I like some of the freeware versions of windows explorer and would like to substitute one of them when i click on a folder. Is this possible?

I use PowerDesk6 Pro (which is not free).
It is a great product.
I would be lost without it.
They have a free trial version of the standard version, which is fully-usable with no time-limits.

Perhaps I was not clear. I know what program I want to use, but I don't know how to make all my clickable folders boot *that* program.

you can use Firefox to browse files on your pc as you would in Windows Explorer. For example if you type "c:/" in the address bar, it will take you to your local c drive.

It's a whole lot easier if you use a program that is designed to replace Windows Explorer -- like PowerDesk/PowerDesk Pro.
When setting preferences, it has a section titled "Replace MS Explorer."
You simply check the box for "Use PowerDesk to open My Computer and folders."
To sum up: PowerDesk offers a free version and it does exactly what you say you want it to do.

Neech, what program(s) are you looking at specifically?
Its possible to use ANY program as your shell -- the question is whether the program can handle it or not...

I just installed powerdesk and it's awesome! What I wanted to do was use a third party version of windows explorer, but i wanted it to open regardless of any folder i clicked on. Ie, i didnt want to open the program first then navigate to the folder. I thought there might be a setting in xp somewhere to do that, but apparently it in the third party program.

I don't think there is a way unless the program has an integral way of doing it. And even then, I'm not sure if there are any programs that do that.

Shell replacements go back at least to Windows 3.1 when Norton Desktop was a replacement shell for Windows 3.1 that looked a lot like Windows 95 would look -- desktop visible all the time, program manager groups hidden, individual icons on the desktop... (or I uiess some thought it made Win 3.1 look like a Mac...)
The most famous flop of a shell replacement was Microsoft Bob.
