True they can still edit out the text but at least we know that they posted something in the first place then edited it out.

The fact that we can edit out the text in a double post works out fine, plus it has the added bonus for acknowledged post whores like myself and the Neech Dude of getting a free extra post (I have it on good authority that the Neech Dude gets wood for that very reason).

It's not the double post, per se, but a poster may make a single post, and then later that day, days later, weeks later or more they go back and remove it. We recently had a poster editing his posts and bouncing two and three year old threads to the top.

Also, there may be responses to a post but when it disappears the responses in a thread read like nonsense. If it is just edited, then at least a modicum of decorum is maintained.

Way early in ADT's forum history we ran UBB and allowed people to delete their own posts. It was a problem. A few posters would come in and post a bunch of crap just to be a PITA and delete the post an hour or two later before a moderator had a chance to read it. I can only assume that this would happen again but on an even larger scale.

However, I don't see what benefit a delete has over the ability to edit. Maybe I should also only allow poeple to edit their posts within a 24 hour window?

Occasionally I've wanted to not lose track of a thread, so I wanted to use the option to have an email sent to me whenever a new post was made in that thread.

No problem - if I posted and ticked on the option when I posted.

But how about if I really didn't have anything to say yet? I just wanted to not lose track of the thread.

Once or twice, I went ahead and made a post, ticking on the option as I did so. Then I went right back and edited my post to nothing. That worked.
It just seems sort of kludgey to have to do it that way, and I hope you don't mind that I did it. It just doesn't seem like something I want to do often though.

Or, I forgot to put the tick on in my first post and had to make a second post to get it on there, then editing the second post to nothing.

Would it be possible to create an option to be notified by email whenever anyone replies to a given topic without having to post to it?

Another site has this horrible option where the original poster has the ability to delete the whole thread. A few times it has resulted in someone posting controversial, getting beat up over it, & them coming back & removing all evidence that they were an idiot to begin with & all the hilarious jabs at them that the rest of the gang gave them.

I wouldn't mind a 3-5 day time limit here to edit things but I really don't like the idea of completely taking away all evidence of someone posting on a thread completely.

Like Tony said, some posts just need to be saved for posterity .
