowed to do when directing for Private.
Obviously this is the safest, and maybe even the best way to undertake the commercial manufactor of entertainment. A lot of lip service gets paid to the ideal of innovation, but the fact is innovation is almost always a tactic of last resort, employed by people and organizations that have no other choice.

* I don't really know anyone who enjoys mainstream porn either.
I just want to see the guy lick the cum off the woman's breasts. Or, maybe he can cum in a lead crystal wine goblet (say, the Waterford Lismore pattern, my favorite) and drink it down himself . High class and fetish-ishtic, at the same time (I'm joking, of course)
Lindi, your review of the Candide Royalle film was hilarious; did you finish your taxes, too? I assume that this kind of boring film is meant for cable somewhere, and that's why it has so many strictures on its content. It's not the case of what women want, but what cable TV executives are asking for.
Tony C, you have a point, if a person reads a romance novel, they are expecting a certain content, and that's what these softcore porn films mirror, to a degree.
Walter, I agree with your analysis of movie story/plot lines, even though I can't discuss such fine points of cinema at the level that you can. Another movie that has a heavy sex scene (simulated) is "Monsters Ball" with Billy Bob Thorton and Halle Berry. Of course, the viewer knows that these two are going to end up together, but the story/plot establishes their characters well beforehand, so that when the inevitable happens, it still seems fresh, and adds to the heat of the scene. Also, the fact that both performers were naked ratcheted up the heat level - to tell you the truth, these two were hotter than ~80% of the sex scenes I watch in porn.
Getting back to the topic of this thread, I want to see a sex scene in a bedroom, kingsize bed, with expensive bedsheets - I prefer the Fieldcrest Charisma 300 count Pima cotten ones , in either pale blue or pale pink. I don't want any cheap K-mart cotten/polyester sheets, and no yellow couches, either - especially the one that belongs to Max Hardcore.
Someone's been doing some research ( hope it was fun ).
Hang on a second , I think I've worked out who you are ! Are you dating an actor boyfriend with an improbably large chin , whilst hauling around your own stupendous derriere ? And do you star in a succession of awful movies whose sole purpose appears to be getting you into the next male fantasy outfit ? The only time I can ever remember hearing tell of 300 count sheets ( or any other count ) was in the demands of said star - JLo . It came to light that she simply couldn't stay at a hotel unless the bed linen was of an appropriate standard . The Diva !
I'm right with you on the quality issue though , the higher class the production values are : the less * sleazy * the feature appears to me . Hence the more believable I find it that the women may actually want to be with the males , and vice versa .
The two changes I'd love to see explored in Adult ( and executed well ) should also appeal to a more female audience - with luck . First would be to insist on more full body shots at all times ; before , during , and after the act . Yes , I realise that this crosses Selena's frustration of posters claiming that their way is the best ( nay only ) way to shoot a scene . But , damit , I'm right ! Besides , the close-up fans can always loop that footage endlessly and achieve the same effect as half the pornos I've seen .
As an example , I watched a feature last night with Shanna McCullough , a woman ( not a girl ) and was pretty excited to see her scene . How would she become entangled with her lover ? Would their hands be all over each other ? Did he want to fuck her as much as I did at that moment ? Sadly none of these questions were answered . He did have his dick in her - and moved it back and forth - but other than that it was hard to tell what was going on . Sure , this is an extreme example , but these things happen in most porn I've seen to some extent or other .
My second change would be far more difficult to pull off , but could reap a greater reward in the enticing of women viewers to a project . It's simple , a connection between the performers . Not merely the joined at the hip variety , but also an emotional or lustful one . All the moments that Renee listed as being among her favourites are all interactions between the actors . Whether it's out of lust or love , tenderness or passion doesn't matter . The key is to persuade us that they actually want to be in that room ( or outside ) with each other , doing what they are . This is probably a nearly impossible feat to achieve , or at least that is the impression I get from reading the above posts .
Maybe the reasons for the compartmentalized , plastic version of sex that so much porn offers are as Lazarus and TC say . On the other hand couldn't it simply be easier to plow the well trod path . Are the marketers really offering what the consumers want ? Or are they stuck inside their own self-reverential bubble , oblivious to the possibilities open to them ? The Fashionistas was excellent in many ways , so good porn can be made . It's just a question of who is willing to try .
Oh , and I for one am looking forward to Decades . If SS says it's more than just a marketing strategy then that's enough to raise my hopes . Bring on the release date .
No, I am not Jennifer Lopez, moonlighting here on ADT as a porn fan in cyberspace. I happen to have Charisma sheets (they are cotton, but feel like silk), and yes, I have "researched" them in the bedroom , if you will. I first heard about them on the Oprah TV show; she found out about them at a Beverly Hills hotel.
But I've occasionally come across such scenes in gonzo films, meant solely for men. A recent one is PXP's 'The Pussy is not Enough', the fourth scene with Manuel Ferrara and a German actress, Victoria. It was done in a bedroom, and it was clear that these two liked performing with each other. In the BTS footage, shot before the above scene, you can see the couple together, and they both look thrilled just to be standing next to each other.
Another one is the 2nd scene in 'Rocco Invades Poland', where Rocco is with a tall blonde called Agnes. For 40 minutes, he literally forgets that anyone else is in the room with them. At one point, he got so worked up, that he blurted out "I love you" to her (I am not making this up), completely spontaneous and totally unexpected in a gonzo film , but it was plenty fun to watch, and I think a decent number of women would like watching this (Rocco wasn't at his roughest, maybe 2-3 mild slaps).
Now, back to my fetishistic requirements for my dream film. I've been wondering which studio, Anabolic or Red Light District, would be better suited for my expensive crystal/bedsheet criteria . Now that I think of it, Vince Vouyer comes to mind as the ideal director for this film; he certainly has a winning way with women, knows how to bring out the best in them, at least I gather as much from a recent ADT thread.
Two movies that I enjoyed because they had an approach that seemed women-friendly were Seductions 4 (though not the later ones in that series), and Young and wild 1, and 2. We're still talking hard pounding sex, dp's, a dpp, and even A2M as long as everybody's digging it. What I appreciated about these movies were the sense of pleasure for all parties, the way they stepped away from the formulaic, and the presence of a few sexual moves seldom seen in porn. Incidentally, they also had some upscale sets and generally loving scenarios, but those aren't a necessity for me - I am equally happy (or happier) with a well done gritty set and raw, aggressive, lustful sex between strangers, cheating spouses, etc.
For me, it's not what they do, or where they do it, or what they wear, it's about attitude, enjoyment, and variety.
Hence, I also enjoyed the intense and rough last scene in Killer Pussy 15, which was alive with connection and enjoyment, although I am not at this time pitching it as 'women's porn.'
I couldn't agree with Katja Kassin more. It always amazes me the lengths that directors and videographers will go to neglect their female viewers. I constantly read interviews with directors who say the reason they always leave the guy out of the scene is because the male viewers want to pretend that they're in the scene with the female performer. I'd like to know if these directors realize that female viewers would enjoy doing the same thing if what we wanted to see wasn't always completely excluded from the scene. It's so frustrating to sit thru a 2 hr. 30 min. DVD and each scene in it is filmed with hundreds of things for the male viewers to get off on and not even one thing for me to do the same. It's unfair.
I also agree, as boring as I find them, the material that Candida Royalle & couple-friendly distributors put out definitely have a large audience of their own or those releases would not be so popular. "Decades" sounds like a neat concept. I always have respect for folks who have the balls to be the first to try something different or take a chance on something new. If I could say one thing to the makers of "Decades" it would be not to assume that the only thing female viewers want to see is cute, romantic sex with more emphasis on set designs and storylines than the sex itself. I prefer watching harder, stronger rough sex. I don't really care so much about watching scenes with more emphasis on the man than the female. I just want to see the chemistry between the performers (that look in their eyes or reactions during the intercourse), instead of constant closeups of only the female.
This follows a format in the shoots I do. There is lots of kissing, lots of caressing, I take their clothes off a little at a time......slow teasing down south.......taking precome and teasing nipples with it and lubricating clits with it......genuine climaxes form being caressed.....TONS of oral sex on the woman first but it starts out with belly button tongue kissing, tongue teasing bare mounds and inner thighs.....taking along time to get to the point.....women love to be teased and really warmed up in advance bringing them to the point just ever so slightly before they get frustrated....
The eventual intercourse starts out with lots of dick to clit and pussy lips teasing, not putting it in right away, teasing the women.....intercourse is done more slowly so viewers can watch every inch caressing the inside of the woman....lots of her pussy juice on my dick shots, no lube needed, lots of her pussy juice trickling down her lips and in between the cheeks, and if I connect with the woman actress and have a connection with her, they usually make me come like a freight train....you can hear our genuine breathing and sighs....the breathing part is powerfully erotic. I tell actresses not to do the fake screaming nonsense, to just be exactly like they are in real life, whatever that is. The pleasuring the woman doesn't stop with my climax either......whatever she wants....
One woman who had never even done any type of nude modeling before, I did her first shoot, she sat down on me cowgirl and the camera was set up showing her from behind and rather then doing the up and down thing, because I could stay hard she just sat down all the way and ground away..I told her to do it exactly how it felt best for her, not to worry about me.....when she climaxed, you could see in her body and the way she was grinding you could tell her approaching the point of no return, then watching her clinching her buns and her ass shaking as she climaxed.....that is my idea of how to do an erotic shoot!
I am not into that facial or come spraying on the body nonsense either....that is not how a boyfriend and girlfriend have sex.....I also think women actresses get shortchanged in the oral department...what's up with that!? When I am with my female friends we LOVE to watch guys going down on women.....in my shoots it is so hot to watch the woman peek when they are receiving oral, then close her eyes, then peek again.....you can just tell the look of pure pleasure on their faces....very hot!
Even though they are gonzo semi-pov, because of all the foreplay and oral on the woman, my shoots take longer at around 2-3 hours but nobody ever complained! lol.... Plus I do not like to interrupt things with constant camera moves.
One of these days I am going to set up a videocam and tell the woman to decide what happens in the shoot.
Thanks for the links and bumping this one up, Rob.
I'm so looking forward to Decades . It was supposed to be released this spring, but I couldn't find a release date on their website. I liked what I saw however, including another movie Velvet Thrust starring Julian that looked hot.
It will be great to be able to focus on the men for a change, and they do use very attractive ones.
Aw, shucks, I am just an average regular guy...I would post some vid screen caps of me anbd some women actresses doing boy/girl shoots but I haven't figured out how to embed photos here ...yet...lol
Maybe I just assumed that this was going to be on dvd, but it sounds more like VOD, satellite and cable TV content. I applaud their effort at any rate, and hope that it becomes available soon.
Here's one of their press releases:
Poised to change the way Erotic programming is viewed forever, INPULSE DIGITAL TV GROUP (IDTVG) announces the launch of INPULSE TV (ITV), the first Erotic Network created for women who love and enjoy men. Debuting in the second quarter of 2004, the Network will be dedicated to serving women viewers and will be available on Cable, VOD platform and Direct Broadcast Satellite. ITV will also offer their product online and will become the first Internet Channel developed specifically to stream Erotic content for women. With no Erotic content currently available for women, production entity INPULSE PICTURES is producing original movies for ITV.
With ten films already completed and ready to premiere, the company intends to produce 4 original movies per month. Films are being shot in HDTV also making the company the first provider of Erotic programming for women in this format.
[Huge quote removed. Once again please do not needlessly quote people's entire posts -steph]
It's about friggin time. I don't see why it is so hard to skyrocket the female fan base of porn. If they start marketing male stars as they do female stars, we may have more women watching porn than men. Randy Spears was the perfect guy to market to women because he possessed the animal intensity associated in raincoater porn and the finesse of feature porn. They blew it.
I still can't believe the numbers of women who love porn targeted toward men. Just imagine if some of these studios would get their head out of their asses how bigger this fanbase could be.
They actually put out there 1st movie already, and my girlfriend bought it soon as she saw it, i think it'll do well.

Huh??
Okay, you answered the two questions no, and no. That's your opinion and that's fine, and what Selena asked for. But to say "Grow up?". From previous posts of yours, I assume that you are a guy. To tell her to grow up is like telling her that you know women better than she does. I've also read most, if not all, of Selenas posts and I would dare say she knows women a little bit better.
I'm a bit late chiming in on this Selena. I don't know the answers to the two questions you asked, but would I pick it up to see what it is like? Yes. I'm always interested in something that introduces porn in a different way and manner.
I've picked up, or rented, most of the stuff you have recommended. You haven't hit it 100% with me, but 85% - 90% ain't bad. That would be the same with most reviewers that I tend to agree with.
That's great news, Only. Is the movie Decades and where did she buy it? I've looked at their website and could find nothing about any movies being released on dvd, and have had no luck with email inquiries, so I was beginning to lose hope.
'Decades' sounds like a great idea, but after reading the Adultdvdempire review for 'Velvet Thrust' I have some doubts. While maybe being more focused for women it still had the two highest turn-offs for my wife: external cum shots (facials), and highly visible large tattoos. I realize of course that different women have different takes on what's erotic/arousing, and that you cant please everyone, but FACIALS? Somehow I wonder how much that really appeals to women (I find it to be degrading personally).
Although, its sounds like maybe with 'Decades' they are getting things in the right direction so we'll just have to see when it gets here.
Any idea on a release date yet?

If one understands the actual function of porn,it becomes easier to answer the types of questions posed by miss Silver.Men's magazines and adult videos are designed to activate a specifically male brain mechanism that produces sexual arousal when men experience, visually, NOVEL women in their enviroment. This psychological proccess maximized male reproductive success during the long span of human evolution by motivating men to seek out more opportunities to spread their genes.
Because this same response would have spelt reproductive disaster for women, who had to make a huge investment in each of their offspring, tendencies in women to become aroused by visual stimuli were strongly selected out of ancestral human gene pools.Hence there is little reason to expect a large female market for the films miss Silver is discussing in her thread.
SEXUAL VARIETY is what porn is really all about, fresh female faces and bodies.
What you have put is the MEN's (or what is supposed to be the typical mans) point of view. That was not the original intent of the thread or what Selena asked. To reiterate, the title to the thread is "Decades": Porn for Women Only?
The two questions that you answered were specifically asked to elicite responses from a womans point of view and whether this would be on target. Using the mans point of view, or justification, or whatever you wish to call it, does not answer the questions from the point of view that Selena was asking.
That's exactly what I thought when I read the review...why is this dvd exactly like every other porn dvd out there, in this one regard. If I want to see facials, I can watch an RLD film (their non-creampie, non-swallowing ones). Makes me think that the Impulse pictures people, whoever they are, didn't do much of any marketing research, but are just guessing what women fans want to see in porn. Couldn't they have been more original?
But I see the film's available for rental, so I may eventually have a look at it, to see how different it is from the usual fare.
Dumblonde, please, please, please let us know, even by email, what you were going to post. I bet it was a hoot.

Selena Silver's question number 2 was,WILL ENOUGH WOMEN BUY IT TO MAKE IT COMMERCIALLY VIABLE?I have tried to show why this is most unlikely to be the case,in illustrating that porn is geared to produce arousal for male brains by taking advantage of mental mechanisms that evolved for increasing male reproductive success during the immense span human evolution.
It is this ancient male desire to mate with fresh, fertile females that supports the multi-billion dollar porn industry around the world.
That this VISUALLY ORIENTED,VARIETY CENTERED sexual nature is absent in women is vitally important to any discussion concerning the viability of marketing porn to women.
Reading some of these threads, one gets the impression that people think "porn for women" is just waiting to jump out from hiding, like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster. But an understanding of the very different biological natures of men and women should put this naive view to rest.
As a footnote, consider the homosexual market for porn; gay men support a huge porn industry, while lesbian porn is(like straight female porn)virtually nonexistent. This illustrates that it is the MALE mind that responds to visual erotic stimuli and sexual variety.
While this sounds good in theory, it fails to take into account the fact that there ARE women who are aroused by erotic visual images. Given that I have personally met some of them, they probably exist in large numbers.
In any case, even if you were right, there would still be no excuse for that arrogant and patronising "grow up" comment.
Some people's beliefs are apparently resistant to data.
quod erat demonstrandum
Do you also believe that the earth is flat and the sun rotates around the earth?
Would you come up with actual data (peer review journals preferred) yourself, or do you keep spreading the word of truth apparently based on your readings of "Psychology Today" or the science addendum of the "National Enquirer"?
Your excursion into the field of evolutionary biology makes every biologist ROTFLHAOSTC.
Your teacher in biology happened to be a member of the Christian Morality Biology Board or something?
Try reading "Sperm Wars" from Robin Baker as a counterpoint for your view. This book seems fit for your level, although I admit it has also its flaws (as ever "popular science" book).
But if one only follows the "News and Views" section in Nature's print version, one notices that your views are ridiculous at best.
Women are not aroused by visual stimuli ? Most of my female friends, under the influence of alcohol, will guiltily admit that the 1st thing they watch in a man is ... his basket. Guys, never get out of home without a good pair of Levi's.

Zartyr, try reading the book Promiscuity:An Evolutionary History of Sperm Competition,by Tim Birkhead of the university of Sheffield for a complete refutation of the nonsense that Baker espouses.
I don't need peer reviewed journals to prove that what I've been saying is correct;the only review that matters is the marketplace, where the the desires and dispositions of millions of individuals are "tested" quite thoroughly each day in their buying preferences. These choices reveal more clearly than anything else that men and women differ to an extraordinary degree. And these differences are a product of natural selection.
Cyberchicken said: "IAFD is a treasure. It should be enshrined in the porno hall of fame. How I managed to enjoy porn movies before discovering that site is beyond me."
I received a reply from Sandra Styles (one of the founders of Inpulse Digital)
I think that they're concentrating right now on the cable deals since that's where the money is, but it sounds like they are making it happen. She also said that someone else would be getting in touch with additional information about their movies.
As for Don Juan here, this is a very interesting and complex issue, but I'm not sure anyone knows the answers. Aren't there definitive studies showing that females generally aren't as visually stimulated or oriented as men? I've always heard that and assumed it to be true, but I'd be interested in reading more about it from a credible source. It's also possible that a lot of women are just having better sex than what we typically see in a porno, so that's why I'm hoping that Inpulse will make it, although Velvet Thrust really doesn't sound all that different.
Er...I'm not sure it was all that funny, but it's possible that there was an expletive or two

Women are less likely to pay for sex then men so porn towards women is a waste of time to me.
I do have to wonder why, with the thousands of internet sites showing nude females, there's not one (except for the one WB posted) nude male site that isn't gay, nor any magazines for women that I know of.
