I am at my friends and his computer has no sound. I did all the basic things of making sure everything is seated properly and plugged in, and I blew on it . :)
He used to have sound, his shit crashed, he wiped it and reloaded windows XP (well a dude at work did) I think when he reloaded it he got the wrong driver or chipset for the sound card, but I really am not sure. I tried downloading halfdone to find out what sort of sound card it is and came up with nvidia nforce and all the drivers are up to date for that
is a driver the same as a chipset (see how much help I need)
anyways he has windows XP, I can tell you anything you ask

Not that this is a solution for "sound problems," but sometimes a lot of things get screwed-up when Windows is re-loaded.
Do this, just for the hell of it (it can't hurt anything):
All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt
type in "chkdsk/f" (without the quotes)
when it tells you blah-blah-blah, type in "y"
Restart
This will fix many problems with windows (if there are any).
After it runs, it will re-boot itself again (sometimes more than once if you really have issues).
Let us know what happens.

thank you so much, i just walked back in my house, but I'm going to email him that, I think I found the right chipset, but when i was poking around the device manager I saw it wasn't set as the default sound device, but the option to set it was blacked out and wouldn't let me choose it, so I went to try to reinstall hardware to see if then it would see it, but no dice
I gave up for the night but I'm going to email your suggestion to him bigbob, or take it with me when i feel mentally ready for another crack at it

System Properties --> Device Manager --> click on the plus sign next to "sound, video and game controllers"
What is listed? Do any of the entries have the exclamation point (I think that's what is) that indicates a problem? If so, you can right-click on it and look at its properties and follow the prompts to try to find and install a driver.

none of them had an exclamation point :(
but thank you, they all claim the drivers are up to date and that they are working properly
I now think the problem is that nothing is designated as the default sound device

Right here we go...

goto device manager and check the sound one, any yellow exclamation marks? Or red X's?
goto the website for the motherboard, go to the download page and look up that motherboard and sound drivers.
Also make sure speakers are on, and check EACH connection on the back of the PC, they might be switched over by mistake, also check control panel, sound to see if there is a sound card listed in both default playback and recording
Make sure it’s not muted, and make sure the volume is up on both the main control, and speaker control
Good luck

Does the machine have an actual sound card, or just on-board audio (i.e., built into the motherboard)?

^^^
Good question, Harri.
Because if imak's friend is using on-board audio, there's a chance that it's been (inadvertently) disabled in the BIOS.

I thought it was an actual card, because it looked like a hardware item, but I could be wrong

Have you run dxdiag from start>run?
It has tests for how your sound is working. One goofy thing might be that it will work after you fuss with the slider that controls hardware acceleration for sound.

@imak
Just FWI, FWIW:
A chipset is the complex of silicon chips on a motherboard or add-on card -- in the case of a sound card, those that process sound. It's hardware.
A driver is a mini-program that enables hardware (in this case, the sound card) to work. It's software.
