And two days later the system freezes and when it restarts Windows gives me a nice message, Can't verify your licensing information you must Reactivate to continue.
Well I might as well build a new machine and activate windows on that instead.
So looking for various configs to build a nice system that can handle video editing in a timely fashion.
Motherboard must be Abit Or Asus. I'm keeping my vidcard ATI AIW 8500 DV. Everything else up in the air.

Give us some specs on your computer so that we can evaluate if upgrading is worthwhile. It would seem that if the new software is important enough to you, you may not have too many options.
Does SCSI still exist or have any advantage any more? If not there's new S-ATA drives out there and there are plenty of motherboards that offer integrated RAID.
If you want to keep using your AGP video card avoid PCI-Express, there are no boards that handle both. Avoid integrated components if you can.
I have no clue about AMD processors, I've avoided them like the plague since the early 90s.
I've always found AnandTech useful at pointing the way to motherboards, processors and video cards... pricing too. think of it as the ADT of computer hardware.
Every time I hear about this message it puts another brick in my determination to switch to Linux. Sooner or later I will have to get off my ass and do it.
Depends on what you need to do. Also really depends on your hardware. I've always wanted to try out linux. Corel Linux was really slick back then. But no matter what distribution I tried none would recognize or configure my network card. They are all Intel NICs too.
But for things like DVD-Authoring and Image Editing, and Programming I'll stick with Windows.
After I build the new system, I'll probably try to turn this old Athlon into a Linux database server and see how it works out.
Since a lot of movie studios (Lord of the Rings!) are switching to Linux for their rendering and editing it is just a matter of time. Untill then I just keep our video-editing machines disconnected from the big, bad Internet.
A few months ago I did find a couple of GUI tools that worked on top of the commandline proggie 'dvdauthor'. IIRC they were in something akin to a version 0.0.0.0.1 pre-alpha testing phase. Realllly unstable.
If you're of the patient sort, dvdauthors' setup file is a tad easier to grasp than sendmail's (which isn't saying much, I know).
The general consensus at the time seemed to be that the only really useful DVD authoring SW was for the Mac. Even the Windows lads said so.
If you want to give Linux a little spin and check out of the box support for your hardware, you could try the Knoppix or Slax live-CDs. They've done great at autodetecting hardware on the various machines I've tried them. For permanent installs perhaps SuSE or Mandrake would be better. Or Slackware if you're a true oldfashioned Unix CLI geek.

What image editing SW do you use? I did a little Photoshopping a few years ago. Great program, even if it was a memory hog. Last year at work I had to do some light editing and I only had a license for Paint Shop Pro. After half an hour of cursing that pile of poo, I caved in and installed the GIMP. Not Photoshop, but at least it didn't frustrate the hell out of me like PSP.
Any heavy load requirements? MySql is fast but a lot of SQL features are missing to achieve that speed. I found PostgreSQL nice to work with, but it's not as fast as MySql.
I'm a little confused. I dual boot Mandrake Linux and XP pro and mandrake can do everything windows can as far as I can see, + alot more. I do video editing, gaming and run several web servers. It does it all, I think Advanced server 2000 is better than both but only due to user friendliness. Using a 10k scsi for your os hd is a good idea!!!

Except for the very high-end, computer systems have stagnated over the last year. Buying a system based on top-of-the-line, state-of-the-art components from about a year ago is dirt cheap today and will easily last you at least two or three (or four) years.
I've got a couple of boxes based on Gigabyte GA8KNXP/2 motherboards with 3.2GHz P4C processors and 2GB DDR-SDRAM which will run anything I'll need for years. Each now has a pair of 32GB, 10K-RPM SATA drives (1 for OS & Apps, the other for cache and automated, periodic backup of OS & Apps) and a four-drive, 600GB (total storage, ea drive is 200GB), 7200-RPM RAID-5 array for data storage. Each also has a 200GB removable hard drive, a CD/DVD reader, a CD/DVD burner, a built-in zip drive, and a built-in multi-format memory card reader.
Asus and Abit have similar motherboards but none with the degree of drive flexibility that the Gigabyte board has (4 SATA devices, 8 PATA devices, multiple RAID options, all integrated into the board design) without adding controllers.
I build about 3 custom, high-end machines a month for clients and friends.
i wouldn't touch an abit board for at least 6 months. in mid-december the taiwan stock exchange downgraded the fuck out of them and they're going to get in trouble for some ridiculously illegal and unscrupulous accounting hijinx. shame, since they've made good stuff-although nothing impressive in over a year. gigabyte always makes interesting boards with amazing packages of onboard stuff-but they've got a rep as maybe a little less-stable than the other top boards on a given chipset. you read people complaining about asus boards all the time, but there are more of them out there than anything else and at the end of the day they usually make the best or damn near the best product for any chipset. the company that's actually been putting out the best boards for almost a year is dfi, suprisingly. they stole abit's top guy who made the nf-7 and a lot of their reputation and have gone from cheap oem stuff to arguably the best manufacturer despite their use of neon colors. what's impressive about dfi is they're usually behind everyone else's releases by a month or two, and the final product doesn't have the bugs and quirks you get from rushing stuff. they have yet to put out a 939 board, which seems crazy until you realize every other manufacturer can't put out a good one-they did the same thing on 754 and when they got things right they put out by far the best board for the chipset. so for a non-workstation or server, i'd choose them along with asus, abit may not be around in a year and gigabyte's never put out a rock-solid, best-of-generation board and don't seem to be improving.
