When you think about it, most of the top ranked porn stars are overrated. How could they not be? In a business as big and diverse as the sex trade, if you're obsessing over one girl or five girls, you're not paying attention (I'm as guilty of this as anyone else). There are so many hot girls coming and going it's incredible that some of them don't just explode into the big time like Sasha or any of the rest of them. I have been disappointed so many times that I often don't bother to check out a new girl who's getting a lot of hype. Sometimes I do check them out in a scene or two and I'm thinking "This is what all the hype is about???". What happens, I think, is that girls get famous because of one scene or a few scenes they did for a particular director or with a particular costar and they never really live up to that level of excellence again. It's such a magical thing when everything in a scene is exactly right. You can't reproduce it just by doing everything the same way. Or even by using the same performers. The reasons for the scene's greatness are intangible. So. Such and such girl does one scene that's absolutely incredible and everyone is talking about it and how hot it was. Everyone rushes to get that scene and everyone rushes to get as many scenes with that girl as they can get their hands on and before you know it, she's a genuine phenomenon. 80% of the scenes might actually suck (not necessarily her fault) but she's hit the big time. Her scenes are flying off the shelves and everyone wants her in their next movie. And of course, the girl is flattered beyond all reason. Who wouldn't be? She accepts offers from any director/studio who will shoot her on her terms. And there's the problem. A girl can go from shooting a fantastic scene with Manuel today to shooting a terrible scene with some nitwit internet upstart (who doesn't know a thing about making good porn, doesn't even care and only wants the money) tomorrow. Many girls have a lot of unevenness in their careers. They don't appear to be selective at all in who they shoot for. They apparently don't realize that if they shoot a scene with a scrappy director and costar for a shit company that makes terrible porn they hurt their own reputations in the process. I'm gonna have to agree about Sasha Grey. That's been the biggest problem with Sasha through out her career. Every scene, or every picture I've ever seen of hers...she's had the exact same expression/look on her face and just looks bored. Once in a while, she has put out some great scenes, but even then...had the same problem of constant staring at the camera and lack of any facial expressions. The whole act of going out of her way to show her supposed intellect and intelligence is annoying too. She was great her first year, but in the last couple of years...way over rated. I still consider myself a fan of hers though, and still hope she sticks around and gets rid of these habits and really gets "involved" in her porn. Meaning turning back the black to the 2006-2007 Sasha Grey. Btw, Jenna Haze completely deserves every Award and all the praise she gets, because year after year...she totally brings it every single scene! The most over rated though, has to be Jesse Jane followed by Amy Reid. btw, Tori Black IS one of the prettiest girls to ever be anywhere near porn. I'd put her right up there with Sunny Leone, Lacie Hart, Jenna Haze and Stefani Morgan when it comes to natural beauty. She is also a hell of a performer! So no, I don't think Tori is over rated. Well, can't argue about her performance. She does have great scenes most of the time although her voice can be annoying after a while. I just don't think her looks match up IMO. There's not enough meat on her and her face isn't beautifull. Never really found her attractive.

Gianna is a great performer but she is a bit overheralded. I couldn't agree more with Jenna and Sasha. I couldn't disagree more with Amy and Audrey. I find them to be underrated because I see them as the hottest girls in porn. I don't think they get nearly enough praise or accolades as some of the other girls. Audrey fans are all about Audrey and I'm a huge fan of Audrey's work. I think her personality really sucks but she is too sexy. I can't get my eyes off her. Whether someone or something is "overrated" is something I rarely think about. People have differing opinions, and I would be extremely vain if I thought that my opinions were somehow more important than anyone else's. If someone or something is popular, there must be a reason for it even if I don't understand those reasons.
I'm also in agreement as well. It's not that she's bad, she's a really good starlet, but she's not the greatest starlet of all time IMO. A lot of people are making her more great than what she actually is. Just look at how many pages her thread has on the star crossed forum (especially with how long she's only been around). People go way too overboard over her I don't think she's that good. There's so many active pornstars right now I'd take any day over Lana Rhoades, but that's just me.
Naming names seems to get their fans upsets. For the sake of keeping what I think could be a good discussion alive and without naming names, what is your definition of an overrated pornstar?

There's so many underrated out there that I'll have my focus on them instead of. Let's just say that most female will go from underrated to overrated if they make success, it's a way of how things work, and as long as you're in for more than half a year, you wil be kinda doomed, if you're not Ginger Lynn or something like that. Big league pornstars just can't be underrated. Then they're not big fucking league pornstars.
I think it's mostly because she's so pretty. So many people are just amazed that someone that beautiful is prepared to do porn, that they have this tendency to hype her up as being better than she is. ^No one is hyping her up as better than she is. There is no objective standard of measurement here. She really is that good for individuals who view her as such. Now, if you're saying that fans hype her up as better than she is to you, that I can understand, but why would you expect others to only like her as much as you do? People will like her more or less than you based on their personal tastes and independent of your's. That's only reasonable.
Well, when it comes to porn good looks can count as a major asset. Not everyone judges pornstars just on sex acts or performance. I like a lot of pornstars for a lot of different reasons. With some pornstars it's because of their performance, some because of their looks, some because of their big breasts, some because of their bubble butt, and some just have an appeal I don't quite understand but I never get tired of watching them. Some of my fav pornstars aren't the best performers but there's something about them that makes me enjoy watching them. I'm a big fan of Tera Patrick because I just really love her look even though her sex scenes were fairly mild her looks elevated her performances in my mind. On the other side of the coin there are girls that I don't find that attractive but their performances enhance their looks in my mind. Their dirtiness makes them sexy. So I personally don't think any girl is "over-rated" because if they are popular they have something about them that appeals to a lot of people even if I don't get it or agree. Tori Black was very good looking, was a strong performer, and did lots of IR. I should've been a huge Tori fan but for whatever reason she did nothing for me. Yet there are girls not nearly as good looking and aren't half the performer Tori was that I never get tired of watching. There are lots of girls like that for me. Go figure. It's just one of those things.

I have watched Manuel Ferrara about a thousand times, maybe more, not much less. I'm an expert on his gonzo acts. Meaning I've spent such time on that man in the field of gonzo. I have watched Erik Everhard about the same. Maybe a little more. And Mark Ashley. About the same as those two, maybe slicely more, or about the same. I don't think a particular porn star can be overrated. I do think her fan base can be over zealous though. Lana Rhoades is a beautiful girl and a great performer but some of the posts in her thread give me the heebie-jeebies.
I think that goes back to something that was alluded to earlier (and I agree), that many people really mean something more along the lines of "overhyped" when they say "overrated". It frequently happens when a particular fanbase thinks (for whatever reason) that their idol is underrated by the rest of the world and they won't stop trying to rectify that.

^It seems to me that the term "overhyped" coveys the same basic sentiment as "overrated", since fans will hype a pornstar or not depending on how highly they rate them. It also takes us to the same place of pointlessly debating whether a pornstar deserves the hype or not.
Rob piper is always too flaccid and soft to be regarded as a good performer. I guess it's good to have chemistry on screen, but what's the point if you can't even stay hard for the duration of 30-40 mins?
To me, "overrated" implies criticism aimed at a fairly broad consensus of opinions, as in, say, people calling Jenna Jameson overrated. "Overhyped" is more of a comment about performers pushed by small-but-very-vocal fanbases, and at least my impression is that most claims of overratedness these days are actually about that. (If only because broad consensus about performers has become a rather rare thing in contemporary porn.) Anyway, I'm not intending to make any sort of comment about the usefulness of debating either description, I'm just saying that different groups of people seem to be trying to express different things by "overrated", and that tends to result in many such debates ending up with people talking right past one another. I rate the stars myself , don't give a flying fuck to what everybody else overrates or underrates some stars , maybe the second may upset me a little because underrated stars tend to be ignored and underused and this means fewer scenes available , but generally I only watch those I like , you'd be surprised if you knew how many stars I like that the vast majority don't and the opposite how many big names do nothing for me. but the thing is, I still don't give a fuck about their rank.
