Most stores still sell those flicks for $40, $50, or even in Gamelink's case, $60! Wow! That's 100% profit over retail for Gamelink! They must be raking in the dough!

Catalina's Truckstop Daddy has a "list price" of $45.00 on the Catalina web site, is "on sale" for $22.50 on their site (for the next 6 days), and is available at XRentDVD for $49.99 (that's 11% above list) and at Adult DVD Universe for $37.49 (a discount of 16.67%). Gay titles are too expensive and they do not have to be. I understand that the lower volume of sales compared to straight titles means a somewhat higher cost; however, there is no excuse in the disparity of price that exists. ~ GaySatyr I note that XRentDVD has lowered their price for this title (& other Catalina titles) to $44.99 - good move! I'd like to add that GameLink has Catalina's Boy Band listed at $59.95 - a whopping 33% above Catalina's list price of $45.00!!! This is a serious rip-off and an affront to their gay customers. Companies with pricing practices such as this do not deserve out patronage! Edited by - GaySatyr on Jul 3 2003 [Link] |

MSRP for premium gay titles range from about $45 to a stratospheric $90 for a single DVD! This is ludicrous. There is no excuse whatsoever for such prices other than pure greed on the parts of everyone from producer to distributor to marketer (both on-line and bricks & mortar). To add insult to injury, many on-line retailers basically ignore their gay customers. They send gay customers email advertisements and announcements of deals or promotions aimed at their straight audience and expect their gay customers to take the bait - at highway robbery prices, no less. What's more, most on-line retailers have very poor breadth and depth to their gay titles catalog - often showcasing last year's titles at high prices. There are exceptions: Adult (Gay) DVD Empire, TLA Video, GameLink, and, to a lesser extent, XRentDVD have a great many gay titles available. But their prices are still sky-high. I wait for sales, use coupons, use ADT kickback dollars, and place large orders in an attempt to cut prices to the bone. And I spend a lot of money. The sad thing is that if one or two of the on-line retailers were more willing to deal, I'd spend a great deal more money and be a very loyal customer. As it is, I'm managing to keep prices relatively under control: On average, I'm spending about $35 for titles which have an MSRP of $60 - essentially a 40% discount. I can't believe that anyone in the gay porn food chain is losing money at that price - they just aren't making the high profits they'd like to make. ~ GaySatyr |

While there is a slight difference between retailers pricing of gay DVD's, the bottom line is the same. Gay product is much more expensive to buy for us--whether it be from a wholesaler or direct from the studio. As I'm sure you can tell, this handcuffs the retailers from a pricing standpoint unless the retailer is willing to take a hit on their markup--which is already significantly less than with straight DVD's. No big secret here, mainstream studios do exactly the same thing. As far as not catering to the gay customer, I disagree when it comes to the Empire. We offer our gay customers a complete site with GayDVDEmpire. The site includes mainstream gay/lesbian titles, in-house reviews on not only movies but sex toys as well, and a separate newsletter complete with gay product oriented deals and coupons. I'm not trying to grandstand here, I just wanted to let you know that if you are trying to lower the cost of your enjoyment, you may want to set your sites at a different target. As always, if you would like to discuss this matter further, please feel free to email me anytime. Best Regards, |

You, and the folks at TLA Video and GameLink offer many special services directed at the gay market. You maintain an extensive catalog of gay titles. (I did say that you were among the exceptions in my rant post, above.) And I DO realize that that your costs are extremely high on gay titles - you are at the end of the chain of producers and distributors. My occasional soapbox rants are directed at everyone in the chain from studios/producers on down. One of the worst-case examples is the Falcon family of studios. Their MSRP of up to $90 for their titles is so over the top as to be comical. However, every once in a while, some of their DVDs (including their Director's Cut versions) show up on sale through one of the on-line retailers for as low as $30~35 per disc. And we are not talking about titles that have been remaindered, either; so there is room to maneuver somewhere. If I pressure you, maybe that increases your incentive to negotiate a better deal with Falcon or Studio 2000 or Pacific Sun or Catalina or ... you get the idea. If Catalina can afford to do a 50%-off sale on their website, then they can afford to negotiate with you as well. ~ GaySatyr |
| HoldenMagroin Member Baking in the California Heat 122 Posts 2/03 | I got a mass e-mailing from DVDAdvantage today advertising that they have slashed their prices on gay titles 25%. They claimed it was not a sale, but a permanent price cut. I don't know how their prices were before on gay titles, but thought I would pass it along. It seems they are making an effort. Maybe your rant got through to them. I will say that their prices on straight titles are generally higher than other on-line stores, but they are slowly bringing them down.
