Don't know if this right group, or whether the question has been asked.

Is there a public record of how many units of any adult movie have been sold?

Asked for this for some time without any reply. Think it's one of the best kept secrets of the adult industry.

I think that when something gets released, the decent run goes like 3,000 units

Funny, I was thinking in the 10000 to 15000 range for an "decent" run, whatever that is. I don't know how much a movie costs to make, although I'm sure it has been discussed here somewhere before (the search function is inoperational as of this writing, or I would have done that myself.)

From my experience, (and I think there was
a really nice post on r.a.m.e. last year about this),
3,000 is a lot closer to the truth than 10,000.

You make 3,000 if it gets ordered by distributors and theres demand then you make another batch of 3,000, if it gets order then you make another 3,000

For Gonzo or wall to wall 3,000 units initally out the door is good. Re-orders are also important and certainly add to the bottom line.

This is why features don't make really their money from direct video sale, but rather from the cable deals. This is also why its important for feature companies to shoot both soft and hardcore versions of their movies and have some Euro deal in place.

If a company spends 10k on a gonzo production and sell 3,000 units at 8 to 10 dollars a pop they are still turning a profit. But this is also why it is difficult to be a producer/director who owns their product. It takes awhile for you to start actually making serious money.

Making money from porno isn't as easy as many people think.

nietzsche - Adult Video companies won't tell you exactly how many they make of any title and since most aren't publically owned they can't be compelled to release that information. Usually any press statement about pre-sales and such are more for PR then accuracy.

I think I read somewhere in Europe studios could get away with selling just 1000 copies and still make a (very small) profit. Maybe their budget per movie is even lower than in US, and they manage to sell their tapes/DVDs at a slightly higher price on those markets?

If I was investing in porn companies it wouldn't be in a company that does features - it's only a matter of time until those markets, cable, satellite, hotels, take the gonzo plunge and gonzo companies grab a big piece of those markets.

Does anybody really think the salesman on the road given the choice between buying '1 in the Pink 2 in the Stink' and some Vivid/Wicked style crap called 'Restless Heart' on hotel PPV is going to choose the lame feature?

I would never devulge what friends of mine have gotten for cable deals, but it is extremely good. Matter of fact better then good. Hotel chains alone make insane profits off of movies.

In this political climate it will be a long time before we see Gonzo or Wall to Wall in a hotel chain. As it is, hotels are under attack to have even features removed.

I believe that Metro is, or was, a publicly listed company.

Publicly listed companies don't have to state unit sales figures. However, they can't lie about them if they do state them. This caused Disney some heartburn at one point.

Of some interest is the ratio of rental sales vs. sell-through. Total sales are so low that I assume nearly all are rental sales.

In a recent thread in the Press Release forum. A press release from Fusxion (Metro) announced that the first two Fusxion releases had sold over 5000 units, which were records for any Gonzo title ever sold by Metro.

When a studio sells 3,500 units on the first week of release for an averege cost of $9-$10, its considered good. If you get re-orders on top of it, you know you got a hit. I know of titles that doubled their first week of sales just by the re-orders. Most big studios will sell only, combined, 2000 units on the first week.

$9-10... hmmmmmm..........

what, you expected an answer?

I will say that Kevin's answers have been pretty accurate for the average gonzo company. And that feature companies do make their profits from cable sales. Playboy isn't exactly clamoring for Evil Angel product.
