When I get the sense that the couple on the screen has forgotten that there are cameras and crew in the room and that they are just enjoying each other, THAT is when I "believe" that the passion is real. If you watch the same actresses over a period of time you can usually tell when they've forgotten about the cameras and are just letting go. A good director (like Nica Noelle for example) encourages this by not using a lot of cuts or over directing. I've been watching porn for too long to be able to assemble a top ten list, but my most recent example of a woman having a good time is Julia Ann in her scene with Tommy Gunn in "The Stepmother 4". This is a long scene and both performers are putting out a lot of energy. At one point, Julia really seems to lose control (or at least that's what she makes me believe) as Tommy is pounding her from behind. But isn't the bottom line: perception is reality? [Link] |

You're absolutely right that performers have a much higher probability of "losing themselves" if they are NOT interrupted. Providing, of course, that they like each other to begin with (another detail I try to get right as much as possible.) This is why I was in a bit of dilemma recently when the 5D camera exploded onto the scene (I wrote an article on it for Xbiz called "Cinepornographers" a few months back). The 5D, a stills camera which shoots incredibly cinematic-looking video at a low price, quickly became the camera of choice for many studios, such as New Sensations, Zero Tolerance, and Reality Junkies. It basically elevates the look of the movie to broadcast level and beyond; there's a real cinematic feel to it. It can make a low budget movie instantly look like a high-budget production. The problem, though, is that the camera doesn't autofocus, and so shooting "real sex," spontaneous and interrupted, is almost impossible. It would look like a blurry mess. So instead, you have to stop the performers to adjust focus, or you have to orchestrate the scene. For me, this is a total dealbreaker. I simply will not interrupt the performers once the sex scene gets started (barring unforeseen technical or other issues, obviously.) Mike Quasar and I were just discussing this on another forum, where he told me that he recently shot a 28 minute scene with the 5D where he only had to stop the performers 4 times. Mike is one of the best directors in the business both from an artistic and technical standpoint, so I have little doubt this is about as good a result as anyone could hope for. But to me, it's untenable. I told him I think of it in similar terms to when you're asleep and someone keeps waking you up. The first or second time, you can maybe get back to sleep again. But if they wake you up a third time, a fourth time, you snap out of your altered state. You're like "forget it, I'm up now." And that's what I think happens during a sex scene. You go into an altered state of consciousness where it's vital that you not be interrupted. To interrupt affects everything, from body language to energy to the mood of the performers. Which is why I won't switch to those cameras, even though almost everyone else at my level is. [Link] |
