Goldstein, I could not disagree more. All forms of the US IP law are equally abused. Copyright and patent laws serve a valuable role, but have been turned on their head. Originally intended to protect the "little guy" from the wealthy and powerful, the laws are now used to bully and extort. As an entrepreneur and technologist I know this first hand. The US system is broken all the way down to a patent office that is understaffed and so underfunded that it depends on the money it collects from issuing patents -- a perverse incentive. We need tort reform and Congress, a bunch of lawyers, is unwilling act. Sorry for the rant, but it pisses me off that my industry wastes so much money on lawyers rather than on productivity. No wonder our economy is in the toilet.
^ Awesome for your contribution - good on you for having 'that conversation'. You'd think some of the high post count regular 'contributors' would be stumping up the $30, but I guess some people are financially straitened. Or they're the <$30 anonymous supporters and want to keep it that way - every little bit helps. Anyway, just sayin'. Edited by - Sexy Sadie on 3/29/2016 1:44:05 AM
Nice of Jules to provide some advice. I hope a judge summarily dismisses this. It seems like a dumb allegation. In what way would ADT profit off of random users uploading the occasional pic on here, when all the discussions lead directly to the source of the pics? This place is dedicated to supporting porn companies. And on the forums, if people see a hot pic and ask "What movie is that from?" or "What are these sneak peaks of?" that only generates interest for the producing company. What could be more industry friendly?

There are 3 things I care a lot about (1) security/privacy, (2) IP tort reform, and (3) technology. Obviously family and shit comes way before that stuff. Anyway, my desire for privacy/anonymity almost prevented me from donating. For one, Drew and Steph now have access to more information about me than anyone I know -- they are the only ones that can link my actual identity to one of my Twitter accounts and my home address. I was not thrilled with being required to fill in a lot of that information as part of the donation process. I got over it because I feel passionately about what they're dealing with, can empathize, and suspect that I can trust them as I doubt they actually give a shit about who I actually am. That said, I could see a lot of people not wanting a linkage. Perhaps there is an alternative way to donate more anonymously.
^Money order / U.S. Mail Use stencils to disguise handwriting / Don't lick the stamp so as to minimize DNA evidence / Check for hairs and skin flakes (same reason) / Handle all with gloves Mail far from home ; if multiple donations are made, use different post boxes in different directions, though don't create a circle of locations about your home / Use a discretely located box(es) so as to minimize camera exposure / wear hat and sunglasses

It's true. We don't give a shit who you are outside of ADT :) All personal info will be ignored entirely except to those we're shipping t-shirts (and post shipping we'll forget/lose the info.) We tried to find a means of anonymous donations but it's not possible using these quick set up options. You don't have to enter your address. It appears that some people are and some aren't. Maybe it's tied to paypal versus wepay? I'm not sure. ------------------------------ BLACKED.com and TUSHY.com are official ADT Heroes! These guys have been sponsors since they launched, a pleasure to work with, and just increased their sponsorship to help us defend ADT. It's clear our audience loves their work. Please show 'em some support (and maybe we won't have another sweatergate ;) Edited by - Janitor on 3/29/2016 4:02:32 PM
Yeah, we've tried that before and decided that it is not as much fun as we anticipated. The uncomfortable part was not that I watch porn, but the fact that I'm part of an online community that celebrates it. She has her porn (erotic novels and such) and I have mine; our vices do have a positive impact on our sex life and keep things fun and interesting. I'd post pictures and videos but like you, I cannot afford the legal expenses (divorce). Too soon?Whew. Although, I was half expecting something like "You're right, Lucas Jackson, we don't give a shit who you are IRL." And for the record, I'd love it if my name were actually Lucas Jackson and I looked like Paul Newman. Edited by - coolhand on 3/29/2016 7:04:53 PM

Thanks for posting, very informative. And, oh yeah, thanks to Drew for doing the Q&A. After reading that article, would I be going out on a limb in assuming that the source of the pics in question was the What non-Porn star would you like to see in porn? thread?

Obvious misdirection, you are actually called Lucas Jackson and look like Paul Newman right?

Meh, $30 isn't so easy to pony-up for some people. Embarrassingly, I admit that I'm in that camp. I mean, the me of 5+ years ago would've had no problem contributing $30 (or more) to this cause. But now? My "porn budget" is so restrained that this $30 donation is tough to do.

Mass Facialties, I've said this to a couple people privately but will say it publicly... contributions come in many forms. Submit a couple reviews and drop me a line. We'd be happy to give "All-Star" status to everyone who contributes. Reviews are a great way to contribute. (that said, I've probably missed a few reviewers in handing out all-star status - please don't be shy and message me if I did - little overwhelmed these days.)
I'm sure this isn't a new idea, but if a company like ADE or BushDVD ran a promotion where some of the proceeds went to the ADT defense fund, I bet there'd be many takers and it would certainly help with awareness. Similarly, a star could do a special cam show or something to raise money/awareness. I'm sure there are all kinds of legal/tax implications and maybe it would come off as opportunistic, but I think it would be awesome. I know that a lot of these people/companies are already stepping up in other ways and will do my best to reward them for their efforts. FWIW, that Bush is out $17K because of these asshats, is the reason I'll make my next purchase from them. Has anyone tried to get an article posted on /. (slashdot.org)? I used to be an avid reader there and know they love to post patent/copyright troll articles and their community reacts -- I'm not sure if a bunch of kids would do much more than trash talk on their boards, but it is a relatively main stream outlet with a lot of members who are passionate about these types of things. There seems to be an acceptance bias from certain submitters and doubt my submission would make it to the main site as I rarely post anything there (my professional identity is tightly coupled to my identity there and so I've always been very guarded about what I post there). For those that are interested in some of the broader issues at play, I highly recommend starting at EFF.org (The Electronic Freedom Foundation). They're an amazing resource for this and more. I cannot recommend them enough. It's too bad we can get a national conversation around the size of Trump's junk but cannot get one about the necessary tort reforms to protect small businesses and individuals. We've been in contact with the legal team at the EFF. They are aware of the suit and may step in with resources at some point depending on how this proceeds.
Isn't there a "fair use" argument to be made in this case? Blog post link to semi-related case with an analysis of the four-point test for fair use applied by a court in NY: link The legal code providing the four-point test for fair use: legal code Edited by - fu_q on 3/30/2016 10:12:30 AM
There may be, but under advice of counsel Steph and I aren't going to be able to comment or analyze the various arguments we may be able to make in our defense. It puts us in an awkward position because we're asking for the community's financial support but can't really talk about how we're planning to use the funding provided to us. I certainly appreciate the links to stories, analysis and related cases. As a community we can educate people on these issues. Steph and I just can't participate in certain aspects of the discussion. I hope you understand. BTW, our attorneys are Oscar Michelen and Nicholas Ranallo. Look 'em up.
Also, the fact that the "moderators" are all unpaid volunteers who are by no means actually obligated to do the bidding of the owners of the site either in a timely fashion or, quite honestly, even at all should help render that particular point in the case moot. It's not like they're "employees" of the site with real and defined responsibilities to which they're beholden. They're just regular dudes (and dudettes, as the case may be) who sometimes help out when they can. I get so tired of this "lawyer spin" stuff.
It isn't an awkward position, it is standard to not be able to discuss strategies. The last thing you want to do is let the opposition know what you will be doing and allow them to prepare in advance for it. I am sure that everyone here understands that.
@coolhand: Use Gift Credit Cards that you can buy in any store. I use them for anonymity in political and charity donations, (i really don't want to get on mailing lists and receive 10000 solicitations a day) and porn sites, and almost anything that has recurring charges, so that I can be certain I won't incur ridiculous charges just in case I forget to cancel something that I didn't want.
So disappointed in myself!!! I have some for anonymous purchases right here in my desk drawer next to the computer. Why using one for this didn't occur to me is a complete fucking mystery to me. Thanks!
First thing I thought was Ha Ha April Fools. Good one. But no. Good God. Then I thought well I need a Gold Star. I'm HeyNow after all! Not a Gold Starr though. And certainly I need an AdultDVDTalk t-shirt. Probably two. Getting my donation dropped into the Internet soon!
^^ you are too funny. Just posting cuz I wanna see my gold star too! And I miss the emojis!! Can't tell you the number of times I've searched for on my phone, only to remember it's an ADT forum thing. (I did spend a lot of time on here.) GOOD LUCK, STEPH AND DREW!!!

Well, if getting sued brings out the HeyNow and the Savoy it's almost worth it (OK, not really but thanks peeps! We're getting there! and the gold star program will hopefully outlast the present mess.)

Oh I've been thinking about adding other perks... used dildos, anal scented candles, gape star status... Another grand round of thanks! $6000 in donations (a lot of that from gold star members!)
Yesss! I do it with that one too! I miss youse guys too! I never thought there would be a HeyNow return because I couldn't imagine there being ADT with no HeyNow. Whoa. Hi Bob!

Can you imagine what a money maker an autographed, unwashed dildo from a favorite pornchick would be. Create a dildo/stockings/soiled panties package while you're at it Feel the Perv!
I was thinking of this kind of thing too. In fact, you could combine this with the ADT t-shirt perk. How much money do you think people would be willing to pay for an ADT t-shirt worn by their fave porn star (who also happens to be a member of our lovely forum)? I'm betting the answer is "a lot".
^ Maybe some high-value items or experiences could be auctioned. Axel Braun is clearly insane if he thinks he's going to raise $500,000, but he has raised more than $30,000. They sold 13 "personalized video messages" for $100. They sold 9 unspecified "movie props" for $150, and I can imagine lingerie that was used in a scene netting more than that. They sold 6 "Limited Edition" DVDs for $500. I have a friend whose sister votes for the Academy Award. My friend has a collection of DVDs that her sister gave her that are clearly marked and have special packaging. Do the AVN voters get similar DVDs? If so, maybe they could be auctioned. A visit to the set got them $1000, and I'm sure ADT could arrange having someone observe a shoot as a media rep. 3 walk-on roles sold for $2000 each. A date with Allie Haze netted $2500, and I could imagine an auction to date someone like Angela White (or another supportive performer) bringing in a similar amount. A seat at Axel Braun's table at the AVN netted $5000; I can imagine someone like Spiegler might be willing to auction a seat at his table. This isn't to say that the $6000 isn't great, or that these ideas are the best ones in the world. But in his madness, Braun has shown how to raise $30,000 from porn fans. The $30 donations are important, they show that there is a real community out there ready to support you. The fact that some producers and stars stepped up with money is a hint that they might be willing to donate a little time too.

Maybe, we could create a special Mystery Science Theater 3000 style set of disks, with three guys sitting in the front row masturbating? For a $500 donation, you get to be one of the three guys When you think about it, the whole shtick, with a porn theme, could be hysterical.
