Many sites offer trial memberships, which are usually 3 days long. In the fine print the sites always say that if a trial membership is not cancelled on time then it will be converted to a monthly membership and billed accordingly. That seems fine, but the rates are always higher.

For example, a site that I was just looking at charges $4.95 for a 3 day trial membership. The site says though that if the trial membership is not cancelled on time then it will change to a monthly membership and be billed at $39.95 per month, which is ridiculous because the site normally charges $19.95 per month.

It seems to me that many sites offer these trial memberships hoping that members will not cancel in time and then they charge higher rates to them.

As with all things it depends on the site.

I've gotten many trial memberships... and I've cancelled them, and had no problems. I have been burned once or twice, but that was a long time ago, and I know better what to look for now.

Anyone going to a paysite who has any experience at all will know to ALWAYS ALWAYS read the fine print, along with the terms and conditions. Keep the information you need in case there's any trouble, and then follow the directions to the letter if you plan on cancelling before the trial ends.

I find that sites that use CC-Bill as their billing company are very easy to deal with, largely because CC-Bill is very easy to deal with. Cancel the membership on CC-Bill's site. It's done.

That said, I'm still VERY VERY picky about what site's I sign up with. If I get a bad vibe, I'm outta there.

I think that somewhere around here there's a thread that talks about people's experience with different billing companies and different paysites... I think. Maybe somewhere in the shopping forum...

I almost always join on a trial bases and never had a problem because I always cancel the next day so I'm sure I won't be billed again.
