I pose the question to all here. Is it so wrong to be a porn fan? I ask because of something that happens sometimes when I discuss porn with the guys. Sometimes, when conversations arise, things get a little raunchy, and yup, talk turns to porn, porn stars, movies, sex acts, whatever. Anyway, guys like to give me crap about my "above average" knowledge of movies, stars names, what scenes they're in, you know. I usually tell them that it really isn't any different than mainstreet movies or any form of entertainment for that matter. You know actors names and what movies they're in, there are certain actors or actressess careers you follow etc, etc. So, just because you follow or know more than the average person doesn't make you an addict, pervert, weirdo, or anything like that. I am a porn fan. Simple as that...
True. It's funny because it's not like my buddies never watch it. As far as being taboo, it seems to be more acceptable now than it used to be. But not many people announce the fact that they enjoy adult entertainment.
The internet makes it possible for casual porn viewers to get a heaping helping of porn with zero knowledge of who or what they're watching. So, yes, it is unusual to have an "above average" level of porn knowledge. But unusual doesn't make you weird.
OP- I too am a completely unapologetic fan of porn. For more than 20 years, I have been a porn collector, and like any pursuit that I enjoy, I want to know as much as I can about it. I find it rather amusing that some of my buddies think its crazy to have an extensive knowledge and collection of porn, but when they want to find out about a starlet, or see a particular act, I'm always the first one they ask. I find porn knowledge to be no different than having an intimate knowledge and recall of baseball stats...

This is true but at the same time anyone who is interested in finding out more will have no trouble finding out way more about porn past and present than was true pre-internet, in a fairly short amount of time. Fans today know far more about their favourite directors and performers than anytime in the past, and the amount of info on the classic era is way more extensive than was available even when the films were getting made.

Straight guys don't discuss porn. It just doesn't happen, and I've been around a long time.
It only matters if you care. Some people are just stupid and will believe any half-baked bullshit they see on TV. Obviously, I don't think there's anything wrong with being a porn fan but then I don't go out of my way to judge people who haven't given me any reason to.
In a country that is obsessed with war and serial killers; where John Wayne Gacy paintings are the accoutrements of the rich and hip; where teenagers wear shirts extolling the virtues of Charles Manson; where sem-literate bimbos become famous for being pissed on, I see nothing wrong with being a passionate fan of porn. This is, after all, the most vulgar nation on earth, where 25% of the children live in poverty, which has the highest rate of incarceration on the planet. Porn is the least of its problems. I am offended by people who are fans of Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.
Guys I work around are blue collar. All they talk about is sex. Who they would like to do how they would do it and how they bang their wife or girlfriend. They also talk about porn being creepy. I on the other hand like watching porn but never bring up having sex with my wife or past relationships. So in conclusion my co-workers think I am a prude. Kinda funny ha.
Yeah, it's something I keep to myself for the most part. It's not something I go around announcing. I think most people are that way. I do think it is kind of hypocritical that society sees it the way it does when you got stuff on TV nowadays (reality shows mainly) that are pretty exploitive and just bad in general.

Well it's not 1987 anymore, I don't think any of those things are considered hip, but I know what you're saying.

All depends on how you discuss it. Watching porn and being a porn fan are two way different things. Being on a fishing trip with a bunch of guys and bringing out a sample dvd that you picked up at AEE in Vegas of a prolapsing cumfart is completely different than saying, "Hey guys, let's discuss the subtle nuances that the director was going for as that drop of baby batter clings to the prolapse!" As much as I like watching porn, the last thing I'm ever going to do is want to sit around and discuss it with friends like a bunch of women in a book club. Hence, this site.
There's nothing wrong with being a fan of porn. There are so many things in the world that's much, much worse. Sure, I'm not going to tell everyone I know that I'm a fan of porn, but I'm not gonna deny it either. Being a fan of porn actually means you support the people who are in the industry. I doubt many actors in the mainstream movie industry cares that much about the fans as long as they get paid $10-15mill pr. movie.
ironic isn't it. I dated a girl who despised porn. Asked why anyone would ever want to watch it. I always got the "you like this stuff" type of response. The irony is everytime some sadistic horror movie came out she was like "I can't wait to see that" I'm not talking Friday the 13th. I'm talking Hostel, Saw 1-100, Human Centipede, Anti-Christ, any movie that was morbid, stomach turning, torture induced etc was added to her Netflix queue but oh My Daughter is fucking Blackzilla is disgusting and perverted.
I think a lot of people, women in particular, still believe that the women who do porn have been abducted and forced to perform through a combination of fear, mind control and drugs. And I'm not joking. They also think that the women who do porn are cracked-out scuzzballs with track marks on their arms. So when you say that you are a fan of porn, that's the image and scenario that comes to mind. It's hard to convince them otherwise. My wife kind of gets it, though. I accidentally left up a clip of Miley Ann doing her thing, and my wife, while not pleased that she caught a climpse of a 20 year old girl taking a cumshot in her mouth, said to me, You just like watching pretty girls have sex, don't you? And I said, Yep, that's all it is (for me at least; I like vanilla porn). It's pretty girls having sex.
The problem is that until people start lightening up a bit, things are going to stay exactly the way they are and being a "secret" porn fan is always going to make some people feel a little sleazy. The reality is that it really shouldn't. There probably isn't much that goes on in the typical porn flick that hasn't crossed the mind of the average guy while he was stroking it at one time or another. The anal prolapse is obviously a pretty extreme example. I've rarely, if ever, seen a prolapse by accident. Though I suppose it might get more common with pornographers looking for different things. Even the "cumfart" is something you generally have to be looking for. The typical American porn flick is pretty pedestrian as far as the range of "activities" covered. well despite it's money making ability and higher profile, porn really does still have a negative image to it. Porn may indeed be viewed as much as mainstream, but people simply don't see them as the same. To be honest though, I don't really have any need to discuss porn with others outside the internet.

Yup yup and yup....I can't stand overly graphic horror movies. They disgust me and freak me out. Minds that write and produce such materials are more twisted than 90% of porn directors. I'm lucky that my long time gf loves porn and knows the talent is doing what they like to do. My gf would prob be in porn if we weren't on the east coast. Point is hollywood is producing way more fucked up shit in theory than the world of porn. I would rather watch a movie with prolapse (which I am not a fan of) than 5 minutes of that saw torture bullshit.
I would not watch any of those films if a gun was pointed at my head. Especially Human Centipede. When you look around, there's very little real art being produced anymore. Well, back up, maybe not less, but it seems to be outnumbered by junk. The torture movies, the romantic-comedies, (which are usually neither), the reality shows, the talk shows, the cooking shows, the dating shows, the remodeling-your-now-worthless-underwater-home shows, the terrible thumping "pop music" that the kids listen to -- I lump them all in the same boat. It's all disposable fast-food crap. Porn is more honest than all that shit. But I think porn gets such a bad rap because of what's associated with it; masturbation. This society still has a hang-up about anybody who faps off, especially if they're over the age of 18. They believe there must be some mental sickness or hatred of women involved.

Just out of curiosity, on what planet do you live? People start lightening up? Huh? So what you're saying is that that the whole country should lighten up and embrace general porn talk at work. Just because we think something or see something in porn doesn't mean we should mention it out loud. Where exactly do you propose the line be drawn? 12? 13? 17? 18? By lightening up, do you mean that the next time I see a hot little 18 year old at work, I should say to her, "you know, there's a hot 18 year old porn girl who reminds me of you named XYZ that was airtight with a bunch of black guys, is that something you'd do? Or hey, want to come over and watch the scene together?" And do you think that when her father comes after me with a shotgun that the comment of "dude you really need to lighten up because all the girls in porn are going airtight" is going to stop him from decorating the wall with my brains? What happens when someone starts propositioning a young relative in your family? And save the whole, "I don't have any young relatives, but if I did I'd be okay with it" line. A non porn example that's been documented numerous times is the whole Death Penalty debate. Most anti death penalty advocates quickly go from Anti to Pro the minute a violent crime hits one of their loved ones, I'm sure you'd be no different, whether its a Teen line, a MILF line, or a GrandMilf line.

I think most people are like that. I don't think that the person you were quoting was saying that everyone should just start having conversations about porn and sex at work or anywhere else. As far as talking about it with "the guys", I think it is pretty normal for a bunch of dudes to BS about it sometimes. Not any deep, indepth conversations about porn or sex, just BULLSHIT. If your daughter or sister or other close female relative was getting married and you found out that her husband-to-be had a secret stash of over 1000 porn DVDs that she didn't know about, would you have a negative reaction?
And that's about as deep as any porn conversation ever got between me and my co-workers. Porn is mostly a masturbation aid, whether most people care to admit it or not, so most people simply aren't gonna talk at length about it. Now I do work with a guy who I can talk/joke about porn a little with, but we talk much more indepth about the mainstream tv shows or films we both like. Just much more to actually talk about. Hell I don't always find it easy to talk indepth about porn here, although I can clearly can.
Would I have a negative reaction because he had a large porn collection? No. Would I have a negative reaction because his fiance didn't know about it? Yes, but I would have the same reaction if he was keeping a large collection of anything else secret. If it is that important to you then your partner should probably know about it.

They discussed this on a short lived sitcom one time. It was a couple of guys and girls chatting and I forget the term they used, but basically the best friend immediately upon hearing of the death of his friend, rushes over to the house and cleans out his porn stash. The girls on the sitcom says, "That's very nice of you to throw his porn away before his family discovers it." Both guys look at her and at the same time say, "Who said anything about throwing it away?"

Yeah I remember that lol...can't remember the show. My gay cousin has more porn than some adult stores...I'm that guy for him so the rest of our family doesn't find out about his collection. Haha
True, I believe most people aren't going to talk at length about their porn watching, but I don't really agree with the first part of this statement. Do people use porn as a masturbation or marital aid? Sure. But some just enjoy watching it for various reasons.
I would have a negative reaction if I found out some close female acquaintance or relative of mind was marrying a man who didn't like porn. I hate prudish people and I definitely don't trust them. I would wonder what the hell is wrong with a guy who doesn't like porn. As far as the girl not knowing about it, that has nothing to do with the guy being a porn fan and everything to do with his expectation or fear of her reaction. IOW, it's not about the porn. It's about the way society is prejudiced against it. His keeping it from her is not good but it's understandable. It's not his fault society has a diseased way of thinking about sexuality. He should be able to tell her about it and not worry that she's going to flip out. Edited by - randomprecision on 12/16/2010 12:02:25 AM
What I'm saying is that it probably shouldn't be a mortal sin to mention or make some reference to porn to a coworker. Most people wouldn't have a prolonged discussion about it but most people don't have prolonged discussions about anything from their private life with their coworkers. In general, there are a lot of things you can't do at work. There's nothing wrong with getting drunk but you can't do it at work. I just meant that people need to lighten up a bit and not act like a bunch of morons if they find out you watch porn. Most people masturbate and most people have "dirty" fantasies. Humans have had many thousands of years to act like idiots over sex and pretend they don't do it and would have never thought of a blowjob in a milliion years. Maybe it's time to grow up a bit?
Nor do I see any real reason why we absolutely shouldn't. I generally keep my sexual thoughts to myself. If someone just pipes up and unexpectedly says something sexual, I'm just like "whatever dude". I've had it happen. I've never been scarred by it. I've been far more offended by people just generally being assholes when I didn't do or say anything to them.
That's a strawman, I think. By lightening up, I mean exactly what I said. There's nothing wrong with being a porn fan and people shouldn't feel like pariahs if others know it. Pretty much everyone watches at least a little porn. You're not a leper. You're just a dude with a normal sex drive. Obviously, there have been some bad people who probably had a porn collection. So what? There have been some bad people who didn't have any porn at all. Why do we not associate not having porn with being some kind of creep?
Some people equate sex with murder. I'm afraid I can't really identify with that line of thinking. I have a lot of relatives. Some of them are female. Most of them have had lots of sex. I don't care. As long as it was all consensual. They're my relatives. Not my property. And again, as other have pointed out, people actually go to the theater with hundreds of other people so they can be titillated by watching blood and gore. It isn't even something people try to hide. Not that I'm necessarily judging them but how can being a porn fan possibly be any worse than psychologically getting off on graphic depictions of murder? Edited by - randomprecision on 12/16/2010 12:49:36 AM
Isn't it funny, according to the pots above.... Most of us don't like to talk to our friends and work mates about porn Yet we all like to talk about it on the internet. I wonder if we are talking to our mates on the net ? or our boss ? or his wife ? or our Dad ?
i've got a couple of friends with whom i can discuss freely about porn knowledge. i think i could do that with pretty much everyone, but i happen to know that most of my friends aren't that "deeply" into porn as i am.
I remember reading a Sarah Silverman interview where she had several male friends who had massive porn collections and she agreed to clear out their porn rooms so their parents wouldn't find it and be embarassed. But as Dan Savage wrote about this very issue: "why should you care, you'll be dead"
I've shared my porn preferences with colleagues by and by. With some of my closer female friends, the topic of 'Pirates' randomly came up and I happened to own Pirates and Pirates II. They were down for a viewing party, and nothing else came of it. I don't think they think any differently of me. Other than that, I had older friends in college who would give me porn, and later IM it to me. Right now, I have a best friend that feels pretty comfortable sharing porn over the 'net though last time he mentioned that I probably know too much. I don't think anything of it. I'm not ashamed to be a pron fan, but if Dad knew what I doing with the trust fund money, I might not hear the end of it.

It'd be a mortal sin real quick for you if you brought up your porn talk with my 14 year old niece as you seem to be advocating, regardless of whether she's sexually active or not. Another question is why do you feel the need to bring up porn talk and spanking it off in general conversation? It's one thing to mention going to AEE while you're in Vegas, as I've mentioned it in conversations in the past, and I've put together a five minute bit that has people in stitches, but then again I was working the convention, compared to last night's spank off session.

Well, yeah, but we're all talking about it with others who are fans and all hiding behind nom de plumes, where as I have much more interesting things to say to my friends than debating whether double anal is gay or not.

I cant see how porn is healthy to be honest, especially now the internet makes it so easy to access. For one thing so many people get addicted to it, I myself have had periods where I have wasted far too much time on it. Some people choose porn over the real thing, which cant be good Young people expect girls to do the freaky shit that happens in porn. If I saw the more extreme stuff that’s around now when I was a kid I’d be interested in my reaction, I remember getting excited at seeing a nipple, now kids can log on and see girls gaping licking tonguing a guys ass. I can list a ton of negatives but it is what it is. If controlled and used properly I guess it serves a purpose but if not it can be a problem. To say it’s a good things is a bit deluded, yeah incredibly fun, but that kind of fun always has a price.
