Thanks for all the journal articles, I look forward to sifting through them.
There is a big debate gearing up in the US about whether porn should be considered a public health problem. It has been easy to point to the lack of pornography addiction as a diagnosis in the DSM-V in years past, but this is no longer such a sure defense. My latest read on the situation suggests that the medical community, including the people who will draft the DSM-VI, are near evenly split on whether pornography should be treated as a public health issue.
Politics have been a major factor in stirring up this debate. Utah, Arkansas, and South Dakota have all passed resolutions deeming pornography to be a public health crisis. These state legislatures have not waited for the scientific verdict to be in. Supporters of these resolutions do not seem to have a real interest in seeing this scientific debate played out, instead they have attempted to legislate the fact that porn is a public health crisis, when that fact is far from certain.
One of the real issues is that pornography is widely perceived as a vice. Society has had various ways of dealing with its vices over history. In many eras of history, vices were most widely viewed as fundamentally evil - as transgressions against god. In the 20th century, that obviously continued, but there was a trend towards viewing vices as fundamentally criminal - as transgressions against society and our fellow men and women. More recently, from the 20th century up to the present, there has been a trend to medicalize our vices - to attribute them to psychological or biological causes.
There has also been a trend for the government to utilize the public health model to intervene in areas of society not traditionally considered health related. Consider the controversial issue of gun control. It is an issue of public safety, but does public safety equate to public health, and should physicians therefore play a role in screening for firearms in the home? Whatever you think about these questions, it is obvious to me that the definition of public health is being stretched beyond its traditional meaning. I believe the same to be true for porn. People want to cast it as a public health issue because they believe it to be a vice.
It is so ingrained in our society to think of porn as a vice, that it shapes the entire debate from both sides. Like the other things that we tend to consider vices, such as alcohol and gambling, there is a tendency to think about it as harmful at worst or neutral at best. Our society is debating whether porn is harmful or not. How about we instead talk about the degree to which it can be both beneficial and worthwhile? I would not give back a minute of my life that I spent on porn, I truly enjoyed all of it. It has not derailed my happy marriage or career. Porn is a totally valid way to spend our time - we need to get beyond thinking of it as a vice.

Aside that there's no reference whatsoever about the exposition those are after how many years of drug use , or porn use or Videogames use?
I think you would agree that after a year of exposition you wouldn't have the same effect as after ten years for example , and even so the amount of exposition per year is as important one hour per week is different from one our per month

I don't know whether porn addiction exists or not. That's for people smarter than me to figure out. I know in the 20 plus years since I picked up my first porn TAPE, I've watched porn almost everyday. Right now I'm making a go at trying to give it a rest. After a handful of days I can feel it knawing at me the same way I'd feel if I was on a diet and cutting out foods. It's really hard. My record is 12 days. Back when I just had tapes, it was something I did regularly but nothing like having porn on my phone. I used to need to be at work at 4am and I'd stay up until 1am looking at various sites. It may not be addictive but it's drained me of time and energy. From walking across town in the rain to return a tape to not getting sleep I'll admit I haven't handled it well. Just me. If it's a hobby like video games or sports then that's cool. It was way too big a chunk of my life.

^addition can be a word used on a lot of things. People can be addicted to anything, right? There is a chemical addiction like drugs and booze and so forth. But things are also emotional. If you are watching so much porn that you are up all night and being late for work, avoiding friends, taking sick days from work, etc etc.. then that can qualify as some sort of addictive behavior. That can apply to video games, or anything else really. If anything is taking preference and damaging other areas of life, there i addictive behavior at play.

I listen to audiobooks every day. I find they relax me and make my work easier/more interesting. If I leave for work and have forgotten my ipod, I turn around and go back to get it. My husband gets annoyed that I am always listening to books while doing chores. He feels like I am blocking him out. Am I suffering from an addiction?

^If you have to go back than I suspect you have an addiction because by your own admission you need your ipod. That said I don't know if all addictions are necessarily a bad thing but I think they become one if you are unwilling to admit that you have an addiction. I'm addicted to caffeine. I have to have at least one cup of coffee in the morning or I will suffer the various consequences during the day. The good news is that I don't have to drink more than one cup. The news isn't as good for sugar because I ingest way more than is wise or healthy and I don't think I can stop. All I hope is that I can reduce my intake.
P.S: Not to pry into your personal life so this is a question that you only need to answer to yourself. Do you think your husband may be right when he says that you use audio books to tune him out?

^ Lol. No, I don't use audiobooks to tune him out. I use them to make folding laundry and washing dishes more interesting when no one is around.
Luckily now if I forget my ipod I can listen to my books on my phone so I don't have to turn around and go back. Hooray for the Audible app. Wait, I mean the Audible app is promoting book addiction and must be stopped.

Addiction can't be that bad when it's coming down to porn, was I hooked on heroine I'd not been such a happy camper I believe, oh no. There's an old fellow one block away that every night stands outside his frontdoor porch brushing his back and dusting porch and looking to be taking care of his plastic plants in some pot he much rather should let someone piss in, looking another direction passing by. He never have any lights inside his place because he probly has gone insane in some fashion. I can assume he never watch no porn, niente, having the straightest of point blank track records of no visits in any circumstance in the field of bare naked ladies. He's a straight stand up non-abuser of nothing but time itself, I believe. And he just go on a wasting programme it seems.
I rather chose heavy porn addiction over his sorry ass stategies, I'll tell you that. In winter he goes outside without any clothes except from a trouser drying his back, as if he's sweating out of much to heavy excercise now. His round belly suggest wrong answer.
I'd rather be sweating way too much because of being into the third hour of DVD-porn, switching inbetween orgies and reversse gang bangs, nailing for some happy ending.

Regarding books, though, it's interesting that when the novel became popular people fretted over how it affected young people and women. The attitude toward novel consumption was similar to how people view porn consumption--being immersed in a solitary activity that removes you from society, escaping into a dangerous fantasy space that blends reality and fiction, etc. Now we want young people to read more books.

I like that reference, really do. Such reading could be the only access and source to arousal I believe in way too many cases. When colour-TV came by there were these people in politics, religious types, stating that the devil had come to town now, reaching every appartment. Yeah, why not surrender and go with the flow.

LPee post: "There is a big debate gearing up in the US about whether porn should be considered a public health problem." It's definitely a growing public health problem.
I happened to read an article by Benjamin Wiker, PhD related to this today (excerpts):
The cycle of addiction leads to further destruction of our sexuality and sexual environment. The first kind of destruction is social, or rather, it strikes at the very heart of the social order: marriage. The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the top 1600 lawyers dealing with divorce, report that 56% of divorces they deal with are the result of a spouse's obsession with porn. If human marital love is the perfection of our sexual nature, then this is decidedly destructive and unnatural result. As sociologists and psychologist attest, destroyed families are a leading source of every kind of social disorder and pathology.
As sociologist and researcher Dr. Natalie Purcell has shown, porn movies over the last forty years have become increasingly violent and misogynist, with women being choked, suffocated, dragged by the hair, gang raped, slapped, punched, gagged through oral sex to the point of vomiting, and humiliated in other ways such as variations of anal intercourse. The women either pretend to love it, the more abusive the better, or the women are shown actually suffering in their painful humiliation as real rape victims, both of which are meant to "turn on" porn addicts seeking new highs, both of which form the brains of porn viewers to associate their own sexual satisfaction with brutal and unnatural violations of women.
All of this, we now understand, "re-wires" the brain's pleasure system in regard to sexual desire, literally twisting natural sexual desire into ever-more unnatural and self-destructive addictions. For the sexually malformed, only the unnatural is desirable. That's the result of what addiction scientists call "tolerance," the above-mentioned dulling down of the brain's pleasure circuits, and the consequent need for ever greater stimulation.
Moral destruction. The "tolerance" caused by dulling down the brain's pleasure circuits causes ever-widening sexual "tolerance" in society. As the increasingly unnatural porn spreads throughout society, affecting more and more men and women, the sexually unnatural is normalized socially, as in radically redefining the sexual desires and hence the sexual morality of society. With anal sex the new "high" among, and the porn-addicted getting ever younger, is it a really a shock that young teenage girls now routinely complain of being forced to "perform" accordingly? With rape as the new turn-on, is it any wonder that young men increasingly associate sex with violence?
Psychological and physical destruction. The number of porn addicted is so large, that the afflicted have started therapeutic chat sites for those trying to shake the addiction. Deleterious symptoms: along with ED, they experience irritability, fatigue, sleeplessness, trembling, inability to focus or concentrate, depression, completely deadened sexual desire for an actual person of the opposite sex, completely dead libido period, significant social awkwardness, loss of job or flunking in school, development of ever-more alarming sexual tastes, panic attacks, memory impairment, and thoughts of suicide. As the conversation among recovering porn addicts makes clear, they realized that the symptoms were porn-caused because the ill effects went away after they quit.

Bad porn and the consumption of it probably should be DOOMED. Quality should never be. It's about mankinds best steps in going forward. So to be selling out ideas and things that will undermine quality should be put in the books of ongoing criminal acts.

The best way to keep quality within my reach, is hardware. Not some fucking membership in some society somewhere, using VISA, being told to pay and just having to keep up jerking about it, feeling the pressure of doing so and all of a sudden taking heat when computer collapses.

How about drinking too much? Eating too much crap? Living under stressfull conditions? Loud traffic jam outside? Horns all the time?
To be horny and do something about it and be satisfied and drink a little, yes, that could probably be a positive outcome doing society a favor too if you did your maths. And to go by philosophy, Nietzche built a school that told such people you're referring to go fuck themselves. In fact I watched a TV-programme dealing with Marx and him pluss Einstein. They all got a lot of fans. Friedrich's final book before he went crazy due to some STD was all about taking Dionysos under his wings and saluting the greek god of sex, drugs and rock and roll for proving some good meaning in life. I guess german philosoher invented rockandroll long before Chuck Berry took it to some stage. Point being that if you take away these things, porn being a part of that stage, life no longer will be that meaningful for certain individuals of today's society, having already experienced Dionysos live in show. You cannot just sit and watch football all day being told what the fuck to do as soon as you move on. And I don't say that every one out there can just hit that vibe. But for quite some that's a vibe they need for staying sane, finding meaning and so on. You just cannot fuck with folks beliefs. And since ancient times things have moved on. I so find Nietsche pulling Dionysos back in the game like no one else except from some late rockstars to be more online for people of todays society and their needs than all these old religion things saying no to everything except suffering, creating just bad vibes all over the place.

I'm 7 days porn free. Well... except for this site. That's an extra two or three hours a day I have for something else. For me, giving it a rest is a good thing. Just me.
I used to look at it before bed and sometimes, before I went to work. I'd get two hours sleep. Maybe I was an extreme case. I never thought of that.

Well my belief is if it is affecting relationships, that is a sign of addictive behavior. Whether someone defines it that way or not is for an expert. But if hubby is feeling blocked, i think it is worth a discussion.

I had a phase in life like that. When I was able to start downloading scenes and not having to wait for stuff to show up in the mail or go to a store; it was like "one more scene before bed!," and then before I know it, its 4am and I have to be up at 7 for work. That is unhealthy with all the lack of sleep and such (and that led to less working out and a shitty eating habit), but as with anything balance can be found. I get in my porn time, my sex in the real world time, and business and friendships. But there was that one year when I was so enthralled with the easy access that it consumed me. It certainly was addictive behavior.

I think your relationship status plays a big part. I'm single and have been for several years. At my worst, porn is the only relationship I have. Hard to give that up. When I've been dating someone I hardly looked at the stuff. No interest. When it's all you have, it's easy to obsess on it.

All is a big word, put a C in front, and my gratitude plays a part.
This finds different ways. Rock and roll foraninstance.
Like in this Protection-song I call out for over at fucking Trump Watch society thread, full of anxiety and bad vibes in general development. I took it in word by word untill last verse just to deal with the outside world, played off some old cassette once received from a long gone distant fellow of mine, having been to over a hundred shows.
Protection (song written by Bruce Springsteen given to Donna Summer)
Night after night I keep holding on
You say you love me then you leave me so lonely
I don't believe a single thing in what you're sayin'
I also think it's an evil game that you're playin'
Still I belong and all I do is think about you
You got me believin' that I can't live without you
Well if you want it
Here's my confession
Well I can't help it
This all night obsession
Protection
That's what I need
I want protection
Baby from your love
Protection
That's what I need
I want protection
Baby from your love
The phone rings
In the middle of the night
When I pick it up
You won't answer
Knock on the door
I run down the stairs
When I open
there's no one there
Out in the darkness
I feel your eyes on me
I lay in bed feeling your hands upon me
Well is it all just my imagination
You keep me in doubt
Believin' I can't live
without your protction

"Youself", kinda brilliant, don't you think. No, I didn't think so. I just go there, and when I go there, I chose to go... Go with the flow, and when I get there, having nothing to complain about, setting me free, setting you free, even setting everything around you free, just for a while, then I will not complain about going to shows, setting everything free. Redeemed.

We are miles apart on this issue, and you are entitled to your opinions.
You do realize that calling porn a public health issue is not just acknowledging that it can be harmful for some people. The government takes action on public health issues. So you believe that the government should be more involved in regulating our porn - made and watched by consenting adults - to protect us from ourselves?

Yeah, let's discuss the DOOMED theory a bit. What is really the issue here? Some outside force? The one that never comes around. I guess it's further down that line somewhere. That's a line you draw for yourself. If someone draws that line for you, take it with The Beatles, and just let it be.

I decided to take a break from watching porn, its getting you nowhere in the end. You cannot implement the things you see in those movies, its only a fantasy. I also consider todays porn to be sleazy, its not like in the old days, a lot of decent names have quit or passed away. I also read a lot about girls getting abused on set and directors getting away with it. No more man, no more. There was a time I functioned without watching porn lol.

Me I try to implement nothing, oh no. I do have an assosciate though, he's a fucking Michael Jackson fan still, kinda die hard, abusing a lot of pills and talking to me in the telephone. I visited him once. His AWE was long gone, but I wasn't any shocked as I sat there by, sofa had a bump, taking a beat from a degenerate gambler weighing way too much, they used to watch football each and every Wednesday, Champions Leauge, kinda big deal, lifting my friend up financially, offering some pizza up front right away, I sat there in a bump, he wore like a Bayern Munich suit or something, had to be told that this was it: Fucking Moonwalk.
He kinda went along.
But no way, that wasn't it. And neither is this.
I even got this friend being in posession of some Adolf Hitler mask. Ii used to scare the shit out of me on occasion. These are the things that should be doomed. Not some flying fucks doing no fucking harm, not even laying any eggs.

Being addicted to porn is nothing to be proud of, it opens the way to sexual frustration and a lot of other things, like seeing a pornstar in every girl you encounter, its not healthy. There was a time I would not jerk off for months, the moment you have an orgasm, it is gonna be better.

I think what you said is real. But the main question is: why does the porn indutry pay performers less than 10/12 years ago? I think because all the Western world is going to be less rich. Poverty is on the rise everywhere in Europe and North America and I think (I hope I'm a bad clairvoyant...) is gonna get worse within 10/20 years.
A little amount of people has money to buy porn. That's why I agree with you: in 20 years porn industry will cease to exist or will be a niche market (for rich only in other words...)

In the 80s & 90s I bought a lot of VHS tapes just based on a pretty cover.
Then found out the tape was junk, and I would go buy another title.
I'm guessing that was a huge profit driver for the industry back then.

^ Certainly any fan who porned in the VHS days will have experienced the box cover bait and switch.
They big revolution however is not so much the change of medium (to online/digital), though living only a one-mouse-click degree of separation from a fuckton of porn is something of a seismic shift, but more the evolution of online communities of porn fans who share reviews, information and insights.
A major reason why porn studios desist from their instinctive spurious marketing practices is that the fans talk to each other and utter crap is exposed for what it is (though this site, being a moderated oasis of pleasantness as well as a sanctuary for industry fanboys, is less scathing than it could, or should, be). If the major players could still get away with sketchy behaviours, they would.
Porn as a spectated performance may be doomed in the future when we can all jack into a sex network and jack-off interactively with a holographically rendered fantasy performer, but until that day, live action videography will rule the roost. Nevertheless, the 'industry', per the OP, and as we currently know it, may well be doomed as I write.
With the talent starting taking over from the old men in deciding how they are going to manage their careers (Riley Reid and Angela White being the most obvious examples), and having the digital and social media tools available to make it so, we may be nearing the end of creepy neck beard rip-off artists clipping the porn ticket. Woo hoo.

I like porn, I take breaks every now and then but the release of it all (shit that wasn't the best phrase to use but w/e) is calming. I'd say porn addiction would be going into the work toilets and having a quick fap during the day because you can't do without porn for long periods. If you do that, you nay wish to seek help or start to slowly break away a bit from it.
The porn industry isn't doomed, it just has a few monopolies that tend to control most sites which isn't ideal. Quality porn will never die as there are people who will always pay for a quality product.
Mass porn is trending and the amount of women doing it now also makes it harder for new women to make a career or a 1-3 year stint out of it. There are always negative points to be made in any industry as it is never perfect.

excessive porn-watching is a habit, and a psychological addiction, but not a physical one.

I get all of the music I want right off of youtube. Not hard to find pretty much all of the music you'd ever want to hear, I think.

^great, but to get that all in your phone music player, is a lot of work if you want access to any song anytime. Most young people are getting into the subscription services. It is now "old school" to buy individual songs from itunes like I do :)
The music industry recovered a lot of their lost money by offering these types of things. Pay per song and now streaming everything.
Sitting at home and pirating tons of songs is a lot of work and for 10 bucks a month it is a good trade off for a lot of people; especially young adults who want to be out and about and have everything at their finger tips on their phone.

pornography wasn't sex but fantasies of an impossibly hospitable world

The quality of the sound on Youtube is atrocious. It's okay for listening to over computer speakers at work but through any decent sound system sounds like crap. The kps is usually very low.
