I have quite a few WMV files that I would like to edit down, basically for storage reasons. What is the simplest, least time-consuming tool for doing so? I would appreciate any suggestions.

"Edit down" means cut out the unwanted portions and keep only the good stuff?
Or do you to want keep the entire video but re-encode it to make a smaller filesize?

For now I would be happy to simply cut out the unwanted portions. I'm pretty happy with the image quality of these files. It's simply that they take up so much space is the problem and given that most of them have 5+ minutes of unwanted material, it seems like cutting out that stuff is the easiest way to go.

AVS Video Converter works pretty well for me. It has the advantage of letting you edit out multiple sections at once. It isn't free, though, and your time consumed will depend upon how much CPU power you can throw at it.

Windows has a component/accessory called Windows Movie Maker which you might want to check out. It may already be installed on your machine, or you may have to go through the process of adding it from the Windows DVD or maybe from MS's website; I'm not sure exactly how it works.

Movie Maker is supposedly way improved with Win 7, so I guess I'll go ahead and use that when I get a new computer later this summer.

There are a few freeware utilities that you can use to chop portions out of a clip without having to reencode but they can be picky at times and sometimes won't let you do what you want to do. As long as you're using a format they support and don't try to mix formats, you should be OK. Sorry I don't know what they're called but looking around on Snapfiles you should find them under video editors.

I'm a little late to the party, but I hope Porn Scout will read this.
The perfect tool to split, cut, trim your videos is asfbinwin. This tool is a lossless wmv editor. That means it's crazy fast and keeps the original quality of your video files. Using movie maker is going to be a pain compared to this.
If you're not satisfied with it for some reason, you can try Movica (it's powered by the same program) or Avidemux.
