The Quote function still works, you just have to know how to use it. There's too many people that misuse it so we decided to remove the icon. It may be a slight inconvenience for some but it should help clean up many threads.
In another thread, you wrote that you would be implementing some BBcode options to the forum soon. Will the bbcode format of quoting someone with (quote="Drew"), with brackets instead of ellipses, be included in those options?

Thanks. If this looks right then I understand. It is too bad that there isn't a nifty short cut for typing "quote" and "/quote". This takes longer for me than clicking the quote icon. Oh well.
Honestly, I haven't really seen much serious "abuse" of the quote feature around here. Every once in a while, I see a whole page of text quoted with a sentence of response. I generally try and cut out what isn't necessary. But sometimes, if what I quoted isn't long and I'm pressed for time, I figure it's no big deal. I think it's really nitpicky to complain if someone quoted an extra two sentences or something and you have to scroll an extra two clicks on your mouse. Big deal. As long as I've been posting here, I don't remember ever being upset about it. What I've seen mostly were mistakes people made when quoting and they apparently didn't notice or people who got in a hurry and just quoted everything.

For me, the most irritating "abuse" is not people quoting too much but people lazily hitting the quote button to a post that already had a quote in it, leading eventually to posts with quotes inside quotes inside quotes inside quotes, so that the text disappears into the distance and it becomes difficult to see who is replying how and to what
i'm just going to respond as if the quote were there, and if my post seems like a non sequitur or nobody knows who i'm responding to that's too bad. i blame drew.
It's not so much a server load issue. (Though the forum database is currently running about 1.2GB of data.) It's a readability issue. Quoting should be used to emphasize or respond to particular portions of a post. It should not be used to simply add "+1" to the entire contents of the 14 previously quoted posts. (For whatever reason this seems to happen in IR-themed threads all the time.)
I agree it's a nuisance. That's the point. We're trying to discourage the misuse of the quoting feature. Too many users look at it as a "reply to this entire post" feature.

For those of you who want the icon know that I am the bad guy. I friggin hate it. There are people that I've asked multiple times to simply stop using it because they quote quotes of quotes of entire posts. They keep doing it anyway. So either I start banning people who quote quotes of quotes or we remove the icon. I think removing the icon is the nicer option.
Then there's the problem of people who quote entire posts and put their own words randomly in the quote so you have no idea who said what. This always happens in the contentious threads that I have to read.
And, btw, if you want to respond to someone you can use their name. A quote is not required.
Firefox has an extension called "Paste Quote". When you right click, you can hit the usual cut, copy, paste, etc. but there is also a paste quote menu item that automatically puts the copied text into the brackets.
The thing that people who don't know how to quote properly do, that bugs the shit out of me is when they quote someone and insert their comments inside the body of the quoted text, without adding the end-quote before their comments, followed by a quote before the text of the original post resumes.
the advantage of quoting is having the text in the reply box with you to address specific points. well, for me at least. and i always cull the unnecessary parts of the quote.
Of course that's an advantage. We recognize that and it's not in dispute. Removing the reply with quote icon is a pain in the ass. Now people will have to make an effort to quote posts.
Unfortunately there are more posters that misused the reply-with-quote feature than those that used it properly.
maybe you can sneak it in so only the initiated--those who read this thread--will know how to use it. and disguise it as 'the fart button' or something that no one is interested in pressing. possibly 'the non-misogynistic porn button'. that way, everyone but skronker will be quoting correctly, and noobs will be forever lost.
or, perhaps only the posting elite--2K+--can use it. and every thousand posts gives you access to more features. basically, croy will be moderating the entire forum and doing your job for you.
It's all a question of style, both composition and presentation.
I compose replies by pressing the Quote button to get the full text of the original message, and getting it already formatted for a reply with user name, indentation, etc. Then I edit out the parts of the original post not needed for context and add my text, using the original as a guide.
Presentation just means that I like to include some context of what I am saying in reply to and to whom, and the Quote markup's familiar format is probably to best way to do it.
Without a Quote button I have to select & copy the original text with a mouse, scroll the screen to find a Reply button somewhere, add in the quote markups, and add the username manually to attribute the original text.

You do not need to quote someone to direct a reply to them. Use their name, especially if you are posting directly after them. Do we really need to read their post twice?
How about this idea: Leave it as it is right now, for everybody. For those that don't over quote the long posts, etc. have the old way of quoting as an option that Drew can enable on an individual basis.
Anyone that wants it would first have to know it is available, and would have to ask for it. That would severly limit the number of people asking. The bulk of them, once enabled could simply be forgotten about by Drew. Maintenance free.
Sounds like it's just about making life easier for the administrators of the forum and not for the actual benefit of the forum users. I don't really see what the big deal or problem was, the moderators don't have to constantly nit-pick and interfere with ongoing discussions. It probably has more to do with them covering their backs for whatever reason. Did anyone actually hear anyone complaining about the current quote system? No is the answer to that.
