I started with some kind of Bearenstein Bears learn-to-read game booted from DOS. Mostly, I liked Heroes of Might & Magic and Sid Meier’s Colonization and Civilization — emphasis on Sid Meier because I feel Civilization really went downhill once he was no longer involved with it. I hear there’s a new Colonization in the works with Meier back at the helm, but probably shouldn’t get too interested in it because those sorts of games tend to eat up large amounts of my time and there’s this pesky work thing that takes priority. What was the first videogame that really got you addicted and what was it about that game that hooked you? Civilization. It made chess make sense. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy conquering small and then large nations? Who do you think the sexiest videogame vixen is and why? Really, the games I like playing didn’t have vixens in them, and I feel like doing a five-minute Google image search to pick a hot vixen for the purpose of this interview would be cheating. What do you think the game industry could do to attract more girl gamers? I think the real issue is generalization of girls by the gaming industry. You can see a bunch of stuff on PopPorn. Sometimes I review things. Sometimes I try to review things and write about how it went horribly wrong. Sometimes I write things and some gay man will post how he’d totally turn straight for me! Sometimes I write about some of the super hot guys in gay porn. I’ll look for pictures of them because I’m always super curious. I was actually home schooled. I graduated right before I turned 16. When you’re home schooled you don’t take summers off. You just keep learning things. My mom was into different ways of learning. Impulse Gamer: The behind the scene featurettes of your movies shows a different side to the adult industry when you're goofing around that viewers can really relate to and highlights that the industry is not a dark and seedy world. Stoya: You know, I feel like media in general, like the big television networks and things like that, they like things that are sensational. Like if you turn on the news, you will see stories about people who got shot, wars, anything that's dark and gloomy and sad or like violent because that's how they get attention. So when they talk about the adult industry, you only see like the 3% that is sad or exploitative, they don't want to talk about "oh, nice girl with a high sex drive and strong exhibitionist streak, hooks up with this great company and they're all happy and wonderful". Because in the format they present the news in, there's no story there. The only part that they show you is a very very small part. Most of the girls are really happy with what they do, I'm really happy with what I do and of course the Men are EXTREMELY HAPPY with what they do. What is the next movie that you will be appearing in? You know what, that gets a little tricky because I know that when we make a movie in America, we'll shoot all kinds of stuff from softcore to as hardcore as I feel like going that day and then some of it is actually too extreme for the American Market, I don't know what they do with that. I don't know if they can sell it in Germany and like put it in or if they just leave it on the cutting room floor, I don't know what they do. Then we have to take what's ok for America and send it down here and Calvista actually has to edit a lot out to make it acceptable to the Australian market. Even for the XXX rating, they have to cut allot of it and sometimes it takes a few of tries, they'll cut, then they send it and it gets denied. I have no idea of what point it becomes available, I probably should have asked about that this before we did this. What is your current favourite Digital Playground Movie? Stoya: I really like Nurses, I know you're always suppose to push the newest anyway but I really genuinely loved making nurses, it was awesome and I liked the plot. Impulse Gamer: What are your favourite adult film genres? Stoya: We have of course pirates which is heavily scripted and then we have the Cheerleaders and Nurses. We just shot a movie called Teachers but that won't even out be in America for 6 to 8 months. So, I probably shouldn't have even mentioned that. Sorry to get your hopes up! Impulse Gamer: The editing process is quite long? Yeah, it's really long. We have those movies and they have a heavy plot. Sometimes they go through the whole film and then we do vignettes where each scene has maybe five, six pages of dialoged before it. I don't really like that. I like the big ones that have like a huge script or I like the gonzo where it's our director with the hand held video camera and he's like do you know what, lets do something really silly and totally stereotypically. Like the Pizza Man setup, "Oh no, I can't find my wallet, how am I ever going to pay you?" or like "Oh Mr. Maintenance Man, I think I have a couple of screws loose in my vagina. Do you have a tool that could fix that? So cliché! Yeah, it's kind of fun to poke fun at ourselves, I like the extreme ends. Vignettes I have no use for, expect for Atomic Tease because it was beautiful, it was very beautifully styled. What's your future? How long will you stay in the industry for? I don't know, I don't want to jinx it, I don't want to decide that I'm only going to be in for a couple of years and maybe miss opportunities because I'm being short sighted. At the same time, I don't want to count on being in the industry for a very long period of time because you never know when the certain look that I have, the popularity of it may expire. I might, gosh! I might like trip into a barbeque and have a barbeque face and then not be able to work anymore because nobody wants to look at a barbeque face. I'm not even sure what that would look like? You really never know. You'll see which way life takes you and you'll go from there? Pretty much. What are your thoughts on this? You know what, the internet when it was put together, it really started to become not like mainstream but frequently used in the mid 80's and then the world wide web which is known as the internet today, having web pages and computers talking to each other. The internet was kind of weird as everybody was speaking a different language and now the world wide web had them speak the same sort of programming language. The beautiful thing about it though is that information could be uploaded and shared freely and there was no censorship, so everything from you know, different types of sex acts were available on the internet through to maybe your hobby to write romance novels and you cant find a publisher. Well, you could put it up on a website online and at least share your work with people. And then from things like that, people have gotten book deals. That was the beauty of it [the internet] was that there was no censorship anywhere, be it the censorship of an editor saying no that's not good enough to put money into publishing or the censorship of a government saying no we don't want you to see that. For instance, when 911 happened, The American government wasn't really being very forthright with their citizens about what was going but you could easily go the BBC website or if you were lucky enough to have access to someone that could translate, you could even hear what Afghanistan and Iraq had to say in their newspapers and then begin to kind of piece together what's really going on. A different perspective? Yes, for any country to begin censoring the internet, it just sucks. It sort of like spoils the whole fun of it and America's has talked about it too. I know that China does and something about it is just completely against the spirit of what the internet was meant to be which is a free exchange of information. It's a good medium to promote the adult world as well? Very True. Very very true! Probably without the internet as it is today, I would not be here, my movies would not be sold in Australia. Because without email and the ability to make contact, or without things like MySpace and Twitter for me to be able to get in touch with what fan base I do have in Australia, there's no demands for me or my movies here. On to something totally different, what's your all time favourite game or are you playing anything at the moment? I don't have time to play games anymore because I'll literally loose days of my life. My phone will be going off, people will be ringing my door bell and I won't care. I really like Sid Meier's Civilization, that was my favourite. This is the same 22-year-old who has taken porn by storm enough that, of her roles, four are of the 10 best-selling DVD titles from Digital Playground. She also has a starring role in three of the studio’s four biggest features to date. She capped her first year in porn by being named the top newcomer at the Adult Movie Awards and also won adult film blog Fleshbot’s Extreme Pornstar Showdow. And yes, Stoya interrupts, looking up as if reciting lines, she reads science fiction, but please don’t ask her about it. “I am so freakin’ tired of talking about books,” she says.” I don’t want to discuss Terry Pratchett or Anne McCaffery or any of those things ever again because then I get 400 e-mails in one day saying, ‘Oh my God, you like that author, have you read Asimov?’ Yes, I’ve read Asimov. Of course I’ve read Asimov. Do you really think you’re the first person to ask me that?” She has, however, written about what she reads, like William Gibson’s 2007 tech-centric, science fiction novel Spook Country. That’s the question, how one of the fastest rising stars in porn can be as much of a geek as perhaps her most devoted fans. “I’m not,” she says, interjecting before the sentence is all the way out of my mouth. “I’m not even that nerdy. I was just raised that nerdy. My dad worked in IT, I had everything early.” Stoya says she had everything from a large, early-model PDA to a DOS edition of the Berenstain Bears Learning Essentials. That side of her has likely fueled her precipitous rise in porn. Her saying a video game nerd just might be her type of guy has to push merchandise. She just won’t be doing it from Philadelphia anymore. HOME SWEET PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia seems like a fitting home for Stoya, who seems jarringly real. She is an aggressive and honest upstart, slinging out phrases like “anally penetrated” without apology while mild-mannered young professionals sip tea behind her. But it’s no show, and there is no glitz; she can be irrationally cold and angry. She loves Nat Mechanics. Near Independence Mall, she shot portions of a silent-film vignette with another adult film star of a different stripe. Earlier this month, as Geekadelphia reported, Tony Trov and Johnny Zito, the creators of online comic series Black Cherry Bombshells who we have interviewed, cast Stoya in their entrant to the 48 hour Film Festival. North Carolina-born and Delaware-bred, she became a teenage transplant here for the ease of mass transit and is now Philadelphia’s adult film star. But one year into her reign, Stoya plans to move to Los Angeles this fall. When she was first signed by California-based Digital Playground, there weren’t enough commitments to keep her busy there. Now, she says she often spends more time on the road than at home and much of it is in Los Angeles — where law and culture have made a porn epicenter. (It can be noted that, in addition to Stoya and Popporn, Philly is also home to its parent TLA Raw and major adult accessories distributor SexToys.com). But there’s no convincing Stoya to stick around. “If you squint your eyes, it all looks exactly the same,” she says. “The only difference is the people who are there.” STOYA ON THE INTERNETS Of course, the Web helps to bridge geography. To date, Stoya has more than 10,500 followers on Twitter and nearly 15,000 MySpace friends. She takes pride in handling those accounts on her own, though she says she has thought of handing over the workload to a publicist. On Twitter, she gives lurid allusions to future videos, gets her fans in a tizzy, promotes what’s currently for sale and gives updates on her travel and her scene work. “I was raised in the South and I have this obnoxious thing called manners,” Stoya says, on why she tries to address the hundreds of fan e-mails and messages she can get daily. Still she maintains that her use of social media is more an outlet of her obsession with what is new and with a desire to stay connected with friends — who are scattered across the world — than it is a marketing blitz. That’s just a byproduct, she says. Using social media does, she relents, help curate a community of supporters that can help her create a long-term career — just a handful of years if she’s lucky (and she says she doesn’t know what would come after). Many women who enter porn burn out in months, not years, she adds. “[A lot of] my ‘colleagues,’” Stoya says, sneering at a question on how she relates to other performers, “are too busy trying to figure out what to do with their boyfriend who is in a band or where to get their next drug fix from.” The women who are today creating careers in some segment of the adult industry, Stoya goes on, are those using social media. “Girls like Sasha Grey and Bella Dona and Kimberly Kane, who, you know, are around for more than a year.” So Philadelphia will always be able to find Stoya online, which soon may be the only place you’ll ever find her in the region. Late in our conversation, as she grew ready for the interview to end, Stoya seemed to broach a reason for leaving that might seem a bit more emotional than simple work-related pragmatism. “I’m not really the kind of person you can have around small children, so the friends who are getting married and having kids are pretty much cut off anyway,” she says, hiding well any disappointment you might expect her to have. “I don’t need to be in Philadelphia anymore.” [Link] |

You grew up in North Carolina then relocated to Philadelphia. Can you tell me a bit more about your personal history? I was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, spent twelve years living all over the eastern half of the state and then moved to Delaware. I was home schooled, got my diploma three months before my sixteenth birthday, and then started moving to Philadelphia. It was the closest place with a good public transit system, and a drivers license wasn't going to be possible until my 18th birthday. I have this sort of wanderlust thing, and ended up just living out of this giant suitcase for about two years when I was 19 to 21. Usually I had a room somewhere, but was hardly ever in the same city for long. About six months ago I moved back to southern California and have pretty much stayed put so far. My lease is up in October and I want to run away to Europe. Speaking of Europe, you're Serbian, Scottish, and, well, Puerto Rican. Where's your name come from? The Serbian part. My grandmother handled my art education -- she used Stoya (a very shortened version of her last name) in art school for crits because the instructors didn't want to deal with all six syllables of Slavic heritage. When I started selling pieces here and there, I used that as well, and my best friend/roommate/partner in crime and I share the same name and quite a few identifying characteristics. People started calling me Stoya to avoid confusion, it stuck, and when I needed a stage name for the nude alt-community websites it was the obvious choice. You used to do some dancing in Philadelphia. How'd you get your start in that? I was living with two DJs and dating another one when I was still a minor, and working for the venue in some capacity was the best way to get my severely underage self in to the clubs. As long as you don't drink it's legal. It was so much fun I kept dancing after the novelty of clubs wore off. I grew up around around Philadelphia. There's an extremely tight-knit, almost small-town feel to that city. Do you miss it? Or the pretzels? There's a very tight-knit feel to the city. Actually, last night one of my friends who's lived there was over and we were trying to explain to another person how philly is like a small town covered in concrete. How'd you make the transition from dancing and nude photos on the alt sites to sex on film? What was your early film work like? I had done a bunch of music videos (mostly for bands no one will ever hear of, but work is work) and niche fetish videos when one of the alt sites I was on contacted me asking if I'd be willing to do a scene for the porn DVD they were putting out. Civilization was my favorite computer game when I was 6. My dad taught me how to navigate DOS when my mom was teaching me how to read. Sid Meier was the coolest in 1992. I read a lot, and always have, so I've read pretty much every genre of book out there. I think cyber punk is like Jules Verne was in the turn of the century, and it's awesome to see how the 1980s version of the future is accurate in certain ways and way off in others. I just finished The Difference Engine by Gibson and some other guy and Making Money by Terry Pratchett. Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is great. He started writing it because he always wondered about the inner workings of the cities in fantasy novels. Like, who feeds the heroes? What do the heroes and magicians do when they aren't out killing dragons and toppling gods? It's so original and it's all annotated with british humour. Now I'm reading Spangle by Gary Jennings. It's historical fiction about the circus directly after the U.S. Civil War. Gary Jennings is super rad because he spent so much time doing research.
