Right now I have my Sony DVD player connected via the regular component cables and with an HDMI-to-DVI cable, for comparison's sake. Oddly, I find that when viewing in DVI mode, I can't adjust the screen format. It plays everything in 16:9, and I can't get to the 4:3 or zoom-and-stretch modes for things like TV-show discs. (Added: Oh yeah, and porn.) Just wondering what the point of that is, or if that's just a "feature" of this crappy (but actually mostly satisfactory) RCA projection set. Bill  All-Star Member 5334 Posts 6/00 | Posted - May 3 2007 : 9:41PM Many upconverting DVD players have a menu option asking how you want the signal displayed for non anamorphic DVD's. If your player has that option, that is how you can adjust the picture. The other option, if the DVD player allows it, is to turn the upconvert feature off when viewing a non-anamorphic DVD. Then the TV should allow the stretch modes to work. If you can't figure out what features the DVD player has, post the model number and I'll take a look at the owner's manual online.  [Link] |

Overall I would rate this player rather poorly for features, ease of use and all-around just doing things in a sensible way. It's inferior to my old Pioneer 300-disc changer in almost every way except the two that were essential: It holds 100 more discs, and it upconverts. [Link] |
| Bill All-Star Member 5334 Posts 6/00 | Posted - May 3 2007 : 11:01PM You missed a third benefit of the DVP-CX995V, although they won't daisy chain to one another, they have the option of three different sets of remote control codes. So, with an HDMI switcher, you can actually have a total of 1200 discs, instead of the 600 total with two daisy chained Pioneers (which was the limit). While I agree with you that I like the Pioneer's ease of use better than the Sony's, they both kick the crap out of the much more expensive Kenwood's that I used to own. The modes that you need to experiment with are the 4:3 output and HDMI Resolutions options within the "Screen Setup" page from the "Setup Display" screen. Instructions are on page 78 of the owner's manual. BTW, if you're using this DVD player primarily for porn, you might want to consider leaving the Resolution set to 480p as the default and keep control of the TV's zoom features. I don't think that you will see a significant difference in picture quality. When you watch a mainstream Anamorphic movie, change the Resolution to Auto.
