| blake_fan Member Under the spell of my muse. 175 Posts 1/01 |  Posted - Oct 29 2003 : 8:10PMAll the following is in relation to the DVD release of the 1980 classic TABOO by Standard Digital, called the "Special Collector's Edition." This is not the VCX version. Video and audio quality are excellent with the exception of about ninety seconds, where Kay Parker's character is sitting on the edge of a fountain looking over the newspaper classifieds. This scene is plagued by the artifacts that usually accompany an old film transfer. I have no idea why the studio missed cleaning up this scene. The commentary track by Director Kirdie Stevens and the Producer/Writer Helene Terrie is generally very good. I don't know their ages, but there appears to be some memory lapses as they admit to things they cannot remember, and on a couple occasions even repeat themselves about things they just said. The interesting thing was their repeated attempts to remember the real names of the performers.(!) The commentary track by Kay Parker is by far the worst I have ever heard. And that was a crying shame, as this was one of the major reasons for obtaning this DVD. She hardly says anything, and fifty-percent of that is prompted out of her by someone off-microphone. She repeatedly laughs, giggles and comments about the lines being spoken in the movie; The problem being that on this DVD with the commentary track on, we cannot hear the lines in the movie! She is a sweet lady, is of good spirits on the commentary track, and when she does talk it is interesting to listen to. But it is not worth the time listening to it. The extras include the original trailer, a good interview with Kay Parker, and a photo gallery. In final, this is a movie that proves the Golden Age really was golden, and this DVD transfer gives it a fair treatment. In his commentary, Director Stevens said that TABOO is Francis Ford Coppola's favorite porno. It is easy to see why. The direction is generally flawless, the acting is acceptable (which is above average porn standards), the plot is solid, and all the sex scenes are plot-driven. Not that it shouldn't have ended the way it did, just that, I think, it could have been handled a little bit better. (It's almost as if Stevens had already planned on a sequel so he didn't manage to make it quite as self-contained as he could have.) I haven't seen any of the sequels - but doesn't some other actor play Mike Ranger's role? If so, that's too bad. [Link] |

Don't know if that's a good or a bad thing for the ladies though . I'm just guessing here , but it almost seems as if Standard Digital are worried Kay Parker isn't beautiful enough to sell their disc . If you look at the screen caps used on the back artwork there isn't one good clear likeness of her . She's always turning away or throwing her head back in ecstasy . This seems crazy to me 'cause Kay really gets my motor running ! [Link] |

Here are some pictures of Kay Parker: In my opinion, it is the same woman. (I'll admit I could still be wrong - as I was that Cynthia Pendragon issue, but the differences there were more extreme...) The picture on the cover has been "glamourized" and is of her at a younger age - but I think it still looks very much the same despite that. As for Mike Ranger, it's much harder to tell anything because there's hardly any of the person visible. (If we had a face to work with it could be immediately obvious what the story was.) As with Parker, I don't believe it's a picture of him from the movie itself (since he doesn't have an earring in the movie), but, whoever it is, he certainly has the same body type. I had to resort to taking screen captures myself, since I could find nothing of him with similar poses - it was hard enough finding similar poses in the movie itself! The most telling difference is the hair colour and style - but I suppose that could have changed. (Not common with men, however.) Also, it seems that the chest is smooth in the front cover, whereas Ranger's chest wasn't smooth in the movie. Again, this doesn't guarantee it's not the same person but it's some small evidence against it. (I guess that the above picture will remain valid until such a time that I ever write my own review of the movie and replace them.) I'd also find it strange if one was actually the person represented and the other wasn't. Bottom line: I wouldn't be surprised either way. It looks like Parker to me, but, on reflection, not Ranger. However, they certainly look similar enough (especially the woman) that it's not going to bother me... (My apologies for the "blurry" watermarks. I didn't realise how big the graphic images were until after I saw them in the post. I resized them down to 50% but had to put new watermarks on top of the old ones, as the old ones were too small to read - the "blurriness" is due to the smaller watermark still underneath the larger one.
