I mainly buy dvd's from the porn companies. Only internet porn I buy is a membership to whipped ass for the hardcore lesbian bondage stuff that you can't see distributed by porn companies thru dvd.

I love shopping for DVDs though I do own more than a bit of internet porn. I think having a ps3 makes internet porn videos so much easier to watch on HDTVs. The quality doesn't always reach DVD level but if you can find sites that have most of their selection in HD then it'll look almost as good if not better.
I watch a lot of porn with other people so having the movies on DVD comes in more handy for me. Not everyone has a ps3 or 360 to watch downloaded porn videos on, and actually converting those to usable DVDs are too much trouble for me. So if I had to pick only one format, it'd be DVD for sure.

I prefer buying a DVD from my local porn shop. I like to shoot the breeze with the clerk there when I visit. I also rent titles from Family video. I'm glad that I found Adult DVD Talk last year because I can avoid those titles that get bad reviews here.

I like the idea of internet porn (i.e. downloading scenes you want etc) but the quality just isnt up to DVD standard yet.
The best quality videos on videobox for example are 64 hex 480 which is about 25% lower resolution than even a standard definition pal picture - the bit rate of online movies is also a lot lower and they have a higher compression ratio too which only serves to compound the issue.

I think you are mistaken. When I had access to Videobox about a year ago the highest resolution was 72 hex 480, which is exactly the same as you get with a NTSC DVD, and the videos I downloaded then look probably nearly as good as the original DVD. I did some brief eyeball comparisons with some original DVDs I happened to have handy, and didn't see much difference. Re-encoding to Windows media of course may add some artifacts.
To my eyes the HD scenes (720p, 1080p) on other sites look much better than porn DVDs, even with the relatively high compression used.

High Defintion Comparision
The average bitrates for the following can vary depending the length of the feature film and with or without extras.
Average Adult Blu-ray on 25 Gb Disc

Digital Playground: Fly Girls (2010) 3 hours + 17 minutes extra average bitrate was 11.3 Mbit MP4 according to www.xcritic.com
Elegant Angel: Busty Waitresses 2 hours 15 minutes + extra 21 Mbit MP4

Adult & Hollywood movie DVD
480p - Mpeg2 6 6000k (72 hex 480)
DVDrips backup on 2 CD-R
480p - Xvid, Divx 1500k
Example
DVD Porn 3 hour + 20 BTS = 5000k MPEG2
Internet Porn 3 hour + 20 BTS 4000K MP4 h.264 or WMV WMV9
The quality will be virtually the same. For the same bitrate, MPEG4 H.264 or WMV WMV9 has better technology and compression ratio than old MPEG2. MPEG4 H.264 and WMV WMV9 can save over 40% and 30% size & bitrate, respectively over MPEG2 yet still deliver the same quality picture.
Thus, unless the movie is on a blu-ray disc, internet adult videos has better compression technology and bitrate than DVD movie disc.
However, not all high definition videos are the same, here is an interesting article regarding fake High Definition videos on the internet. Currently, only Brazzers has the best 1080p High Definition videos followed by NaughtyAmerica, ZeroTolerance (ZTOD), and 21sextury.
Brazzers has the best High Definition videos with bitrate at 12 Mbps WMV HD. Realitykings & BangBros High Definition 720p bitrate is at 3 Mbps h.264 while DVD Mpeg2 is at 6.5 Mbps.
"Standard definition 480i DVD movies are typically 5 to 8 mbps (megabits per second) MPEG-2 whereas these so-called HD wannabes weigh in at a pathetic 1.5 to 4 mbps of 720p H.264.
Modern video compression codecs like H.264 or VC-1 can hide these compression artifact problems much better than MPEG-2 video compression but there’s only so much it can do. At best you might get away 50% more compression over older compression technology but 1.5 to 4 mbps H.264 will not be better than 8 mbps MPEG-2 under most video complexity requirements. The only time 4 mbps 720p will look better than 8 mbps 480i is when the video on the screen is almost entirely stationary or it’s a low-complexity video such as animation movies. "
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=511
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=959
This explains why during Realitykings & Bangbros 720p high definition motion scenes looks blurry & pixelated vs DVD..
For the price of one Adult Zero Tolerance DVD or $2.00 rental, you can download hundreds of high definition movies from Zero Tolerance homepage, www.ztod.com with better video quality than DVDs.
Currently, there is not enough blu-ray porn compare to the internet high definition content. In a few years, when adult DVDs have transition to Blu-ray discs, I will be getting more physical media, and until that happens, the internet has the highest quality videos.
For example, Evil Angel director Raul Cristian has high definition videos on his website, http://www.indexxxed.com , yet he does not put the videos out on blu-ray disc but only on standard DVDs, so for quality, the internet is the best. The same idea applies to ddfprod and ddfbusty via Swank Digital & New Sensation distribution, 21sextury, Brazzers, Naughtyamerica, Realitykings, Bangbros, and some studios with websites that state shot in High definition on their DVD, but the studio does not offer blu-ray option.
Once you go blu-ray, you can't go back to standard DVD.

Looking at their site now. Highest resolution I can find is 64 hex 480. You also have to bear in mind that I live in a PAL region. PAL is higher resolution than NTSC with about 20% greater vertical resolution. I can tell the difference on my 42 inch tv - even without the additional compression artifacts present on downloaded stuff.

I live in a PAL region as well, and I know about the different resolution. My point was that it is unreasonable to demand PAL resolution from a site that rips its content from NTSC DVDs (at least I think that's how they get it). Also I can assure you that the files I downloaded are 72 hex 480.
On reflection I should rephrase the "I didn't see much difference" to "I didn't see enough difference to warrant ordering the DVD, paying more than a month's membership at VB for it, and waiting 3 weeks for the DVD to arrive instead of downloading the one scene I actually wanted from that DVD in nearly the same quality(*)". One thing I have noticed about Videobox is that they tend to compress the hell out of the non-sex parts of the scenes, but when the actual action starts, the picture quality gets better. Also the quality varies between different clips, but the better ones are not significantly worse than the source material.
(*) I don't necessarily see this line of thinking as a good thing. For one thing, it devalues the work as a whole, just like picking and choosing tracks off albums. Also it steers porn viewing towards scene-based gonzo and away from features.

I dont think it is unreasonable and i'm not "demanding" anything - it is what it is. I was simply explaining my reasoning for still prefering DVD over downloaded content (which is what this thread is about isnt it?)

I'm a dvd man. Probably bought about a 1000.
I've never joined a website or downloaded a full movie. I have often bought dvds just from finding scenes on porn Tube sites though.
1. I watch porn in bed watching it through a TV. I very rarely wank to completion watching porn seated bolt upright on my PC/Laptop.
2. Dvds can be resold to at least recoup some of your outgoings.
3. I like having a physical product...and no need to worry about hard drive space.

There's a scene with Sasha Grey from covermyface.com where she gets creamed while a load drops onto her pics in some xxx magazine.
I'd love to get it on dvd, but it appears to be website only footage.
Not sure if it was originally part of the Baker's Dozen series? This stopped at number 9 on dvd.
Hopefully Brandon can get this on to dvd at some point. I'm sure quite a few of us would pick it up.

Completely agree with blurayporn. With more and more internet porn sites going to HD, physical media's days are numbered, save for rentals.
Subscribe to website of your choice, get high quality HD scenes on external hard drive, and watch on 60'' HD tv. Superb!

I like both. VideoBox is actually a way you can download movies that are FROM DVD porn. That was my way of getting DVD type porn. I also have a few actual DVD porns, "Black Cheerleader Search 38," Teen Cock Rockers 2," etc.
It just seems that there are much better scenes in internet land than dvd land. Example, you can't get kickass scenes like "Exploited Babysitter" like the Alexis Love one and her "mom." No "yellow discipline" was ever on dvd. And sexy and cool scenes like Ghetto Gaggers and FacialAbuse don't come across DVD's.
It's like getting a DVD is watching something you already know the story to. "Hi angel, let me give it to you nice and slow." Then the guy sticks it in and out and he cums.
Also in internet land, you can easily do a search for type of things float your boat. "black, white, cuckold, big tits, plump, barely legal, etc"

I happen to have an ISP that limits my download capability to 100G per month for set fee. Anything above that amount and I pay the extra fees and let me tell you these are significant. The advent of more and more HD scenes is limiting my choices when it comes to internet porn. I'd love to download the HD videos but I usually look for the lower resolution ones simply so that I don't have to dish out 200$ to 300$ more at the end of the month. A standard video is about 300 or 400 megs but an HD video is guaranteed to be above 1G.
I know that I'm not the only one but even if I was then I know that many different ISP are looking to limit download capability. The reason is simply to make more money with people that will download above their alloted amount. That's why I still buy quite a few DVD's.

That is actually quite common outside of North America. In New Zealand you don't even get 100GB before paying a per GB fee (I think their highest package with add-on doubler is 80GB.

I order DVDs because I want to watch them on my TV and I'm an idiot when it comes to technology. On the TGPs I see a lot of beautiful women that I'd love to have some scenes of but they appear to only be on the internet [for example Masha from Masha's World] If I had the know how I'd join the site and download and make my own DVDs. I'd experimented with the free samples provided by some sites but I can't seem to make a DVD that is playable on my DVD player. I don't want to spend the $ to join a site until I know I can make my own DVDs. [I was able to make a video CD from when I was a member of MET ART but the quality wasn't very good.]

I think notion of DVD's, Bluray Discs being phased out anytime soon is absurd. I think in the future there will just be two available formats. Just like you have hardcover, and soft cover for books. Think about it, if anything would be phased out, CD's would be the first thing phased out yet New CD's even Cd's of old previously released stuff are still being made, becasue there are still a sizable segment of the population who like to have a physical product as opposed to just a digitial download. The future of porn is embracing all formats of media.

I think dvd is much better for many reasons as many have stated before. I personally can't get into what i'm watching on a 17'' screen sitting on a chair at a desktop or on your lap on a laptop. Dvd will continue to be very popular and probably the best. I am glad to see the internet companies like reality kings and bang bros are putting the scencs on Dvd.

You have to understand that DVD porn isn't really conducive to the time and manner of some peoples' viewing opporunity - In the basement, hiding behind the water heater, with only the light off a dangling 40 watt bulb and only between 5:15 and 5:30 P.M., assuming they raced and got home before their wife, For those people, internet porn downloaded onto an iPhone might make more sense.

There are tons of excellent porn which is internet-only; you are depriving yourself if staying limited to DVD. The "tiny screen" problem can be solved by getting a digital media player which connects to a full-size TV screen in your favorite comfortable location. Then you can watch your downloaded internet porn without compromise. The internet companies that produce DVD's release only a fraction of their scenes on DVD; to get the full selection of available scenes, you have to join their websites.

Gummy Bear and Ninja1: Great posts both are very valid and clearly gives the main advantage with internet porn.
I myself also feel that the internet scenes in many cases are a lot better than the ones being released direct to DVD.
But that is more about likes and dislikes I guess. Nowadays most stars do internet aswell before it felt like a lot of stars didin't do internet stuff now its almost the opposite. So if I had to choose it would be really simple.

Internet porn? Not on a 346k connection. Video looks like crap at this speed.
I am a collector. I read reviews frequently. Try to avoid buying junk.
I'd like the option of purchasing scenes in a digital full resolution format that could be backed up (duplicated).
Storage of a large collection has become a space and weight issue.

If you buy downloadable porn, the connection speed doesn't affect video quality. A slower connection just makes for longer download times. After the file has been completely downloaded, it's equally perfect, whether done on a 346K connection or a 1M connection.

I agree, sort of. IMO DVD still has the edge when it comes to top shelf stuff (Elegant Angel, ZT, for people with different likes perhaps Evil Angel or JJV), but when it comes to what some might derisively call "assembly-line porn", the internet companies offer both more diversity and better quality, and at better prices, and it hasn't been particularly close for a couple of years now. I don't think the mid-range mainstream DVD studios (the Venoms and Lethal Hardcores of the world) will be around much longer.

Yeah I agree anabolic, Redlight, and Lethal hardcore studios are probably on their last leg but in my opinion good riddance. I mainly only by Evil Angel JJV, and Justin Slayer DVD's anyway, and I think the net is better at connecting with a Niche audience. If you like BDSM, Girls Masturbating, handjobs etc. the net is the place for that, but regular hardcore porn DVD with higher production values, and better chicks the DVD is better in my opinion. Although the website FTV has the hottest chicks, but the action is rather soft.

Just to get on the same page here...
We always hear about how tubesites are hurting the porn industry.
Obviously this is true.
However, the thrust is usually about how the tubesites are killing DVD sales.
Wouldn't they be hurting internet content sites and legitimate download sites, just as well?
Yet, we always hear about how the internet content model is the "future of porn."
If anything, I would think those disposed to stealing content via tubesites are even less likely to pay for content from the internet.
I've recently spent a lot of time downloading legitimate porn (e.g. Videobox), and spending even more time transcoding it to be able to watch it where and how I want (so I'm not tied to watching WMV files on a computer monitor).
What a huge fucking investment in time!
Please -- I want to buy the DVD and Blu-ray physical media!
In the long run, it's cheaper than all the memberships, downloading and processing.
I see a great value in sites like Videobox, as well.
One can view lots of content, and I can download things that I would seldom buy a DVD to own.
It's fun.
It also helps you see before buying and rule out those DVDs you don't want to buy.
BUT, when you have those must-have great scenes, physical media is what I want.
Even if I can download it.
A great scene is worth its weight in gold, and I will still buy DVDs just to own that one great scene.

^There's no way for a studio to compete with Videobox when it comes to price and content so the argument that it's cheaper to go the dvd or Bluray route doesn't work. If it did then studios wouldn't be dying left and right. The sheer number of movies available at Videobox is stagering and it gets bigger each day. The two things holding Videobox back is the resolution they currently offer on the bulk of their videos. They are not yet in HD but they are working on that one. The other thing is that you can't actually download the entire movie. You can only download the scenes themselves.

^ We disagree on a great deal.
The "cheaper" part has to do with me, the consumer.
It's cheaper for me to just buy the physical media, than to buy memberships, download, process, store, etc. files from the internet.
Of course, your time may be worth absolutely nothing to you.
And, perhaps, you don't mind tying-up your computer as a glorified porn editing bay.
Internet content and downloads have their place.
Physical media also has its place, and should remain part of the mix.

^ I understand where you're coming from, but I feel you're part of a pretty small minority. 99% of the people subscribing to the typical internet porn site wouldn't even know where to start editing or converting their downloaded scenes, and probably don't see any reason to, either.
Buying scenes/movies on physical media may be cheaper for you now, but I suspect the calculus would change if porn-on-DVDs turns into a pure niche market and the economies of scale of mass production get lost. Would you still desire to get your porn on physical media if they were only produced by specialty outfits and cost, say, $60 per disc?

shalalin:
Unfortunately, I fear that you may be right.  The market for physical media is currently shrinking considerably.  Like Goldstein, I too prefer physical laser disks.  I like the convenience of being able to pop the disk into my living room player, and enjoy the presentation on my big screen TV.  I don't like viewing porn with my computer, and up to this point, I haven't spent the time burning internet porn onto blank disks.
Also, I enjoy the Behind the Scenes (BTS) segments on physical media.  I don't explore the internet sites much, but I'm under the impression that the BTS segments are typically not present there.  Enhancing BTS segments may be a way for studios to boost physical media sales and improve their bottom line.  Some Directors, like Mike Quasar, have quite a reputation as a prankster and comedian in their BTS segments.  As such, they've developed a following from the BTS fans.  Perhaps traditional physical media studios should direct more attention to their BTS footage.

^ Goldstein, although very old, has never owned laser disks
What I believe we will see evolve is that, porn DVDs and Blu-ray will continue to be produced, but we will see a more selective number of titles on physical media.
There are many porn consumers that do not have the time, money or inclination to pursue porn via the internet.
There are plenty of people with no computer interest or expertise.
There are even poorer people with no computer at all (at least one where they could watch porn, not the work computer) or with older systems and internet access (say dial-up) where watching video on a computer isn't practical.
The industry cannot afford to leave the physical media dollars on the table.
It will adapt and strike a balance between internet content and access and physical media.
More than likely, this will mean that "everything" will not be available in every format.
One attraction that selling downloads of a complete movie would have for the industry would be not having to produce the physical media in the first place (thus saving those production and warehouse costs).
When the day comes that, I can download an entire DVD -- the exact full DVD and files exactly as found on the physical DVD -- and do it in a reasonable time (no more than half an hour), along with being able to download the full cover-art ready to be printed (they should even provide high-definition cover-art files, say 2-3x the size of an actual DVD cover, for people to really enjoy on their computer monitors), I would consider downloading and buying porn as an alternative to buying the physical media. But, that would still be just me.
The advantage to the consumer, of course, would be that they could get a DVD almost instantly when they have that impulse to buy and urgent "need" to get girl so-and-so up-close-and-personal ASAP :)
But, the industry will never sell unlocked full digital downloads of DVDs, as I just described, as then anyone so inclined has a perfect copy of the movie to "bootleg" if they so choose.
Of course, if you own a physical DVD, you can already "bootleg" perfect copies now
New business models will emerge -- and we haven't seen them just quite yet.

I used the phrase "laser disk", not the word "Laserdisc".  I'm not sure where you live, but the the Laserdisc format never became popular in North America, where I live.  By "laser disk", I'm referring to the two prevailing formats of media that make use of laser diode technology.  These are the "Blu-ray Disc" and "DVD" formats.

If they're that poor, then they shouldn't have the $20-$30 for a copy on physical media either.

I believe that the problem of file-sharing sites and tube sites giving away copyrighted material will be mediated substantially in the future.  Hollywood movies are a major export of the U.S.  I can't imagine that Congress will do nothing in the coming years to address the problem of piracy.  The SOPA, PIPA, and OPEN bills were being debated as recently as January of this year.

You really shouldn't be so judgmental and insulting.  Different people have different budgets.  Some people with lesser means than you might find your porn budget to be over the top.  On the other end of the spectrum, I once knew of a guy that spent thousands of dollars a month on porn.  To each his own.  Also, I often think that lashing out with insults is a sign of lesser intelligence, in response to your use of the word "idiot".

You've included "$20" in your range, which is also in the range I provided.  What exactly is it then, about my range, that you're reacting to so much?

These comps don't always have the type of content that I'm looking for.  Not all of the high-quality scenes released make it to a comp.

As far as I can tell, major studios charge a monthly rate for a subscription for access to their content.  A customer would need to sign up, where their credit card would be billed in the vicinity of $30/month.  This may be more expensive than spending $20 on a single disk, depending on how much content the customer wants from that particular studio.

I just checked out this "WhackyDVD" site you listed.  They have only the first two volumes of my favorite blow-job series, "Blow Me Sandwich".  There are currently 15 volumes in this series.  I'm not willing to wait nearly 10 years to get the latest volume.

Internet porn pretty much all the way for me now. When a years subscription to say Evil Angel costs the same as what it would cost to buy 2/3 DVD's here in the UK so it's kind of a no brainer really. Not that it's just the cost though as you've also got the bonus of downloading all new scenes in HD which is pretty much a must for me now. Also it's very rare you want to watch every scene on movie so you can just download the scenes you want.

MY response was prompted by your "If they're that poor, then they shouldn't have the $20-$30 for a copy on physical media either" remark -- which I took as "judgmental and insulting."
As I sign of "intelligence," I have concluded it is pointless to discuss this further with you.
FYI, your issues with WhackyDVD miss the point entirely.
They are not attempting to be a comprehensive retailer.
They have what they have when they have it.
Good deals at incredibly low prices.
I've picked-up titles to fill-in my collection quite often.
They probably will never have every title you want to find at any point.
They only have what the studios decide to clear-out.
So, shoot them, and castigate me for even pointing them out as a source of great physical media deals.

Really?  Why is that?  I stated, in effect, that if a person doesn't have the few hundred dollars that it would take to buy a computer and subscribe to a low-end broadband service in their home, then they "shouldn't" have the means to pay for physical media either.  I used the word "shouldn't", which implies that I don't believe that such people in unfortunate circumstances would have the means to spend money on porn.  In retrospect, I still feel that this is the case.  Such individuals probably only have the means for basic necessities.
You, on the other hand, used the word "idiot" to describe people who would spend $20-$30 on a DVD.  The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word "idiot", when used as a noun, as a word that is "usually offensive".  In addition to this academic description, I would suggest that most people would be offended if they were referred to as an "idiot".

I think you meant to write "As a sign of intelligence ..." instead.  Do you mean to imply that you are too intelligent to discuss this topic further?  If that's the case, why were you discussing this topic in the first place?  Why did you write your last post here?

I don't think so.  You've made the point that you like to buy cheap old DVDs from them, and I've made the point that I don't want cheap old content.  Am I still missing the point?

Any reasonable person can look back at my last post and clearly see that I didn't condemn this old DVD service or "castigate" you for bringing it up.  I have absolutely no idea why you've chosen to react this way.

Seriously? I don't think I've ever come across a VOD at a major retailer (Gamelink and the like) that wasn't at least a little bit cheaper than the equivalent DVD at the same site. To say nothing of subscription models such as those offered by Zero Tolerance or Evil Angel which are vastly cheaper with almost any usage pattern. (Save for "I only want that one movie", but that's what VOD is for.)
That hardly speaks in favour of the health of the DVD market... Arguing that DVDs are a necessary option to have around because lack of demand is often causing them to be available as dirt cheap overstock right now is a bit circular.

From what I've seen, most newly released online porn is available in 720p and even 1080p on sites like Brazzers. In terms of resolution, that's all you're going to need. And, even with a crappy connection, it's amazing how quickly you can download a one or two gigabyte hi-def scene. Quality plus speed spells the demise of DVDs, at least with regards to porn. You can scream bloody murder all you want but this is the way of the world. Celluloid gave way to magnetic tape, then nickel plated discs and now bits of data streaming through the airwaves.

If you look at pricing of DRM-free "download to own", it is always more expensive than the physical DVD. The time-limited streaming VOD (with DRM) might be cheaper than DVD, but it is not a valid comparison, because of the expiration date and the crippling DRM.
