Digital Rights Management. If when you put the high definition DVD in your computer it asks for an internet connection before letting you watch then chances are it's DRM protected. It's an anti-piracy measure which has the unfortunate effect of sometimes discriminating against people outside the US or those not using Bill Gates' software.

Does the disc actually say HD DVD on it?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't DRM encoded.

yea it says HD-DVD on it.it also says 'HD playback requires 2.5 ghz pc or WMV-HD compliant player'

i popped it in my laptop just now with internet disabled and it still played. but maybe i already acquired a license from the first time i played it. Is there any other way of figuring out if it has DRM?

anyway, here are the listed system specs:

MINIMUM CONFIGURATION (plays 720p video)
microsoft windows XP
windows media player 9 series
2.4 ghz processor or equiv
384 MB of RAM
64 MB vid card
1024 x 768 screen resolution
16 bit sound card
speakers

We'll have to wait for the tech lord KPerv or someone else who properly understands these things, as that's the extent of my knowledge about uncovering DRM. If it says HD-DVD then it's entirely possible they haven't included any protection, as this DVD is in fact WMV HD while HD-DVD is a new format Toshiba are set to launch early next year. Mislabeling like that would suggest they don't really know what they are up to. Is Machrovision advertised before the standard definition feature? If not then they may have left both versions unprotected.

Tech lord? My, my, we are full of flattery today, my monochromatic fellow DRM-hater.

Anyhu, I don't actually know how to check for it, as I don't use Windows myself.
But I found the following little snippet of info on Microsoft's site. It's about music files, but video files are probably similar in this.

I hope it isn't protected/crippled, as I really would like to buy this one.

Excellent review, Masamune.

BTW, Lee, are you sure it isn't technically correct (however misleading) to call it HD-DVD?
I mean, the WMV9 format is, IIRC, endorsed by the DVD consortium as a valid HD-DVD codec, and as the HD-DVD lasers are supposed to be compatible with traditional DVDs, any future HD-DVD player may be expected to be able to play this as if it was a 'real' HD-DVD. Just one with a higher compression to fit onto the smaller disc.

I'd just been staring at Monica Bellucci's norks for the last ten minutes, so it's possible the "tech lord" comment was a result of temporary insanity.

The thing is, it's all still up in the air for HD-DVD since the final spec hasn't yet been voted on, and Warner have been pushing for red laser WMV (essentially DVDs with HD content crammed on in WMV codec like Pirates) to be added. Having said that I can't believe Toshiba would want their potential future waters muddied by having incompatible discs already out there in the market and using the same name they themselves plan to use.

All that's kind of moot however, after the latest momentus news. Paramount (one of the 3 major studios to pledge support to HD DVD) has just announced that they will now also be releasing on Blu Ray, with the other 2 studios Universal ad Warner trailed to follow suit shortly. At that point Blu Ray will have total studio support for their format, while HD DVD will only have about 43% of the market. Which machine do you imagine joe six pack would be more likely to pick up at the store? The studios and manufacturers aren't totally stupid and they must see that scenario. I'd be surprised at this point if HD DVD ever saw the light of day.

There is no adventurous sex in Pirates. My main complaint is that the sex acts are vanilla and there are too many girl/girl scenes. There are no dp's or pirate gang-bangs, something that could have easily been added. I don't know what Joone or Digital Playground were thinking when they decided what sex scenes were going to be in this. If they were going for the couples crowd, I don't see how putting in three girl-girl scenes is going to appeal when you consider that most female viewers don't like them. You also need to consider that porn has changed over the years to encompass alot of different types of sex acts. The viewing public almost expects to see them, something Pirates is lacking in.

As I'm a bit confused now, a silly question:
The Pirates DVDs will play on a common DVD-Player without any High Definition sh.t, won't they?

Yes.
There are three discs in the set.

1. The feature on a regular DVD, which you'll play as normal.

2. Another standard DVD disc with bonus footage.

3. The main feature + BTS footage in WMV format. That's the one I'm worried might have the DRM protection.

Kperv,

i opened the wmv files in windows media player (when u put the disc in it actually autoplays on its own player which doesn't appear to be windows media player)
then I did this -> Library -> click on the playing file...

and there is NO protection on it.
Heres the full details listed:

Title: PiratesXXX_0_0 (i also checked it with the other file, the BTS segment. this one here is the main feature)

Media: video

Protected: No

File Path: D:\video\pirates\PiratesXXX_0_0

I also right clicked the files, properties, license
and the license details box is empty.

hope that helps

I just watched this movie. Out of all the thousands of porn films I've watched I have only watched three all the way through without fast-forwarding to find a better girl/sex act - "Debbie Does Dallas", "Dark Angels" amd now "Pirates". This film was brilliant and shows the great potential for porn.

I loved the story, visual effects and the music. The music in particular was extremely well suited to what was happening in the story. The music in Carmen Luvana's last scene sounded like the happy little "Hobbit's Theme" from "Lord of the Rings".

Evan Stone was hilarious as usual. Carmen, Jesse and Janine were great. the real stand-out for me was Jesse Jane. I had only ever seen her before in lame-ass lesbian scenes - but this girl can really suck cock (her deep-throating was awe and stiffy inspiring!). Jesse also proved to be a very capable actress.

Now I am the first guy to dismiss lesbian scenes as a waste of filmtape. I can count the good lesbian scenes I have seen on two upraised fingers. However, Jesse's two lesbo romps in this film were winners. In particular, Jesse's scene with Carmen had the eyes popping out of my head. They fucked like a pair of wild mongoose!!

All in all, this is another movie like "Dark Angels" that I will watch over and over again for both the story and the sex.

The Pirates production values are excellent but the story is boring and the sex conventional. To say that I'm disappointed is to put it mildly.

If you guys want to know the truth, they should call the hi-def format they used wmv-hd, not hd-dvd. Hd-dvd is the new format from Toshiba coming out that will compete against blu-ray. Blu-ray, which was developed by Sony, uses a blue laser (hence the reason it is called blu-ray) to read smaller pits on a new higher densisty disk, while hd-dvd concentrates on using a blue laser with the same kind of discs used for dvd. The reason they can fit wmv-hd on a single dvd is due to the higher compression used in the wmv-hd format versus the dvd standard mpeg-II. I hope this helps explain it in a way everyone can follow.

I bought this movie last night at a signing with Jesse and Carmen in Tukwila, Wa. Damn these girls are HOT! I am usually a gonzo-guy, but I really enjoyed the movie. I was blown away by all of Jesse's performances, especially the Jesse/Carmen and Jesse/Janine scenes. That girl is on FIRE!!

Some random observations based on my first viewing:

*Least things first: The packaging is just about the best I've ever seen on any DVD. The cover is pretty sweet, but once you open up the foldouts inside, the nude portraits of Janine, Jesse and Carmen are frickin' gorgeous. Really spectacular.

*It's not uniformly good. The dialogue before Carmen and Jesse tangle is the worst kind of porno cheese, and then they get into a scene that doesn't really match the characters (Carmen's, anyway). But this is the beauty of porn: Who the fuck cares? I'm usually the only one who does, but here it instantly fails to matter because they're hot as hell together.

*Jesse fucking Jane, man. On the surface she's nothing I like in porn, but all those whiners who say there's no good sex in features should have to watch her first. Sure it's a little over-the-top sometimes, but for some reason I buy into her act big-time. She's got personality to spare, and she's not the worst actress out there, either.

*My exposure to Janine has been limited because of the g/g aspect of the rest of her career. I could become a real fan. She really has a good face for the screen -- all of the women here look good, but somehow she stands out as seeming to belong in movies.

*In a star-studded cast, not everyone will get enough attention. But Devon and Teagan do a great job setting up their one scene, and Devon takes a heck of a drilling.

*I was pretty disappointed that Brian Surewood didn't get more screen time, but his audition tape (as always, a cool DVD extra) kind of tells that story.

*There were some heavy accents from some of the non-sex performers, which was disconcerting. I don't know if it was a case of wanting to cast your friend or your favorite bartender or something, but I had to rewind to understand some lines. Unhelpful.

*Joone seems to be using some sort of voice mask on the commentary. What's up with that? Haven't I heard him using a normal voice on other discs anyway (probably a Tera Patrick movie), or am I imagining that?

A little of both. Not seven times or anything, and it's not part of a sex scene. But there is some spitting in at least two other sex scenes, including both directions in the Carmen/Jesse tussle, if I'm not mistaken.

Arrrrr! Liked it. Carmen spits on everyone now. Alright, I'm willing to roll with that. And Luvana vs. Jane is so saucy and so good and engrossing that you forget it's a lesbian scene! And Janine taught me a renewed interest in her boyside work. (For some reason I now think of her as "Lindy" because of that poor woman who got caught pyramid-stacking naked prisoners.) Anyway, it was good to see and will surely lead to a further Lindy investigation. Jesse and Devon both still strong, no surprise.

There were some legit laughs too. It's like some kind of milestone, this flick. It's an actual frickin' movie or something. What does this mean? I was even kind of proud of Playground/AdamEve.

Also, they couldn't have found some excuse to end up back in the brothel at the end? Aw, whatever. Good movie. When will we see another of it's kind--sometime in early 2009? I sure would like to see it become a semi-regular deal.

I loved this film. It was thoroughly entertaining. The sex was awesome for a feature, the dialogue was superior to most Hollywood features, and the humor was right up my alley. In particular I'd like to praise Carmen Luvana, whom I've always enjoyed as the "innocent girl" in features, Evan Stone and Stephen St. Croix for being funny as all hell, and Janine. Ah, Janine. Jesse Jane is one lucky girl to have spent a good length of time playing with you. You do a 35-year-old woman's heart good. You are the best!

Didn't dig it. The sex scenes (most of them anyway) lacked fire and intensity....the over-gasping and "faking it" screams drove me away.

And I think I'm just used to the extreme angles gonzo gives me that I thought it was shot badly ( the sex scenes I mean). Not one good ass shot, everything shot by the side...boring.

Can anyone explain why my computer went bonkers when I put in the wmv hd disc? Windows security blocked an ocx file. My registry alarm went off and then crashed. My firewall alarm went off saying something was trying to access the internet but I blocked it.

My computer can play wmv hd files just fine so any company should not be automatically trying to install software on my computer. That's a huge no no.
