Im hoping this doesn't get moved to Tech Talk because not many people check that forum. BUT, does anyone know of any sites that shoot their video on a DSLR, like a Canon 7D or 5D Mark II, etc? Those, and cheaper versions, shoot 1080p video now and the output is very nice. You have to use an external mic because the mic on the camera is kinda meh, but it's like that with a lot of pro HD cams. At school, we shot some stuff on a 7D and it came out quite nicely, minus the sound problem.
I'm just curious about this because I think it's a cool concept and it's very economical if it works since not everyone can afford a super badass HD camcorder, but some of these cameras are under $1,000 and double as great stills cameras. Any thoughts or opinions? thanks.

I've been shooting everything on the Canon 5D mark ii for the last few months. If go to ZTOD.com and look for scenes from Kittens and Cougars 3 or PornStar bootcamp. they were all shot with it. We have a big feature coming out in September that's a combo of the 5D and 35mm film and you can hardly tell the difference. It's an absolutely amazing camera however, after you outfit it with a shoulder mount, follow focus, LCD monitor or viewfinder adapter and some decent lenses, you can be looking at upwards of 7k for the whole package so it's really not much cheaper than a Panasonic HVX200 or Sony XDCAM EX. It is revolutionizing the film business. The season finale of House was shot entirely on the 5D with a 24-70mm lens and 70-200mm lens. It's the B-camera of choice for many feature films now. It's only downside is the H.264 compression. If it could shoot raw files, it would be better than the RED camera. New Sensations is also shooting a lot with the 5D. I'm sure the list of companies using it will only get longer however, it does require a lot more skill than an auto-focus point and shoot camcorder.
AND the on-board audio isn't that bad actually if you buy a decent microphone but for anything other than moans and groans and basic "Hi, how are ya" dialogue, recording separate sound is a must.

Video is a cool option to have on a DSLR, but it's not a replacement for a video camera.

With all of the aftermarket accessories available from companies like redrock micro, Zacuto and Marshall, the 5D absolutely replaces my XDCAM EX. There are certainly drawbacks which are mentioned in the article but there is a work-around for all of them (except timecode). The control over depth of field is what videographers have hoped for for eons. Also, anytime you use the gain function on a video camera, you are seriously degrading the image. You can shoot in almost total darkness at 6400 ISO with almost zero noise. Try that with a video camera.

thanks for the info Mike. I'll definitely check out what you mentioned. Yeah, my friend with the 7D uses one of those LCDVF's to help with focusing and just basically blowing up the image off of the 3" LCD screen. I read about the House finale being filmed on a 5D. The intro to last season's SNL was shot on a 5D as well, I believe. That's pretty amazing that all of this can be done on a DSLR. The focusing and stuff would be something to get used to and everything but this is intriguing me now because if I got a better DLSR, I could do HD AND have a killer camera. Killing two birds with one stone. Hmmm.

Pop Photo also ran stories recently about doing video on a DSLR. There was more info on the accessories in the print version of the article, which ran a month or so back.

I use a boom mic and have the audio recorded separately. Only problem with that is you constantly have to sync audio. I could be wrong but I think Mike might be using one of the BeachTek adapters for an XLR mic.

Hey Chode,
I like photograpy a lot but more the coffee table collecting book part, lol.
What kind of school do you do? Do you want to be a photographer when you are a big chode?
7d is a cool camera, it would be my choice to buy. But to be honest, I rather use that money to buy (designer) clothing.
Hm, you didn't do anything with my advise? How disappointing!!!!

Anyways,
as to sites you are looking for, what about this:
http://www.pornpros.com/episode/?episode=2505
No way that stuff is shot with a pro-cam or profesionally edited to make it look like cheap (point&shoot/DLRS like) vids.
Cheers, Bud.

My bad for not responding to that other post man. I'm sorry. I'll respond to it right after I finish this one.
I'm going to school for Communications/Film and I do photography as a hobby. The 7D looks really nice, but I've read reviews of the Rebel T2i that put it up there with the 7D in terms of specs and quality and it's about half the price. If I had the money though, I'd get a 5D Mark II, but I'm a poor college student. haha. I think the option of having full HD video capabilities on a camera would be very neat. A lot of photojournalists are using them for that. That's what I read at least. I'd like to be involved in Film when I graduate in a year (fingers crossed), so hopefully there will be jobs and a market available for it then and that it won't be over saturated with people.
I'd love love love to be involved with porn somehow but people I know from the industry on here have said it's a bad time to try and get involved with porn right now due to the crash of the dvd market and everything. Idk. I just wanna be happy with whatever I do. haha. I could always shoot porn low key around here, but I need a good camera first. That's partially what this thread was about. haha. Getting a good D-SLR that does video and good pics would be like killing two birds with one stone and save me some money. We'll see though. I'm still researching it...
Thanks for the info everyone!

If you're short on cash you might want to consider to get a cheaper body but real good lenses. Makes more of a difference imho.
But then again I'm not shooting video with my camera and probably never will even if my next body offers the feature so I don't know if these features are worth getting the 7D over the Rebel T2i...

Thanks malte. I always appreciate your input. I'm still debating all of this and I've gotta look at my finances and shit, but I'll probably get the T2i if I get anything. that's under $1,000 and that's about all I can afford. who knows. This has definitely piqued my interest, though. A way to take pics AND shoot porn in HD? Niiiice. I need some models too though. haha.

Nah, I changed my major last summer and all I've got left are my film classes, so I should graduate with a Bachelors in a year or so. I'm way better at this than relativity and all that shit, which I still find very interesting.

I've shot about six movies now with the CANON 5D MKII. Double system sound using a Marantz deck and 'old school' marker for post-sync. Works great. I shot on 35mm film for 20 years. Even owned my own Arri BL4 system.
Shot the first one about the same time last year, even before 23.98 was available.
I just intercut the footage from the CANON 5D MKII with 35mm footage I shot five years ago. It's beautiful. I'm glad to say we won't be lugging a 60 pound movie camera around anymore.
FYI the 35mm footage was shot on Arri BL4, telecine was on a Spirt to D5 4:4:4. That's a heavy weight telecine done at Fotokem. The fact that the Canon kept up under most circumstances is unsettling! It can have moray in some cases though so be careful with that extreme detail.
Also, if you really want your 5D footage to LOOK great do double-system sound with a great field deck and good mics like Sennheiser. Then post sync. If it sounds strange that I said LOOK great... when your soundtrack is good your images will 'look' even better. That's why music videos with poor image quality can look so good!

How long before Harbor Freight Tools starts selling knockoffs of those $1400 sets of aluminum tubing for like $29.95, with a free blue tarp and ten rolls of teflon plumbing tape?

^LOL I've lost count of the times I've wanted to build my own accessories. Actually done it quite a bit. I had an old monopod and I drilled holes in the bottom and mounted a few weights. Makes a great poor man's Steady Tracker!

Gary: I assume you have worked on 35mm in mainstream productions? Or is it in porn aswell? I have never heard of anyone shooting porn on 35 on a regular basis.

That is actually a good place to get tools. The things I have bought from them are of reasonably high quality and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, the only camera they sell is at the end of a plumbing snake and would not be any good for making porn.

Sooooo, I'm taking the plunge next week and getting a Canon Rebel T2i, which shoots full HD and has been reviewed as being comparable to the 7D for about half the price. It's the best I can afford right now, as well. I'm getting that as well as a Hoodman Cinema Kit, which has an LCD magnifier to help with pulling focus and all that stuff.
Next will be a Zoom H4n recorded for the sound, but that's about a month or two off since between the camera, lens hood/mount, and 2 SD cards, I'm gonna be strapped for cash for a little while, factor in paying off the rest of this semester's tuition and I'm poor for a while.
I've contacted two t-girls in Houston about doing something. I said photos or a solo video or whatever they wanted but haven't heard back yet from either. I'll keep on trying and sending out feelers to the girls who I'd like to shoot. Cross your fingers that someone bites because I've got some ideas that I'd like to try that I think would look good. I got 1000 niiiiiice, great quality business cards made, too, for my photography side business that I'm trying to get going really well so I can ditch Walmart and just do photography. Fuck Walmart. Cross your fingers on that too. I'm also gonna start on my first of three Super 8 films for my Film Production class this semester, so I'm psyched about that.
That was a little rant, but it was all photography-related. haha. Any opinions on any of it?

I'm not a cameraman, so I didn't play around with it, but I was on set because between this and the other card based media cameras, workflow was a little complicated. Therefore I had to dump media to a drive each day of the shoot. The show is American Ninja Warrior 2.

I know this thread has been quiet for sometime now but figured I would drop in and mention that the next movie coming out from Jenna Haze's company Jennaration X Studios titled "Legs Up Hose Down" was shot entirely with DSLRS.
I know a lot of people are shooting dialogue etc with these types of cameras but I think this might be one of the first gonzos shot entirely with them..... I might be wrong so someone can correct me if I am.
I think the quality and look of this movie is superb and I think viewers will be able to tell a big difference off the bat

^I don't know Van. I like the way Jenna's movies look now. I get extremely apprehensive when someone says they're trying something new. Some HD cameras' pictures can look great when they're still, but when things move around it can become quite nauseating. I like smooth motion and lifelike feel to my movies. Very few directors/companies can deliver that anymore. I've mentioned Jenna, Jules, Erik, Mike John, CStreams, and a couples of other studios do but I'm not too enthusiastic about anyone else.
I'm praying this movie comes out as good as you say.

I hear what you are saying, I would say it's same camera movement you are use to in a Jenna Haze movie but better imagery. I have been shooting some tease segment stuff with this camera for Jenna since they came out so it wasn't something we just threw out there and winged it.
I know Jenna cares a ton about putting out a quality product for her fans and if she had any doubts about this she wouldn't have given the green light to shoot the whole movie with these cameras.

Nice. I was just thinking about bumping this topic.
That's cool news Van. I'll def have to keep my eye out for that movie. That's interesting that other studios are starting to notice some of the advantages of DSLRs now. What cam is it shot with?
So you still haven't gone back to a regular video camera Mike? That's awesome! I shot a wedding with a buddy of mine. We just did it where we filmed things like the ceremony, of course, but also mixing in a lot with the crowd in the reception and everything. He was going to edit it together into a 4 or 5 minute short film for the bride and groom. He shot his on a 7D and I shot mine on a Rebel T2i. The low light abilities were very cool. During the reception i had my lens on f/1.8 and it worked very well.
In one of my Film Productions classes this semester we're required to shoot a project on Super 8, which seems very archaic considering that the quality absolutely sucks and you can't tell if what you captured looks good until you ship the film off to be developed and get it back and view it. I'm doing a project about long distance love over the internet and judging on the quality of our previous group project on Super 8, I know it's not going to fulfill the vision that I want to get across. What I'm gonna do is while I have the actors there to get all my shots in various locations I'm going to do some takes on my DSLR to use for an HD version of the film that I'm going to put together. I wanted to use a lot of night shots, but Kodak only makes 2 kinds of Super 8 film...color and black and white...and they're NOT very sensitive to light at all, so all the night shots and low light work i wanted to do can't be done on Super 8 basically. That's where the DSLR will come in handy and I won't be as constrained with options like I would be on a 30 year old Super 8 camera. I'm pretty excited about it.

ChodeMasterJ- I am sure the trailer for Legs Up Hose Down will be available soon over at www.julesjordanvideo.com. I think the SD version of this looks far better then anything I have previously done camera with and I was using a Sony EX 1 for the past few years.
I shot this with the 5D Mark II and the 60D. I got a amazing custom rig that makes a dslr feel like a video camera, which is what was my biggest grip about shooting video with these things when they first came out.
Jenna has definitely developed a great eye for directing along with attention to details in outfits and locations so mix those elements with these cameras and there is something pretty cool there.

My daughter is in film school and she's presently shooting 16mm which also seems archaic to me. I bought her a 5D and she hasn't even had an opportunity to use it yet.
Next year by the time NAB rolls around you'll see a ton of new video cameras incorporating big DSLR-type sensors and the ability to use cine lenses which will render all of this expensive aftermarket crap we've had to buy to use the 5D and 7D absolutely useless.

The trailer's file name has the name of the movie wrong: legs_up_hoes_down.mp4. While I'm sure "Legs Up Hoes Down" would be a fine title for, say, a Wesley Pipes joint, I don't think it's what Ms. Haze has in mind for this movie. Somebody might want to double-check the box art before it gets sent to the printer . . .

Yeah, I agree. I can understand wanting to know the prior forms of film production. That can help round you out and make you a better cinematographer no matter what medium you shoot on. BUT at the same time, I think we should be learning more about up-to-date stuff (HD especially) because when you go on a set or make your own movie, you're not gonna be filming on Super 8 or 16mm. It'll be HD or 35mm. My University, which isn't huge or anything...it's got about 14,000 students, has one or two HD cams and they're not even pro-grade. We're talking the Canon's that are consumer grade, not even prosumer grade. We've done a semester on Super 8 and I think that could be used on much better things. That's just me.
That's awesome that you got her a 5D! I wish my dad would have bought me one. haha. I'm happy with my T2i, but I haven't gotten to use it as much as i've liked yet. I kinda put myself in a little bit of debt buying it too, but oh well. I'd like to get a Zoom h4n mic for it, but that's $300 i don't have. My buddy has one and they're amazing. I can't wait for those days to come around when you don't need all the aftermarket stuff to get the most out of shooting video on a DSLR. :)
