I'm having issues with pictures and videos not being bright enough. It seems that if I adjust all my display settings so that pictures and videos are bright enough, anytime I'm on a web page (or anywhere, really) that has a white background, it's WAY too bright. I use the Real player alternative with Media Player Classic. Problem is that I can only adjust the brightness of videos if the movie is an AVI or Divx file. If it's Mpeg or something else, I'm just SOL.
WMP is no help because the settings for color correction don't work. They haven't worked since I got Vista. The version of WMP that comes with Vista cannot be uninstalled. Therefore, I can't revert to an earlier version. Flash media (and the like) on the web is just as bad. Most video content appears too dark. I don't want to be constantly adjusting my brightness but what can I do? I also don't want to be blinded every time I have a white or bright background.
Maybe I've just got something wrong and am just missing it somehow. It seems like I spent several hours one day tinkering with the settings in my display driver and also on my monititor and I was never able to get a good balance.

Hate to say this RP but it seems like Vista is the problem.
I just tested the same programs you are using (I use them too) and on XP service pack 2 those issues are not present.
I remember reading that inj one of the recent Vista "updates" there was an option to basically roll Vista back so it *was* XP even if you didn't install over XP) (ie. your machine never had XP but vista sucks so much it has the option to install it/emulate it. I am unclear on the details).
Unless you are really marries to the idea of using Vista I suggest you look into this.
Someday they will (hopefully, maybe) fix vista. it will be a while.
EDIT not fixing typos, sorry I am on drugs and don't care, I think I made myself clear.

Yes. I think Vista is probably the problem. I just checked for updates earlier today and there was nothing new. I've installed every update they have available. I think I heard that too but I think it's going to be whenever they get around to releasing SP2. I don't think that's out yet.

It may be an embedded option in a update you already have but don't realize it, windows and microsoft are tricky like that.
If you want I will look at forums for you but I am feeling lazy so it won't be till tomorrow, I am sure you can find what (the roll back) thing mentioned prominently somewvere.
searching....

Rp do you have an XP disc by any chance? preliminary looking seems to make what I said about a roll back a myth (for now).

I have an even easier possible solution. Download a player called "vlc player"
VLC
Give it's color/contrast/gamma/whatever tweaking options a try

I only have the XP system restore discs that came with my old computer. I've looked into it and there doesn't seem to be a way to install that on the new system. I tried it a while back. It seemed to get to a certain point and then just hung. Tried it a couple of times and finally gave up. Seems like if I want XP, I'll have to buy it. Too rich for my blood.
On the VLC player. I've used that one before. I can't remember exactly what it was but I think there was a problem of some kind. Maybe I'll try it again. I forgot about it.

Can't help you there. I only have 1 copy myself. Did you try playing anything and tweaking the VLC controls (I am sorry, like an ass, I didn't even check if vlc works for vista).
