Don't ask.
One of my problems is that I don't have sound. I installed the drivers that came with the motherboard. That worked before, but it did not this time. What do I have to do?

What sound chipset do you have? If you can tell me what MoBo you have I can look it up too.
I have had that same problem. I have a realtek chipset and my nVidia board drivers can make it play sounds but the actual drivers from the maker's web site fuck it up. Maybe your problem is the reverse.

Another thing: remember when you guys helped me install that second drive a number of months back? XP is not recognizing it. Any ideas?
Plus somebody sent me the url of a forum where these sort of questions can be asked. Whomever you are, could you send it to me again?

I had that happen. Turns out the SATA cable was a tiny bit loose. I used tape to hold it in tight. It's worth a try.

Have you tried this driver?

Asus P4P800-VM SoundMAX Audio Driver 4.0.0.22
It might work if the one you got for the board did not.
Before you install it go to add/remove programs and see if you can remove whatever sound driver is showing up there now.

I installed SP2 and reinstalled the driver and now things are hunky dory. Also, my slave drive showed up, so no problems on that front.

I'm so glad I got rid of that Norton Anti-virus. It used to take between 8 and 9 minutes for a warm boot; now it's 1 or 1 1/2 tops.

The original problem was I downloaded a keygen for a pirated version of Photoshop. I know, let me have it. . I thought my antivirus software was on, but when i looked at my sys tray and saw it was not, I went into a panic. I found a utility that can tell me what a particular process is doing and I discovered the keygen was modifying my system files. So I began reinstalling right away.

I recently ditched Norton even though I had two months left on the license. I installed BitDefender instead and have been very happy with it.

AVG for me. Norton is a little tricky. The uninstall doesn't do it all, and it can cause problems. You need to go to their site.

I guess that's the one nice thing I can say about Vista. When I had XP, I liked it and everything worked (usually) but for some reason or another, I always ended up having to reinstall every couple of months. I haven't had to reinstall Vista since August. The downside of that, however, is that Vista takes for fucking ever to reinstall when you actually have to do it. at least for me it does.

^^^^ Pity the poor windows user. Are you serious, a reinstall every couple of months? On the worst Windows system I ever owned, I was only reinstalling every 6 months.

Well, it was probably usually my fault because I'm forever tinkering with software I know nothing about. Installing and uninstalling, fooling around with settings when I have no idea what they do. I never shied away from messing around when I had XP because a reinstall only took about 15 minutes on my system and I always knew that whatever the problem was, the reinstall would fix it.
I've been pretty agitated with Vista a few times and even looked into Linux but I really didn't like the sound of it. Something about command prompts and so forth. And also not being able to use some of my favorite software. Hell with it. Vista came with the system. It was bumpy at first but things are gradually improving with updates.

I've had this machine around 5 years and this is the second install. It was really slow too. A warm boot took 9 minutes.
