ultimate_sperminator, thank you! Your star is in. Yes, it's something we have to do manually. And just so everyone knows, we don't tie your real name to your profile. We use the email address to know which user you are... and then we promptly forget any personal info.

T-shirts are packed and ready to ship tomorrow for those who sent me their size. I wish we could provide some kind of update but we're in lawsuit limbo. Thanks to everyone for your support! We feel a little more covered, a little less like doom is impending. There may be an ebb n flow in our fundraising efforts based on advice from attorneys and watching similar cases go through the courts. This is a great community (despite a few crazies ;) Honored to be a part of it.
Wow. After nearly 3 years away from the site, I checked back on a whim and found this news. What a coincidence. I am sorry to see this, but am glad to help.
^^My guess is that it will take some time. There was once a concern that I might be named in a legal proceeding due to conducting a function of my job for an organization. I was told by the attorney that it could take up to a year to be dropped from the suit personally, and the suit itself against the organization would take well over a year. Fortunately, the suit never happened, as it would have been frivolous (...not that this isn't b/c it is...), but the point is that lawyers notoriously drag their feet. In dealing with them in an official capacity for between 5 and 6 years, I found them to be painfully slow and, often, just as unresponsive... (Fortunately, I've never had to deal with the court system itself... just a federal agency a couple of times...)
What's that infamous porn movie (I think it was buy the guys who did Behind the Green Door) where there's a gang-bang scene and all the guys are wearing duck masks?

We have some incredibly good news... DISMISSED! We're so shocked that we need to calm down and figure out how to handle funds raised beyond our current legal costs. All the companies that paid for Thank You sponsorships - we will provide equivalent/better forms of promotion. I hope this does not mean that we don't get to see Gore Gore Girl in an ADT t-shirt and Stallone mask.

and that last post should obviously have a bold THANK YOU. We felt like folding up and leaving the internet. Your support really did make the difference.
That is wonderful news! I am glad to hear it. You two never deserved to go through what you had to. You run a great site, respectful of both the consumer and the industry, and this lawsuit was a mockery of justice. I am glad that it didn't get dragged out any longer, it never should have happened in the first place. If we get to offer suggestions on the remaining funds, I would like to suggest that it be donated to one of the groups that provides the free legal advice for this kind of situation, one of the ones that helped you. Pay it forward for the next people attacked by these pathetic trolls. Our community was saved, it would be good to help save the next community at risk too.
I like this idea. I don't know who all provided help behind the scenes, but I'm all for donating the money to them so they can help save the next community.
Awesome, awesome, AWESOME news! So glad ADT is safe. This place has become a second home to me. It provides me with an outlet to talk about a major interest I can't really talk about in a detailed way anywhere else. So thank you for that. I'm very relieved this surreal nightmare is over for Steph and Drew. I've got no thoughts on what to do with any of the leftover money. The suggestions all sound good though.

I just noticed that the fundraising was in pause mode and was wondering why. Glad to hear that case is dismissed and you and Drew can move on. Frivolous lawsuits should get what they deserve. I second donating remaining funds to protecting others fro such suits.
On a sidenote, can I get my big double everything sign back under my star, pretty please?
I recommend that you put it in a dedicated bank account and don't touch it. This kind of thing could happen again someday, and if it does, you'll have a head start.
I imagine the case against ADT was dismissed because it failed on legal grounds not because the plaintiff is a 'copyright troll'. Moreover the reason it did get dismissed is because Steph and Drew had the backbones to ignore the shake down and force the claimant to file a suit. So, while I agree that giving money to people who helped Steph and Drew is a good idea, the reason would be because they helped, not to fight someone else's battles. There is no inevitable certainty that the 'next community' would win a lawsuit since cases are determined in relation to their own particular factual matrix and legal merits, and not because the plaintiff is a greaseball and the defendant might not be so greasy - it might be the 'next community' is breaching copyright law to the extent that a case against them won't be dismissed. If there is a problem here, it is the legislation. There will always be operators who try to take advantage of legal loopholes. If we want to 'fight' these people, it's about educatiing site developers to assess appropriate risks at the 'top of the cliff', put in place measures to eliminate/minimize exposure to the risks and keep up to date with the changing legal environment. If lawyers want to be the 'ambulance at the bottom' because desperate people pay more, then there's also a problem with lawyers. Edited by - Sexy Sadie on 4/15/2016 7:31:22 PM
