Tonight I'll be working on transitioning ADT to a new single-server configuration. We've been running on the same hardware for the past 5 years and it's time for us to upgrade/downsize (and maybe put a little work into improving the site too. :) The entire site will be offline for 6 to 8 hours starting around midnight EDT. Sorry for any inconvenience this might cause. If you have questions please post them here.
No updates to the forum software tonight. The forum is mostly custom code. It's not an off-the-shelf package. Any updates would involve switching to something else or programming time for me. There will be updates this summer but not tonight.
Are searches 100% yet or does it take some time to catalog the database or whatever? Searching only topic titles wasn't working. Just not returning any finds. As always thanks for the hard work! An all-nighter apparently!
It is fast. I thought maybe it's just because I'm online pretty late or no one else (except Joey, always Joey) is online. One more, if we're supposed to note problems: My Topics isn't working.
Also My Topics not working. I get this: Error Processing your request HTTP Error 500 - Server Error Sorry, there was an error processing the page you requested. The webmaster has been notified and we'll hopefully have it fixed soon. Please use one of the following links to return to Adult DVD Talk Adult DVD Talk Home Adult DVD Talk Forum
I'm pretty amazed how much faster it is too. I had no idea what difference a hardware change would make. We went from two servers with quad Xeon single core processors and 4 GB of RAM each to a single server with 4 quad-core Xeons and 24GB of RAM. I did a little work on cleaning up the database as part of the transition but I had no idea it would make this much of a difference. The new speed is nice, but the primary reason for the switch is this single server hosting solution will save us many thousands of dollars per year compared to the old/slow systems we had. Who woulda thunk that you get more for less?
I apparently didn't configure the fulltext search catalogs properly. They are rebuilding now. Should be done in 15 minutes or so. The new server can rebuild them in 15 minutes, the old server took about 4 hours.
The price search data is rebuilding at the moment. It will take a few hours to reindex over a million items. So if you work at a retailer's store please be aware that we're on it and it will be fixed soon.
Do you think it will stay this fast or will it gradually slow down as technology moves on? It seems like ADT used to be almost this fast and gradually, pages started loaded slower and slower. And sometimes it would just hang there and do nothing for several minutes. Especially on threads with tons of posts.
Love the speed! As a quick couple of things that I noted -- when the window isn't full screen, the text boxes are sometimes mis-sized (i.e. the text runs over the box and what not...) Not a big deal... (Not sure if someone else has mentioned this or not yet...)
I'm using Firefox, but I also checked it on Explorer...both on Windows 7. It's not a big deal...and only happens in a couple of places... If you go to the "The Forum" link from the "Home" page and reduce the size of the window sufficiently, you'll see that the text crosses the boundary of the red box...for the notice of linking to this thread. (not a big deal, but I figured that I'd note it.)
^It actually is the post count info that eventually overlaps into the red box (from being outside in the full-window)... the text that has been placed in the red box scales with the box.
I might be having avatar problems. Any one else? I deleted the mustache guy clip art, replaced it last night with a banana and now mustache guy is back. For me. And I've deleted and replaced and refreshed like always and I still see the old one. My Topics works fine here.
It seems to be working now. I wasn't getting the list of topics. I got all the surrounding what I'll call background, but in the center field where the list of 100 topics are listed along with the hyperlinks, I was getting other information from another site. Very strange. But it's working now. Thanks.
I'm switching back and forth between old server and new server. For some reason search engine bots are hanging the web service. (I handle bots differently than actual users to prevent fake/malicious content scrapers.)
I was doing a huge file copy tonight and messing around with the HTTP compression software. I hope I'm done tinkering with that now and things stay nice and quick.
BTW, I still haven't moved the price search and reviews portions of the site to the new server yet. They are using the database on the new box but the web pages are being served from the old server still. I hope to move that over tonight sometime.
The 'main' part of the site (price search/reviews) was just moved. DNS changes are propagating now. Should be transparent other than people that might be attempting to upload images. That has been disabled on the old server. So if you can't upload an image wait 30 minutes and you should be on the new server and it should work for you. I'm copying all the uploaded files from the old server right now so you might see a few broken uploaded earlier in the day today. They will appear as soon as the data finishes copying over the network. (only 117 more minutes to go.)
I'd like to stay but I've got a plane to catch. 3243 Posts 5/06

I can actually go through the entire forum now without having to open up another tab to browse through another forum while I wait for stuff to load on this one. Speed is at least ten times faster than before.
