Yes, this is the main issue. Only my 4K videos are encoded in h265, simply because H264 would create file sizes too massive. The good rule of thumb is H265 saves you 50%. In other words, whatever you use for H264, use half the bitrate for H265.
Also, @DJboutit2 are you using a 10bit display? The vast majority of consumers are on 8bit displays. The main benefit for me shooting and mastering in 10bit, is the dynamic range, and recover details when conditions were less than optimal.

What is so hopelessly dependent on studios adopting H.265 that they "need" to do it or are you simply using that word in a sensationalist attempt to give credence to a self-serving argument?
Where did you pull the stat that "most" devices can play H.265 10-bit no problem? By definition, you only need more than 50% of a sample to be able to claim "most".
Let's say 49.9% of a studio's turnover (keep profit in line for the sake of consistency) comes from customers whose devices don't support H.265 playback, which maintains your narrative that "most" devices support it. If the customers don't know how to or can't afford to upgrade to support H.265, that studio risks alienating or even losing a very large chunk of its customer base, income and profitability if it ceases publishing new content that older devices can't support outright or without a software upgrade.
Perhaps if you want the industry to believe it needs to move on to H.265, you need to convince it that it stands to gain more new business/expand its current custom by doing so than it risks losing out by not doing so. Saying a given bitrate for videos on a certain codec "sucks" just sounds like a moan from one person averse to buying more storage rather than something that will benefit studios and consumers alike.

most cant?? i have a 10 year old laptop, bought in 2010, that can easily play 720p x265 with CPU at 30-40%. playing 1080p isnt smooth because the maximum resolution of this old laptop is only 1300 x 700 or something. even playing a 1080p x264 file is hard for this oldie.
my other 2 year old medium-spec laptop can easily play 720p and 1080p. for 4k CPU usage is around 30%.
my 2 year old smartphone can also play x265.
so i think now in 2020 it is less about hardware support and more about editors reluctance to move to something new.
change is happening, we have been seeing more and more hollywood movies in x265, just a matter of time before everything is in x265.
i can agree with 10bit issue because still majority of people are on 8bit display.
You should start your own production. Until HEVC becomes the norm, most studios will continue with AVC. Shooting raw causes delays, the colour is flat so editor would have to colour grade. What I would love is for studios to shoot 60 fps and for gonzo to return in full force, no crappy storylines or reality based but straight up couch scenes.
The industry didn't use HEVC/H.265 downloads because of the royalty problem and by the time that went away, it was too late to deploy and HEVC decoding on the user side required new hardware and software that people weren't going to buy, as you have to pay to get HEVC decoding on GPUs working in Windows 10's media infrastructure, unless you use a free work-around decoder. The licensing group that controls the patents for the codec wanted to charge per-download and usage fees and that would have bankrupted a lot of content owners and distributors and because 4K decoding of H.264 was already around and working, the industry went with that. AV1 is what will be used by industry, moving forward, because it's free of royalties and other nonsense. With software upgrades, older devices can decode AV1 at 1080P and 4K (wherever 4K decoding H.264 is already possible) without any issues, because the tech industry titans have invested millions in optimizing decoders to get the codec deployed ASAP. On the encoding side, they have also done a lot of work to get it ready to use on older, high-end hardware, using the GPU cores for brute force encoding.
There are quite a few 4K-6K cameras launching this year that will be adopted by many in the industry and most of them will offer 4K 60fps video, with HDR options. It's just a matter of getting content makers to upgrade their gear.
