Make your computer more sluggish?
I can't tell.
I have a web cam (it's is a decent model Logitech incase that matters, I imagine it consumes a bit of power), an mp3 player, a still camera and a USB mouse?
Is it bullshit or should I unplug my stuff if I want the machine to work faster.
Obviously unplugging the mouse is out of the question, unless ps/2 is faster, I don't know.
And the web cam is not possible either because it makes me go through an insanely long re-install process whenever I remove it.
AM I just being paranoid and over-reacting to advice on hardware forums?

I don't know but I have many things connected via USB (I have like 7 ports) and I haven't noticed any sluggishness.

I have 4 ports.
Have you tried taking the non-essential ones out and seeing if it is faster?
Vista may be a different beast. I use XP home edition.

A power issue wouldn't make your computer sluggish. It's not like a lawnmower running into tall grass.
Those devices could be competing for resources, though, and slowing things down. If the webcam is on all the time, and if you're running some software approximating iTunes w/ your mp3 player those could be hogging resources. If you are treating the camera and mp3 player as storage devices they won't harm a thing.

Just to clarify, the amount of power being consumed by your attached peripherals has absolutely nothing to do with the speed that your computer runs at. You could have a 1.2 gigawatt flux capacitor powering your computer and it will not run any faster.
Maybe you could plug it into a 220 volt outlet though. That will speed it up 2x.

Bornyo was trying to tell you that it is the issue of the memory and processing time consumed by any programs/processes related to your connected perhipherals, not power consumption. If nothing related to your USB ports is running, then it isn't slowing your system down.
