This year I didn't attend the AEE show in Las Vegas and was very surprised when Jerome Tanner (hall of fame) called me with the news. I personally would have voted for David Perry
or Toni Ribas.

Again I don't understand that Erik Everhard hasn't got anything. He is one of my all time favorites.

Nevertheless I'm happy for my award and especially to have it again with my friends Manuel and Katsumi.

For Female Performer of the Year, I was pulling for Flower Tucci since it seemed she really broke out this year but Audrey Hollander is no less deserving. Congratulations to her and it's good to see all her hard work finally recognized. In her honor, I re-watched Otto & Audrey "Destroy the World" and her scene in "I'll Do Anything For You."

I'm completely baffled on Best New Starlet, though. From a field that included Lori Alexia, Joanna Angel, Jasmine Byrne, Courtney Cummz, Brooke Haven, Jenaveve Jolie, Sunny Lane, Tory Lane, Vanessa Lane, Trina Michaels, Keri Sable, Hillary Scott, Taryn Thomas and Kelly Fuckin' Wells, McKenzie Lee wins? Admittedly, "Tear Me a New One" and "Slut Puppies" (not to mention Tory Lane, Jasmine Byrne AND Hillary Scott were all in this, too) were good but all the other nominees did so many great scenes in 2005, there's no way I'd be able to pick out just TWO like I did for Lee.

If I'm an AVN voter, do I go with the girl that is so ambitious with all of her press releases and endless appearances at industry events that she might remind me of Reese Witherspoon from Election (Sunny Lane) or with the new ClubJenna girl who's nominatated (McKenzie)? Fuck, how do I even boil down the choices to just those two when I'm leaving out Lori Alexia, Joanna Angel, Jasmine Byrne, Courtney Cummz, Brooke Haven, Jenaveve Jolie, Tory Lane, Vanessa Lane, Trina Michaels, Keri Sable, Hillary Scott, Taryn Thomas and Kelly Fuckin' Wells, almost all of whom legitimate arguments could be made for?

To point out the obvious, the AVN Awards are what they are. They can be fun to speculate about online during bouts of boredom and you are happy for those who won, sad for those who lost, but ultimately you remember it's just another subjective awards show (for an incredibly subjective medium) with a relatively small voting panel and endless collusion charges and disregard it as such...unless you're in the industry, in which case you treat this as just another chance to increase sales and work-up press releases to tout your wins and possibly proceed to mention your AVN wins on future boxcovers (like Kick Ass Pictures).

McKenzie Lee is a total shocker. That was such a strong category (instead of McKenzie, even, I would have expected Keri Sable ... if they were going to go that route). Mostly, I'm amazed that Sunny Lane didn't win -- she fits the role perfectly. McKenzie's hot -- but the award is premature.

I'd still lick the batter-fried cod off her eye teeth, though [:P)]

Last year, Cytherea and Lauren Phoenix won but I haven't heard much about them afterwards. Does anyone really think McKenzie and Audrey are going to hit it big? I think being successful in the adult industry is all about building your fanbase or getting a company to push you into the media, getting you on magazine covers and TV shows, or a combination of both. The more people that know you, the more power you'll have.

I'm not saying we should have won even if we were nominated, but to not be nominated is just a utter slap in the face. It's very tough to launch a company in this business and survive. There were a lot of solid companies that launched in the past year and have made it through the trials and tribulations of a new company. My hat's definately off for all of the nominees.

I don't know but I think I saw that Lauren is now running some agency, and was listed as being available for photo shoots only. Cytherea took about a year off, according to some interview I saw recently.

I think Lauren was an ideal choice last year.

If they wanted the best sexual performer this year, it would have been Sandra Romain -- but Audrey also did stuff for Ninn and some other feature-y stuff, and she's stunning, and she does all the crazy stuff (though how much crazy stuff can you do before it loses its zip).

I'm very happy for Randy Spears who won best actor and a little bit disappointed that Erik Everhard didn't win anything.

The best moment for me was when Katsumi mentioned my name when she won best anal scene. that means so much to me that I had to wipe tears off my face. It's nice to win awards but if a person that you have a lot of respect for says something so amazing about you is way better.

I'm happy about my award for best solo scene. I wanted to win this because it's not Katja typical. If people speak about me they think about ass, anal, dp, interracial and all that - so it really means a lot to me to prove that I'm way more than that. I can actually perform all by myself in a more erotic than totally hardcore category.

Tony - Paul, me and the rest of the AVN staff have nothing but respect for Joey, Chris, Pat, you and the rest of Third Degree (whose product I personally love), and we've always had a good relationship, so I'm a little surprised at the tone of your post,
The truth of the matter is simple: rightly or wrongly, we felt that Third Degree had been around a little too long to be nommed in the brand new category of Best New Company. Now maybe we erred in that assessment, and if we did, our apologies, but really guy, that's the long and short of it. To intimate that you have to kiss our ass to get props from us is a little insulting, or have you forgotten that we gave you guys the August 2004 cover, thereby getting a lot of grief from a number of older companies that have NEVER had the cover? (Third Degree getting the August 2004 cover, btw, means you had to have been around for at least a few months before that, which would have placed you well outside the eligibility period for a new company.) And last year, I interviewed Joey, you and the rest of you guys for a one-year Third Degree anniversary profile that ran in our Sept. 2005 issue. I really don't remember you having to take me out to lunch to get that profile.
In any event - there's your explanation, again. If you want to go on believing there's some darker motivation, well, that's your choice, but I assume you have more useful things to do with your valuable time.
Here's hoping Third Degree has a great 2006.

Just look at pretty much any given Oscars ceremony from the past century to see that the AVNs aren't alone in that sense.

Hey, look at Robert Redford/Ordinary People over Scorsese/Raging Bull (1980) to see that this is nothing new. I could dig up some others, but I'm far too lazy atm.

..and Tony, that does seem a bit rough to have excluded you on a seperate criteria to those they use for the performers, next time the editor of AVN posts here to defend his awards, it might be worth asking him about it..

Wouldn't it make sense for there to be a specific cutoff date for when a company (or girl) should be considered to be "new" for that given awards cycle?

At the very least, it would eliminate any complaints revolving around the subjectivity as to whether a company (or starlet) should be considered "new" or not for that year.

You have a specific 9/30 cutoff for individual titles. I think that it would make sense to do something similar for the awards that are given to newcomers. However, I don't think that this cutoff should also be 9/30, probably more like the end of May or June.
