They only tolerate them!

Case in Point:
PLAYBOY magazine September 1998

The Smartest Women in Porn

(Nina Hartley)

Playboy: You once said that you don’t “draw the weird kind of crowd” Isn’t anyone who idolizes a porn star sort of cracked?

Hartley: There are two kinds of fans. There are the kinds of fans who don’t have a life and never will have a life. Then there is the regular guy who likes to masturbate every now and again, or he and his wife like to watch me. He wants to meet the person that has brought him so much pleasure. Those aren’t cracked people. Pornography can make monogamy easier to handle. You go through periods where you need it more.

I was curious where I fit in? I am not married; so does that mean that I am a cracked loser? I must not have a life because I like porn?

Actually, it is rarer for the married couple to watch porn together to help their marriage in my estimation. I do not consider myself a slack-jawed/coke-bottle bottom glasses wearing/knuckle scraping/drooling loser; which I think most porners think that their fans are, you know (fans) the people who actually buy the videos. Ashley Blue does not like her fans. Neither does Brianna Blaze or Taylor Raine to name a few, of many.

I was curious what opinions are of this?

My thought is that porners’ look at the people that buy their videos and come to the signings etc. as a necessary evil and view them with borderline veiled contempt and disgust. Keeping in mind, if we did not buy the videos and pump them up on newsgroups et al than they would not exist.

I think that is true to a degree as I've met some porn stars who were quite rude to me. But I've known some porn stars who really do care about fans as people and not just so that they will just buy their products. They go much farther than needed just to make some of us happy.

Who would you say are the porn stars that seem to be friendly with the fans and treat them well at the shows? Just wondering which porns stars are out there that are having a good time and genuinely enjoy meeting the fans in person?

Anyone with a life shouldn't care how pornstars feel or treat their fans. People should be happy watching their favorite girls fuck on screen. I'm not saying people shouldn't go to conventions if you want to meet them, but how they feel about their fans shouldn't affect anyone's day to day life. Who care?!

Just my opiniion of course

I'm pretty sure not a single fan has ever had a complaint when meeting Belladonna. Even the ones who find it necessary to grope her body like she enjoys it.

I think that, generally speaking, porn stars care about their fans. There may be exceptions, but the average porn star cares.

But you can't be nice 24/7, and if you go up to a performer and don't get the level of politeness you would have expected, remember that you may be the 100th person today. Everybody needs a break sometimes. And, of course, we all know what nuisance some fans can be like....

BTW, I think what Nina Hartley does in the interview is generalizing. You shouldn't feel insulted if you as a person don't fit in in her description. After all, she doesn't know you personally...

As in any group that you want to pick, there is going to be a spectrum.

For this instance, one end of the spectrum would be performers that don't like, or don't care for their fans and think them a nuisance. At the other end are those that like their fans very much and seek feedback and/or interaction from them.

The title to the thread, "Porn Stars Do No Like Their Fans!" is a broad generalized statement, and is wrong by the very nature of the broad brush that it paints performers with.

I agree with pornopunk. Who the fuck cares what they think. I'd go so much as to say you should blow off the conventions. Porn whores provide a fantasy, and they should stay in fantasy.

Honestly, I can't blame those stars who have such an attitude.
I also think this isn't restricted to porn stars.
I wonder what the usual athlete, movie star, author, politician, ... has to say about fans after giving autographs to strangers.

Fans who should get a life, are not restricted to the habitate of porn (and science fiction) fandom either.

I remember hiking in the mountains, when a German actor of some fame was approached by some 60+ year old groupies.
A pack of teenage girls meeting a New Kid from the block would have acted in a more civilised manner, I guess.

Boy, I would have understood if he killed 'em, but he stayed friendly. I mean you go into the mountains to enjoy a little bit of quietness and distance from the world.

It looked like that quote was very quick and didn't really explain her point. Perhaps she was trying to impress the mainstream airbrush crowd?

Honestly I don't care if a porn star respects the fans or not. If their rude to fans or if it shows up in the performances word gets around and their marketability drops to nil and they disappear.

I'm pretty sure I don't like you,I think you have an agenda since you signed up new to 2 boards and posted the same shit.
but I love conventions and I love feeling special

side note:
I met Jerome Bettis at the mall and he signed 2 autographs for me and got mobbed by kids and spent like 2 hours signing shit and being shoved about.

I met Dion Sanders when I was a kid and he was at FSU. He was a total prick and made a kid cry. I hate him. A lot. I have rooted against him in any team he played on. I smile when he gets hit.

I hold my bettis autograph anytime the steelers play.

Rio Mariah corresponded with me several times via e-mail. Very nice girl with a good head on her shoulders, and interesting too.

Like anywhere in this F'd world, there are good and bad people, regardless of occupation or status.

What you learn in life is that you associate yourself with people you are drawn towards, and who are drawn towards you. If it doesn't work, move on with no hard feelings.

BTW: Kami, I've tried contacting you several times and you never got back to me!. &#@*!

1.) It only seems to be an interview with Nina Hartley speaking for herself.

2.) Some do and some don't, just like any entertainer (movies, music, athletes, whatever people want autographs for).

3.) A person has a right to their own life. Some days fans intrude too much.

4.) Nobody should spend much time worrying about how others see them. With obvious exceptions (boss - year end review, customer base, etc.) it will impact life little.

5.) Most fans or customers never meet porn stars and probably don't think about it. They rent/buy based on looks or action. In other words, they don't think about the porn star as a person, just an image on video. Why would this not be returned by some?

6.) Every industry with female 'icons' spawns divas/bitches. Just part of the territory. Shouldn't label every woman in that industry that way.

7.) Do the people at McDonalds love each and every customer?

i agree with pornopunk. why give a shit what your fave porn stars think of you. let's say you like a song. let's say you meet the artist who did the song and he is a piece of shit, personality-wise. does the music suddenly suck? no. i ain't into the people, i am into the product.

plus, you could easily flip the script on Nina Hartley and be like: there are two kinds of pornstars. there are the kind who are screwed up and will always be screwed up. then there is the regular girl who likes sex every now and again, and wants to do it on camera for money.

The quotation that started this thread was taken completely out of context and presented in a manner that misrepresents Nina completely. Here's what I wrote to Luke Ford about it:

This comment seems to imply that Nina is among the porn stars who dislike their fans and regard them as a "necessary evil." As a regular visitor to Nina's site, you can't possibly believe those are her opinions. Contact with the public is one of the real pleasures of Nina's career. She's correctly regarded as one of the most fan-friendly performers in the industry. Over the years, she has developed many lasting friendships with viewers of her work and never passes up an opportunity to give full credit for her success to their love and loyalty. Frankly, I see nothing in the Playboy quotation that supports any allegation to the contrary.

To portray her views otherwise is simply inaccurate and, in this case, genuinely hurtful.

Any of the literally tens of thousands of fans who have met Nina personally will testify to the warm welcome she invariably extends to them all.

If you're looking for a porn star who doesn't like her fans, you've got the wrong girl.

Personally, Nina Hartley has always recognized me and my ex every time that she's ever seen us and always makes it a point to take her and time and talk to us and sort of counsel us on our relationship, even if it means her other fans have to wait. Nina always made us feel comfortable around her and treated us like old friends each time she saw us. Maybe that makes me one of the married uncracked people.

Kami, suprisingly, picked me out of a freakin' crowd this January without ever seeing me in person before. I agree with her that Isabel Ice is about as nice a pornstar as you're ever going to meet. Adorable, that one.

Not all pornstars hate their fans. In fact, I'd wager the majority of them don't. But I'm sure there's a certain TYPE of fan that they all hate and who can blame'em? I do, too.

Here's two more of my cents.

I love porn, but I 've never understood pornstar groupies. Some guys travel across the country and spend hundreds of dollars just for an autograph. I understand doing that if your going to a concert or sporting event were you can actually see the performers in action. Once again, I'm not saying people should blow off conventions. If your into that sort of thing, go for it. Just try to keep things in prospective. If you spend the time and money to meet these pornstars, is it really their fault if they're not what you expect them to be. After all, porn is fantasy...

Man, I can tell you a few who are incredible people to be around, including Kami, and Isabel. They are as easy and comfortable to horse around with as your favorite drinking buddies -- if your drinking buddies were, like, absurdly hot. They are also smarter than your drinking buddies. Katin, totally real and a fun tomboy. Melissa, very friendly and intriguing (to me), but I seem to get the shy attack around her. Jayna and Katja, open and friendly ... Julie Night, ridiculously warm ... She;s not around here so much anymore, but Selena Silver was extremely gracious. Ariana Jollee, she may love her fans more than anyone.

But, you know, it's give and take, and a lot of people think it's mostly about take. You don';t have to be a slavering fanboy, just treat people with respect and intelligence like you would if you met someone at a party and you have something in common to talk about. Just because it's porn doesn't mean as a fan you have to act stupid (though, gee, there's a lot of slack for that, too).

I never hated any fans.
Not that I have all that many hungering for my attention, but I suppose I have more than the average woman living in Cleveland. Just because I never hated any fans doesn't mean I answered every intrusive, impolite, or just downright vulgar email. It doesn't mean I agreed to do anything with, sell anything to, or interact in any way. All fans are not created equal. Since I don't receive any continuing benefit from the sales of videos I have performed in, it doesn't really matter to me if fans purchase more of my videos. I'm not going to get hired significantly more just because 100 more pieces of that particular title sold. I'm not going to get hired significantly less if people talk mean about me in online forums, either.

You missed part of what you yourself quoted:
Then there is the regular guy who likes to masturbate every now and again

Does that maybe describe you?

I think the problem lays in the fact that Nina was most likely describing THREE types of porn fans, not two.

1- no life
2- likes to masturbate
3- watches porn with significant other

Oh- and I think, for me, CJ hit it perfectly. I think that a lot of porn girls are OK with their fans, but that there is a certain type of unbearable, truly obnoxious porn fan that kind of grates on all of us.

Hello,

When i started reading from the top i wanted to write a few things. But as i went along a lot of good points had been said by others. I just want to add this. Porn conventions are usually not held in my area. So if i actually wanted to see a "star" in person i would have to travel a lot of miles to go there. But what would i gain from this ? The few times i´ve been to "autograph" signings in my area i can count with my fingers and toes. Those "gatherings" mostly were like this or like a "feeding the pigs" kinda event. You couldn´t talk to the girl more than "what name" she was supposed to write on the autograph. I stoped going there at all. The best meetings i can think of were when i met Gina Wild and Laura Angel. While Gina visited an Erotic Store Laura was at a sales event at a wholesaler. I actually could talk a few minutes to them and both had been very friendly. If only i had a camera with me ...

Porn is fantasy made by people and a lot off this fantasy can get ruined on conventions. That´s why i´m not visiting any anymore + a few other reasons . If you don´t have a life and the "few" things get destroyed too what more is there ?

@ escrow:

not neccessarily but i would review my "liking" this artist. I don´t knowingly support assholes

@ Kami

I know excactly what you mean

Last but not least, perhaps fueled by an adoration of the fans who got them where they are in the biz. From the few emails & emotion put behind her emails, I'd like to add Cynara (Fox) to that list. After not having produced anything for the past year (give or take), she appears anxious about her return to the industry - in whatever capacity that may be - and all thanks to the fans who've stuck by her during her hiatus from the industry.

My $.02...

Echoes of the William Shatner "get a life" trekkies speech.

So far as outrageously broad generalisations go, I think that Nina was probably right on the mark. However, we all know that broad generalisations are not worth the crappy magazines they are written in!

It is the blurred lines and the shades of gray that make life so interesting - in fact I make it a point to avoid classification as part of any identifiable group of individuals!

I didn't find any of the stars that I met in Las Vegas to be either rude or dismissive. Despite the ridiculous crowds, the ladies I went to see were polite, personable and real. I came away well satisfied that the people that I talked to really did reflect the personalities I saw on screen. But maybe that's the point. If you go looking for fuck-dolls you might get a rude reception. If you recognize that you are watching individuals having sex in porn then when you get the chance to meet them you'll treat them with the respect they deserve as fellow human beings, and they'll reciprocate.

And, +1 for Kimi, as usual.

I met Nina at a video store when she was promoting her How-to videos. She was great, she seemed a little tired, and I think it was near the end of her tour but she was very friendly and talkative and actually encouraged people to grab her butt. She answered all requests for pics-like putting her foot on a guys face and bouncers from the bar next door lifting her up for a photo. I got the impression she was having a good time. And this was right after Boogie Nights so an inflated ego might have been expected but it wasn't there.
I met Christy Canyon at a strip club and she was really friendly as well. I saw Stephanie Swift too. Don't know how she feels about her fans but she appeared strung out.

From my point of view as I had the chance to meet some of our czech porn actors, mostly girls on the shows etc., they are always nice and friendly, they wont say you anything bad when you stop them at the show for a few words :-)). I think they are not seeking for fans but they are always nice to them. Thats my little experience.

But as I had the chance and honor to meet a few foreign actors, listen folks, Steve Holmes is the best man on this planet when speaking of porn fans. He is so nice and has a great personality. He loves his fans, thats absolutely true.

Speaking of types of porn fans I would classify myself as non-regular watcher who enjoys watching the porn, who likes
pretty nice girls...etc

Watching the porn is a way of relaxing for me.

I watch porn mostly because its funny and I can relax from hard work, everydays life rush etc. Im definitely NOT always masturbating nor even jerking off while watching. Of course sometimes I do.

Additionally I like the whole bussiness, watching movies and keeping an eye on it, keeping myself informed, being updated etc,. - its a part of my hobby.
I like it, I like ppl doing this bussiness, I like watching nice girls,...etc.
And surely I have the favorites which I always dont hesite to give them a credit.

Thats all why Im here!
Peace!

Mr. Peter

Exactly! At feature shows and signings I look around and see porn fans I don't like either. We're not the easiest bunch to like. I'm always asking tedious questions, for example (though I couldn't care less about anal, so nobody has to worry about me asking when they'll do this or that type of anal). And I've also noticed that most porn fans' hair isn't quite right--it's "off" somehow. I'm sure that can be disconcerting to pornstars who devote so much energy to their appearance.

I can echo that sentiment. I'm nuts! who would want to meet me. I'm a writer, engineer, thinker, philospher. my mind is in 12 different places at once. I can barely hold a conversation with myself let alone someone else

but seriously there are a lot of people even on this fourm that I don't want to address, if I was in the business I sure as hell wouldn't want to meet them.

I've been writting quite awhile now even though I'm still young and I've made friends of a few women who I did interviews with while they were still making film. I still talk to them to this day and only occasionally have they remembered how we started talking and how long it's been.

it's all about who you are and how you present yourself. I'm not saying you can make life long friends with a woman in the adult business, but just like life being yourself and being honest is always the way.

among the women I'd love to meet would be Tricia D. so I can ask her for job I love being an engineer, but damn how could I turn down working for the Empire would LOVE to meet Kami Andrews and see if that smile is as beautiful in real life as it is on film. Belladonna so she can sign my copy of The Fashionistas , and yes Tricia you can sign it too
Arianna Jollee so I can tell her that face to face that she isn't a "filthy Jew," and whoever said that about her she shouldn't give any thought to. and of course I'd enjoy meeting Ms. Hartley to have a sit down and talk with her on her life and career.

maybe that makes me a crazed fan too, but I've got a string of people I'd enjoy meeting both dead and alive. so does that make me a crazed porn fan or just crazed in general?

Personally i like when an actress or actor or even a team care about there fan, having a website and offer to signe autograph for free(you just have to pay the postal service of the thing you ship to be signe) and when you have the possibility to meet them and have a little chat and they enjoy it. But i talk here about actor and actress of normal movie. The one you sometime identified as a "hero" in a tv show, for exemple Buffy the vampire slayer or Angel, Angel is for ma a very important character, im a big fan of this serie and if i would have to meet David Boreanaz, and have the possiblity to talk to him and if he would have not like the fans, i would have be somehow disapointed, and i don`t know if i would have like the serie so much again. Gladly the Buffy and Angel actors and crew are very friendly in conference etc (from what i seen) but what i tried to say its if one of your favorite actor would turn to be be a person who don`t like people etc...you could look at him very differently in the futur in his movie.

But for porn personally i can`t say...i watch porn when i am alone, to have so personal pleasure, its better than nothing...but i don`t care much about how they are in real life, i don`t identify myself to porn actor or actress lol they go on camera, suck, fuck etc and i ejaculate and thats it, its done.

True, He's been known to play entire concerts with his back turned to the audeince/fans. Wasn't unusual for him to walk off the stage whenever he felt like it also. Those facts certainly haven't dimminished his proffesional accomplishments though.
With conventions like Adult con, Erotic LA, ect., porn stars are far more accesible to their fans than rock stars, or main stream movie star counterparts. Also, experiencing the work of a porn star (jerking off to a DVD) can be far more "intimate" than, say going to a Jon Tesh concert, watching Brittney Spears sing karaoke at Dimples , or watching a Clippers game. Those factors IMO contribute to a fans sense of "entitlement", when he/she actually meets one. Not good or bad, it just is.
Ultimately, our work is not done in a vaccuum, and we should take the time to show fans, the end users, our appreciation. All of us are replaceable (some of us have a shorter 1/2 life than others). This can easily be done without infringing on our quality of life. I regularly send em' free product like DVD's, or more recently, autographed copys of this months Playgirl, which I'm in. I actually sent some girl in the UK some product today. Little things like that may mean nothing to us, but I'ts a big deal to them, and it goes a long way. Those who serve, deserve.
My 2 cents...
