One of my DVD players is finally dieing, and it's time to get a new one. I've got a couple high end players, so I'm looking for a cheaper one, but still the best one I can get for the money. Anybody have any good suggestions for a player in the 150$ range or below? I was looking at the Sony DVP-NS775V, but that seemed to get some bum reviews with some freezing issues, and playability is key to me, so If anybody could suggest something, I would appreciate it, thanks.

I've found Sony is always behind the leading edge with technology... they have been for probably 10 years now. Although I still love there tube televisions.

Have you tried Audio Review? Any other good review sites out there?

I'd go see one live and see it in action, to see if the menus and user interface are decent. If you want to play mp3s take an mp3 disc with you to see how quick it will work.

For me a DVD player must have:
progressive scan component video outputs for 480p
composite for legacy televisions
S-video for the best 480i
digital audio optical and coaxial for 5.1
analog audio RCA for legacy receivers and televisions
Ability to play and CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R*, DVD-RAM*, DVD+RW, DVD-RW*
*=optional for me

I don't think getting HDMI or DVI is called for because I believe even the best DVD player is only capable of providing you with a 480p picture, a limitation of the image quality on current DVDs. Hence the reason we all need to get HD-DVD versions of our existing DVD library. If not can someone correct me?

If they do claim 720p or higher output there's some processing going on that may or may not work effectively. See it in person!

HD Technology is in progression right now. DVDs only produce 480p, HD television broadcasts up to 1080p and HD televisions currently are only capable of showing 720p. Fun wow... lots of obsolete hardware is being sold at top dollar.

If you're looking for cheap and versatile , you'll be hard pressed to find a better value than this unit from Pioneer.. It also plays SACD & DVD Audio discs if you're into that sort of thing.

Thanks for the input, I'll check out that player and the review site. Like I said above, I already have two very high end players, so I don't need the cutting edge stuff, this player is just a spare really, but I do some of my reviews in on the one that needs to be replaced, so I want something pretty decent. I guess I'm probably just gonna have to bite the bullet on one, because it seems every player I look at, has someone bitching about something with it.

When I was looking for a "backup" DVD player, PAL to NTSC conversion was a requirement. I found the Yamakawa 238 at E-cost for less than $50 (after rebates) at ecost.com. I also picked up a Yamakawa 218 for about $30 (also after rebates) that I gave to a friend.

Ecost has sold out of both of these players, and it appears that the 238 has been discontinued. But the 218 is available from a few stores for around $60. It's not a great looking player. It has no front panel display. But it works great, converts PAL to NTSC and can be made region-free with a series of remote control keystrokes.

If the the ability to import DVD's from Europe is something that you would like to have, the Yamakawa wouldn't be a bad choice.

the phillips dvp642 is 66 on ecost and it plays divx and mpeg-4 files and seems to be the hot toy these days. i'm a sheep and i bought one a few months ago and the thing is a big deal if you don't care about dvi and want something that plays anything you feed it. put the miami vice set or anything you can get on a computer on 1 dvd and the quality is close to transparent at about six movies/1 single-layer dvd. my collection isn't much of one but this thing is basically made for people here--you've got the ability to put entire series or a girl's filmography on one disc if you're on a specific kick that day. it's cheap and does something interesting you can't do with a meridian 800 and worth a shot.
