I was cleaning out my document file folder yesterday, where I keep all my tax documents, bank account statements etc., when I happened upon a receipt, that for the purchase of my computer, dated 14th October 2002.

My computer is 4 years old today (or yesterday, depending where you is in the world). So I say, Happy 4th Birthday, My Computer!

I paid, then, AUD1997-00 precisely. Nowadays, even with all the hardware upgrades I have added to it, I suppose it'd be worth around AUD600.

How old is your computer? What upgrades, if any, have you performed to it? What are some of its basic specifications?

Here is a quick rundown on my computer:

Originally -

40 GB Harddrive
256 MB DDR SDRAM
2.41 GHz Intel Pentium IV Processor
CD-RW Drive
1.44 MB Floppy Drive
48 MB Onboard Graphics Accelerator
6 USB 2.0 ports
______

At Present -

40 GB Harddrive
768 MB DDR SDRAM
2.41 GHz Intel Pentium IV Processor (could be on its last legs, as my system says it is only running at 1.82 GHz. Well, 4 years out of one processor - can't complain about that)
CD-RW Drive
DVD-RW Dual Layer Drive
1.44 MB Floppy Drive
256 MB Sapphire Radeon Accelerated Graphics Port
6 USB 2.0 ports

Sounds like you have your processor underclocked. They dont slow down as they age. Something is set wrong in your BIOS.

Thought for you -

DDR Ram is dirt cheap right now - buy a couple of 1 gig sticks and swap out the hard drive for a fast new one. You can get a fast 250 gig drive for $75 if you wait for a sale. If you are still running the original installation of windows, time to reload and voilia! Brand new system performance again.

I myself am running a Intel 875 board with a 3Ghz P4 Northwood and 2 gigs of RAM and a ATI All In Wonder Radeon 9070 and 2 DVD burners along with about 2 terabytes of hard drives in a Raid Array from hell.

Started off as a P4 1.6 overclocked to 2.3Ghz. 512 megs of Ram, 64 meg GForce card and a couple of 40 gig drives back in '02.

I may swap out my video card next year but I'm not getting a new system until the quad cores are out and have dropped to the mainstream price point - probably late next year or early '08.

I thought of that possibility yesterday afternoon, then promptly forgot about it. I shall definitely have a look at that. Thanks for reminding me, Unicorn!
I actually did a clean install just two days ago, and the difference in speed in opening folders etc. is substantial. I have a copy of xp professional with sp2, all on one CD. It's an all-in-one simple install, without having to fiddle about with the old floppy disk boot trick.
I didn't know they were already developing quad cores. I only found about about the new dual core processors when I read an advertisement in a newspaper for them a few days ago.

My computer is about a year old, I guess. I put it together myself:
Gigabyte motherboard
Intel P4 3.2GHz
1 GB DDR SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9800 / 128MB
? IDE HD - 60GB (C drive)
Maxtor SATA HD - 280GB (D drive)
NEC DVD-RW drive
Sony DVD-ROM drive
HP CD-RW drive - came out of my old system
Echo Layla 24/96 sound card

I haven't done any upgrades to it.

As a constant modification.... (I never really stop upgrading the computer. LOL) I think the olderst think in the set-up is either the DVD-ROM or the CPU. I'm thinking that CPU is around 1.5 years old. Here's my specs

* CPU: AMD 64 3500+ (Socket 939)
* RAM: 2GB DDR-400 (2x1GB sticks) in Dual Channel
* Motherboard: ECS KN1 SLI Extreme (Damn it I need another 7800GT for SLI!)
* Video Card: PCI-e Nvidia 7800GT - 256MB GDDR3

* Hard Drives: OS/Apps - Western Digital 74GB Raptor @ 10,000 (SATA)
