The only game I play is SimCity. Outside that it's youtube videos which are the biggest drain. I use a lot of RAM because I use virtual machines. I definitely want at least 500 gig hard drive. I want 2 gigs of RAM. I need the machine to be *...quiet...* I don't want shit breaking down on me, so I want a good power supply, and heat sink for the chip, good cooling fans--things like that. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but I'm not trying to cut any corners except on labor. I hope to be able to do this for less than $1000. Where shall we begin? I think the case would be the most natural. That means we have to start talking about the motherboard.  [Link] |

I would say you can probably skip over getting a graphics card because most on-board video will do what you want. That saves money. Do you have an OS you want to install? What is it? Do you need to buy an OS (get XP)? My computer is loud as hell so I can't tell you too much about quiet stuff because I added tons and tons of fans. Every Antec power supply I have owned has been very quiet. (I have used it without all my noisy fans) If you don't demand tons of power an older socket 775 MoBo and a Pentium 4 3.4ghz chip with 2 gigs of ocz ddr2 might do the trick. [Link] |

The vendor might not be too willing to take it back.I'd go the other way around. Start with the motherboard, and worry about buying a case after you pick your mb. Finding a case shouldn't be a big deal anyway. Actually the combination of mb and cpu would be where I'd start. It doesn't sound like you need/want the latest, most high powered out there, so you begin to balance in cost, etc. In other words, no need to buy a $300 cpu when an $89 dollar cpu might do what you need. Since the mb and cpu have to agree with each other, it is a balancing act when choosing them. You're working on choosing both at the same time. [Link] |

I say that off the top of my head, because you indicated that you are not going to need a super-duper graphics card. But let's see what you come up with from that calculator. I would avoid the cheepo power supplies though. That would be the $20 kind. Get a quality name ps that exceeds your present wattage needs, and anything you think you might add later.
